I Will Be the Greatest Knight
Chapter 107: Reunited

Chapter 107: Reunited

Sir Gunnar resumed his position as their leader as he walked ahead of the apprentices. However, the entire group was walking much more closely together. It was out of precaution, but Irene knew it was also because of how terrifying that stretch over the rockslide was for a moment.

As always, they had to push these thoughts to the back of their minds and press on. Being brave, no matter how much they scraped elbows with death on any given day, was a must. Even if it was a tough reality, it was still reality.

"There really isn’t much to see up here, is there?" Irene uttered as they pressed on.

"We’re having unexpected clouds," Gunnar explained. "All of the knights made the mistake of believing that it would remain as clear as last night. Even the moon isn’t helping us much anymore."

"How far until we’re up?" Felix asked. "I’ve been this high before but I hardly remember it."

"I’m looking..." Gunnar trailed off.

Since the apprentices were sticking close to the knight, they went silent. It was clear he needed to focus.

The further they moved, the more the clouds did as well. Even though there were clouds stuck to the moisture within the lee of the mountain, they melted away from the outer edge. With the moonlight that finally peeked through, patches of forest were revealed to them. Even grass on the ground was revealed and they were so relieved to see they wouldn’t have to sleep on hard rock.

"Ah," Gunnar uttered. "I knew it was around here someplace. If the clouds move away fully, perhaps we’ll be able to find the others soon enough as well."

"It’s bigger up here than I thought it would be," Irene admitted. "The peak doesn’t look so monstrous from down below. I wonder what this area looks like from the northern valley."

"The journey to the other side of the mountains is weeks long," Gunnar explained. "The only way through is over, but it’s over one of the lower peaks. Your family had to make that trip at some point. Quite an amazing feat considering your father and his siblings were children."

Irene perked up ever so slightly. She was always proud of her father and eager to hear of his amazing feats, but this was a story she had heard many times.

"My grandmother speaks of this quite often," she admitted. "Each time the snow falls, she’ll remind us of how difficult my dad was in the snow."

"How he must love staying home each winter." Gunnar chuckled.

The clouds continued shifting due to the wind that, luckily, didn’t quite reach the protected area they were going to camp in for the night. It made it darker sometimes but lighter in the others. When they were afforded another few moments of moonlight and clarity, Gunnar gestured for them to go faster.

"Perhaps we should get a fire burning close to that rock wall," he suggested. "It will be difficult when there is no moonlight to guide us."

"Will the others know to come find us?" Irene asked.

"If they see a fire, they’ll come," Sir Gunnar assured her.

"Could something have possibly happened to them?" she wondered. "You said before that the path they took is shorter."

"Shorter but steeper," Gunnar explained. "If something happened to them, we would have heard it because it’s not that far off from where we were in the first place." However, the knight cut himself off. "Off you go," he told her.

She nodded, realizing she was stalling especially when Felix gently shoved her shoulder to keep walking. The two apprentices went to the farthest deep point at the edge of one of the forests and found a dead end against a rock wall. They started laying out sticks they found on the way there in a pattern to try and get some of them lit up with flint and resin.

"I’m starving," Felix uttered. "If we get this built quickly enough I’m going to see if there’s something worthwhile to hunt up here. At this point, I’m not above eating a dire wolf."

"Neither am I," Irene admitted.

Felix continued slicing his axe against flint but his eyebrows rose at Irene.

"A noble willing to eat something so unclean," he uttered. "You’re not quite like other nobles."

"I’m hardly a noble," she resisted. "My father made sure of that. Besides, even Sünsto will eat dire wolves if they’re forced to in the arctic winters."

Felix merely chuckled and shook his head. He wanted to bring up the noble girls that Iro was insistent on resisting but he managed to hold back, knowing it was going to make the apprentice upset. He would keep the peace for a while.

Even though they were against rock, the forest behind them as they tried to block any breeze from taking down their small fire was unsafe and uncertain. They didn’t have time to look through it themselves, but they were certain that’s what Sir Gunnar was doing since he asked that they be the ones to start the fire.

However, there was a rustling that sounded like something big and the two apprentices instantaneously stood and unsheathed their swords, offering impressive response times that Gunnar would have been proud of if he was there.

However, what came through the forest was the other half of their group.

Irene couldn’t help her relief and she bounded forward to Leif where she placed her hands on his shoulders and squeezed them with a grin on her face.

"I was a bit worried you all had fallen off of the mountain," she admitted.

"You’re such a girl, Iro," Felix observed with his head shaking. "Next you’ll dive into Leif’s arms and give him a hug once you guys are apart for a while."

Irene turned to Felix and stuck out her tongue.

"My father hugs people all the time. I would like to hear you say that to him."

However, the most welcome interruption came in the form of Sir Gunnar with two squirrels being held out in front of him.

"I didn’t think I would be able to outsmart them, but here we are."

Sven even held up a bird that he had managed to shoot with an arrow.

Everyone felt immense relief to be able to fill up their stomachs after a long day of travel.
