Chapter 38: Chapter 38: Just Coming Back to Live (2)_1
"How was it that he had suddenly returned?
While Xia Wan’an was lost in thought, she heard the sound of footsteps coming from outside the dining room.
Without thinking, she quickly reached for the soup in front of her on the table and gulped down half of the bowl. After she was sure she wouldn’t leave any trace, she put the bowl back on the table.
Just then, the figure of Han Jingnian appeared at the entrance to the dining room.
As Xia Wan’an turned her head to look at him, from the corner of her eye, she saw the note she had written on the table. Seeing that the ink of the words had not yet dried and was still a little noticeable, she hurriedly reached over to wipe away the oily smear. Having done that, she then tried to feign indifference as she turned to look at Han Jingnian, who had now entered the dining room, and managed to give him a calm smile, "Oh, you’re back?"
Surprisingly, Han Jingnian responded with a single "mmhmm", before his gaze fell onto the table.
He had seen her acting flustered. She seemed like she was trying to hide something, but apart from some oil stains, he couldn’t see anything on the table...
An unfinished word, possibly "Wei," next to a half-eaten bowl of soup... and two sets of chopsticks. Why did she have two sets?
Seeing Han Jingnian fixated on the second set of chopsticks, Xia Wan’an quickly offered up, "There were two pairs that had fallen on the ground..."
Then, after a slight pause, Xia Wan’an added, "Have you... had dinner yet? Would you like..."
Before she could finish speaking, he interrupted her, as always, his voice indifferent, "I already ate."
"Oh, okay. Let me clean this up then." She said as her somewhat disappointed eyes fell onto the table.
Han Jingnian poured himself a glass of water in the dining room before he left for his study.
After tidying up, Xia Wan’an read for a while, then returned to their master bedroom.
Seeing it was still early, she hazarded a guess that Han Jingnian wouldn’t be returning to the bedroom any time soon. After having a bath, she was applying ointment to her back with difficulty, when the bedroom door opened, and Han Jingnian walked in.
Even though they had been intimate, Xia Wan’an instinctively clutched her robe around her body.
She was about to head to the bathroom to finish applying the ointment when he blocked her path.
Without speaking, he took the ointment from her hand, and pulled her down to sit on the bed, removing her robe to apply the ointment on her back.
Xia Wan’an was so tense she dared not breathe. The room was quiet apart from the faint smell of herbal medicine that filled the air.
It didn’t take him long to finish applying the ointment, but his fingertips lingered on her waist, reluctant to pull away. She could vaguely sense what his touch suggested. Just when she was wondering if she should break this sinister yet ambiguous atmosphere, he suddenly stood up and went to the bathroom.
By the time Han Jingnian came out of the bathroom, Xia Wan’an had already put on her pajamas and was lying in bed.
He had rarely come home over the past two years, but whenever he did return, it always led to the same thing. Xia Wan’an thought tonight would have been no different, but to her surprise, Han Jingnian lay down and closed his eyes, appearing to be on the verge of falling asleep.
Xia Wan’an looked at Han Jingnian incredulously, then looked at him again... Was he...just planning to sleep?
