Chapter 51: Chapter 51 He Saw the Light, and He Saw Her (1)_1

Having always been prompt in responding to Zhang Te’s queries, Han Jingnian nodded slightly and uttered, "Alright," the very instant the complete sentence fell from Zhang Te’s mouth.

Zhang Te, who narrowly escaped death from the phrase "fatal beauty," immediately rushed towards the bedside.

Just as he was about to grab the phone left behind by Xia Wan’an, he felt a chilling glare, sharp as a knife, shooting towards him. Immediately, he withdrew his action, discreetly rubbing his faintly aching wrist, "Mr. Han, don’t forget to take your wife’s phone."

Han Jingnian, paying him no mind, leisurely walked over to the bedside and picked up Xia Wan’an’s phone.

On the way home, Han Jingnian, seated in the rear of the car, gazed out the window at the ever retracting scenery, his mind suddenly reverting to the scene from the previous night.

Upon finishing his work last night, he approached the elevator, only to remember that it was under maintenance for the day. He decided to take the stairs, but halfway up, all the stairway lights went out.

The stairway windows were small, and they did not face the main road bustling with people. Hence, not a single beam of light was reflected into the stairwell, and his entire world was consequently plunged into darkness.

Darkness was his greatest weakness. This weakness did not come from birth, but from his early childhood, an event he dared not think about for years that nonetheless uncontrollably invaded his thoughts whenever he was surrounded by darkness - this event caused him to be terrified of the dark from that point onwards.

In the words of a doctor, he had "nyctophobia".

Hence, he had never allowed himself to be present in a place without light over the years. Even when sleeping, there would always be a lamp lit on his bedside table...

Last night, when he was enveloped in total darkness, the familiar symptoms overwhelmed him instantly, like a tsunami - palpitations, sweating, difficulty in breathing, trembling, and weakness in his limbs...

That was the most difficult moment for him, standing on the brink of death, desperate to resist. It was at his closest proximity to death that he saw the light... and her.

"Mr. Han, we’re here."

Zhang Te’s voice jolted Han Jingnian out of his trance, and he found himself already outside his house without realizing it.

Did he just... spend the entire journey thinking about her?

The fingertips holding her phone trembled slightly.

...

Upon leaving the office, Xia Wan’an realized that, without knowing when and how, tears had streamed down her face.

She hastily pulled out a tissue from her bag to wipe her eyes and hurriedly motioned to an available taxi to stop.

Heading into the taxi, she gave the driver her address, then turned her gaze out of the window.

Like a spell had been cast upon her, his indifferent voice persisted in her ears, "When did she enter the Han Family?"

Her eyes welled up again, and the tears she had tried to restrain flowed down her cheeks.

The taxi driver noticed she was crying and handed her a few tissues, "Miss, life is always a day less, always more bitter than sweet, so try to make yourself as happy as possible. Wipe your tears and stop crying."

Xia Wan’an thanked the driver politely and accepted the tissues. As she bent her head to wipe her tears, there was a bitter taste in her heart - even a stranger would comfort her when they saw her upset, but him... but him... forget about his heart, he had never even looked into her eyes.
