I Will Be the Greatest Knight
Chapter 101: A Knight’s Promise

Chapter 101: A Knight’s Promise

Irene woke up midday after an exhausting night. However, her first thought wasn’t pleased at how well-rested she was. She was worried that they forgot to wake her to see her father try on his new hand.

In a scramble, the girl built up the fire in her stove, washed herself with water that was always sitting on top of the stove, and got dressed so she could rush outside and into the Duke’s Tower where her first priority was finding her father. She had left the box with the prosthetic hand with Sir Gunnar.

Since Sir Arthur was still staying in the Duke’s Tower for monitoring and on the second floor, that was where she ran first.

His room was empty.

She began to start running through the Duke’s Tower again but she found Sir Gunnar first.

"Where is my father, sir?" she asked.

"Dining hall," he responded. "You ought to eat your first meal as well."

"He hasn’t seen the hand yet, has he?"

Sir Gunnar smirked slightly.

"I told you I would let you know," he responded. "I always keep my word."

"Of course! Forgive me for seeming as if I was doubting..."

Since she hadn’t stopped moving once, Sir Gunnar was quick to relent.

"Go and eat with your father. I will bring the box to the sitting room and see if Stanley would like to join us."

She didn’t need any further permission than that and she rushed to the lower level where she found her father eating amongst other knights. Fortunately, he was sitting at the end of the table so, after she grabbed her own meal, she sat across from him and next to Sir Sven.

"Good morning, father," she said. "Good morning, Sir Sven."

"Good morning, Iro," Sven greeted easily before resuming eating out of his nearly empty bowl. He debated going for seconds.

"Good morning. You’re up earlier than I would expect someone who had to participate in the night watch," Arthur observed as his daughter began to eat her meal.

"I’m too excited to keep sleeping," she admitted. "After breakfast, Sir Gunnar and Stanley have something for you in the sitting room. I was hoping to be there when you saw it for the first time. Actually, there’s someone else who came here wanting to visit you."

She began to eat her food but only got halfway through before there was an interruption.

Arthur would have asked who Irene was talking about, but soon the very visitor bounded through the threshold of the dining hall and his loud booming voice greeted the knight.

"Sir Arthur!" Samson exclaimed. He then moved forward quickly and clasped the man on his shoulder. "You can’t imagine how worried I was to hear that you were injured in battle. I put all my other work to the side to do as the mage requested."

Since Arthur was finished eating, he stood up. It occurred to him that he had no hand to offer and, even though his right arm was raised for a greeting, there was nothing for the other man to hold onto.

"Samson," he greeted warmly. "You made the trip so late in the season on behalf of me?"

The stump where Sir Arthur’s hand once existed didn’t bother Samson in the slightest. He embraced Arthur’s arm with his hand at his elbow and squeezed it.

"I’ve never created something like this before," Samson admitted. "However, the mage seemed to have specifics of what he needed and we made it work one way or another."

In the meantime, Irene ate her food as quickly as possible so she wouldn’t miss out on the action.

"Slow down, kid," Sir Sven warned her. "You’re going to get a stomach ache if you eat like that."

However, by the time he offered his advice, she was nearly done with the porridge because it was easy to swallow quickly.

"Forgive me, sir," she responded with a guilty laugh. "Would you like me to take your bowl?"

He relented with a sigh and pushed the wooden bowl towards the apprentice who happily and dutifully took it to where the maids were collecting things to clean.

By the time Sir Arthur and Samson were finished with their conversation, Irene had joined them.

"Are you ready?" she asked her father.

Since she seemed more excited than anyone else, the red-headed knight offered a small smile and nod.

"Lead the way," he responded.

Irene figured Samson and her father would trail behind her, but she was surprised to see not only Sir Sven coming along but Leif running up because he didn’t want to miss out on whatever was going on either. The thought put a small smile on her face. Evidence of her father’s influence would never cease to amaze her.

Sure enough, the people they were seeking were in the sitting room as promised. However, the group size kept getting unexpectedly larger. Felix was there with Stanley and Sir Gunnar.

Stanley held the box and when they were all finally sitting down, he presented the box to the knight.

"It took a couple of weeks, but I believe we’ve discovered a solution to this problem," the mage explained. "With the help of this blacksmith, he got it finished in just over a week."

"It’s Samson," the aforementioned blacksmith insisted. "You have serious trouble remembering my name."

Stanley only faintly bristled at this by casting the blacksmith a glare before he stepped closer to Arthur.

"Please, open it."

Irene stood at the side of her father’s chair, practically holding her breath as she waited for his response to the hand. She hoped that he would be as elated as she was. Everyone’s intentions weren’t to doubt his abilities but to hope that the greatest knight so far would be able to continue working as he had done before.

There was hardly a knighthood without him in it, in Irene’s opinion.

With the box on his lap, Arthur balanced it with the nub on his right arm then did finer movements of unclasping the metal and fully opening it with his left.

His red eyebrows rose when the box was open and he simply stared at it for a few moments.
