I Was Kidnapped By The Strongest Guild -
Chapter 257: Fall Dog
The TV screen went black.
Levinas pressed the remote control button several times, but the screen wouldn't turn on.
It meant it was completely broken.
"Levinas's TV..."
Thud-
Levinas dropped the remote and stumbled into the bedroom.
She buried her face in the pillow on the bed and lay there motionless.
The sense of loss over losing the TV seemed significant.
"Levinas..."
I understood why Levinas was acting this way.Our TV was a pretty expensive model.
It's natural to feel despair when an expensive item breaks suddenly, especially if you can't afford to buy another one.
She might even be thinking she'd never be able to watch TV again.
'What should I do?'
I wanted to buy her a TV.
But the original TV was so expensive that I couldn't even dream of purchasing it.
Regrettably, we'd have to compromise with a much lower-grade TV.
"Levinas, let's go look at TVs tomorrow. I'll buy you one."
"...It's okay. There's lots to do besides watching TV."
Levinas said with her face still buried in the pillow.
She seemed intimidated by the price of the original TV.
"N-No, we can get a cheaper TV..."
Just as I was about to comfort Levinas, the dog girl peeked her face out from the bedroom doorway.
"Heh..."
Her tongue slightly sticking out, her eyes glancing around.
She looked somewhat blank yet apologetic.
The girl who had been staring at us approached carefully.
She massaged Levinas's back while making whimpering sounds like a puppy.
Still, Levinas didn't move.
She didn't seem angry, just completely drained of energy.
"Levinas is going to be alone for a while..."
Levinas answered in a gruff voice.
It seemed like we needed to give her some time.
"Levinas, we'll wait outside. Come out when you feel better, okay?"
"Mm..."
"We'll play together again later."
I left the bedroom with Saebyeok and the girl.
The children seemed quite shocked too, wearing dazed expressions.
This was something that time would solve.
I patted the head of the girl who was still showing signs of feeling sorry.
"It'll be okay. Levinas is a good kid."
"Whine..."
The girl wagged her tail.
Her gaze was fixed on the broken TV.
She seemed to be reflecting on her actions.
I decided to give this child some time too.
---
---
I came out to the living room after taking a quick shower.
In that short time, Levinas's mood seemed to have improved as she was standing in front of the sofa.
"Levinas."
Feeling my tail wag, I approached Levinas.
But for some reason, Levinas's expression didn't look good.
"King, have you seen the doggy?"
"The beast-kin friend?"
Come to think of it, I hadn't even asked for the child's name.
Looking around, I couldn't see the child anywhere in the house.
"Levinas wanted to apologize, but can't find her anywhere..."
"Uh... hold on..."
I raised my nose high and sniffed for the child's scent.
The child's scent trail led towards the front door.
"Did you find her scent?"
"Yeah. I think she went outside...?"
Did she slip out while Saebyeok was napping and I was in the shower?
She had just come out of the portal.
That meant she understood this world even less than I did.
'This is bad.'
A child who knows nothing has left the house alone.
I was beyond worried.
"What do we do...? Did she leave because Levinas was being mean?"
"No, I don't think that's it."
"Then why did she leave...?"
"I don't know..."
Honestly, I didn't know why the child had left the house either.
It didn't seem like she left out of resentment or because she was upset.
I had various thoughts, but for now, I decided to look for the child first.
"I'll bring her back. We can apologize then."
"...Can Levinas come too?"
"Sure. Let's all go together."
I glanced at Saebyeok.
She was looking down at the floor, probably feeling guilty about losing the child while she was sleeping.
"We have her scent, so we'll find her quickly. Don't worry too much."
"Okay..."
We all went down to the park together.
Since we didn't know the child's name, we called out the closest thing we could think of.
"Doggy, Levinas is sorry."
"Puppy..."
Levinas and Saebyeok called out for the child while I tracked her scent.
Despairingly, the child's scent trail led outside the park.
'This is really bad.'
The search area had become too wide.
Knowing how scary the outside world could be, I couldn't help but worry.
"King, did the doggy go outside?"
"Yeah... It looks that way."
Thud-
At my answer, Levinas sat down on the spot.
She knelt down, wailing and pounding the ground.
"It's all Levinas's fault...! Because Levinas said she wanted to be alone...!"
"Levinas, we can apologize when we find her again, okay?"
"...Right. Levinas will find her and say sorry."
Sniff.
Levinas rubbed her nose.
It was the expression she had when she'd made up her mind about something.
Levinas and the dog girl.
For the sake of both children, I was determined to find her.
---
---
The sun set and darkness fell.
At a time when we should have been at home, we were still wandering around the neighborhood.
"King, can't you find her by scent?"
"Yeah... Looks like she ran around a lot..."
The child's scent was scattered all over the place.
It meant she had run around the city quickly and erratically.
Did she get lost and wander around everywhere?
I was worried about the child being alone and scared in an unfamiliar world.
"She probably got lost after going out because of Levinas..."
"No. That's definitely not it."
Levinas's self-blame was growing.
Even Saebyeok, unusually, wore an anxious expression.
What should we do?
Should we ask the guild members for help?
Just as I was about to consider this, I heard the girl's voice from beyond an alley.
"Whine..."
It was the kind of sound scared puppies make.
Though faint, my ears picked it up clearly.
"Found her!"
"You found her!"
"Yeah! Over there!"
I ran with the children towards the direction of the sound.
We had to squeeze through various alleys to reach the girl.
At the end of the last alley.
We saw the girl at the far end of the street.
In the arms of the girl, who was looking around with frightened eyes, was something.
"Doggy!"
Levinas ran towards the girl faster than anyone else.
The girl's tail started wagging rapidly when she spotted Levinas.
"Heh...!"
The girl's condition didn't look good.
Her clothes were dirtier and more torn than when we first met her, and she had injuries all over her body.
"Doggy, Levinas is sorry for being mean."
"Heh."
Lick-
The girl licked Levinas's cheek and held out what she had been carrying in her arms.
It was a small, fat, old CRT television.
"Ah..."
Only then did I realize why the child had gone outside.
And why her body was so dirty.
She had been searching for a TV all day.
To cheer Levinas up.
My tail started wagging rapidly at the child's pure-hearted gesture.
"Doggy, what's this?"
Levinas tilted her head, looking at the CRT TV.
She didn't seem to recognize it because it was so different from the thin, large TV at home.
"Levinas, this is a TV. I think she's giving it to you."
"Ah...?!"
Levinas's horned rabbit eyes widened.
She looked like she couldn't believe it.
Yet her body was bouncing slightly, expressing gratitude to the child who had given her the TV.
"But I'm not sure if it'll work. The cables might be different too..."
"Can we try it at home?! Can we?!"
Levinas stomped her feet excitedly.
She was back to her usual self, with no trace of gloominess.
"Yeah. Let's take it home and try."
We returned home carrying the CRT TV.
Even though it was late at night, we couldn't see Sophia or Yeoreum.
"King, do you know how to connect the TV?"
"Hmm... Let's take a look?"
I took out all the cables from the back of the TV.
I thought it wouldn't be compatible because it was a CRT, but surprisingly, there was a cable that fit.
Luckily, it was different from the world I used to live in.
"Does it work?! Does it work?!"
"I don't know? Levinas, want to press the power button?"
"Do I press this?"
"Yeah. That square thing."
Click- Levinas pressed the power button on the CRT TV.
The screen turned on with the characteristic electronic sound of old TVs.
"...!"
"Oh."
The image quality was terrible.
You could almost see each pixel if you focused.
The size was less than a quarter of the TV we used to watch.
I hoped Levinas wouldn't be disappointed.
I glanced at Levinas to check her reaction.
"......"
Levinas changed channels with an expressionless face.
On the cartoon channel that children love most, a horned rabbit cartoon was playing.
"Woo!"
"Woo?"
"Ah!"
Hurray!
Levinas threw her hands up in the air.
She even jumped up and down.
What a relief.
In the face of the child's kind heart who had brought the TV, the image quality didn't matter at all.
"Gaeul doggy is awesome!"
"Gaeul doggy?"
"Yeah! From now on, doggy is Gaeul!"
"Gaeuli."
The dog girl.
No, Gaeul wagged her tail.
She seemed to like the name.
"Is Gaeul okay? Don't you have an original name?"
"Gaeuli good."
I see.
If Gaeul likes it, that's fine.
The new child's name was Gaeul.
