Xia Wan’an hesitated for a moment, but seeing that the sobbing didn’t show any signs of stopping, she walked through the rose bushes, following the sound.

About ten meters in, Xia Wan’an saw a small figure next to a brilliantly blooming yellow rose.

It was a girl, crouching on the ground, burying her face in her knees, her shoulders shaking violently. It seemed as if she had suffered a great injustice, crying so heartbrokenly.

Xia Wan’an put the osmanthus brew on the ground, then reached out and gently patted the girl’s back.

The girl turned her head subconsciously and upon seeing Xia Wan’an’s face, a hint of surprise flashed in her tear-filled eyes.

Xia Wan’an was equally surprised. She never expected that the girl crying here would be Han Jingnian’s cousin, Han Yixiao, the little mute girl she had met once before.

Upon seeing Xia Wan’an, Han Yixiao quickly stopped crying. She wiped away her tears and made a few gestures toward Xia Wan’an.

Xia Wan’an assumed from Han Yixiao’s reactions that she was simply upset and had been crying here when she happened upon her. Xia Wan’an was about to console her further, when she noticed, out of the corner of her eye, bruises on Han Yixiao’s arm, the kind that looked like they were caused by a whip.

There was not just one bruise but several crisscrossed ones. Some had scabbed over while others were still bleeding. It looked as if she had just been beaten...

Xia Wan’an reflexively grabbed Han Yixiao’s wrist: "How did you get these injuries on your arm?"

Han Yixiao suddenly pulled her arm back as if greatly startled, hid it in her sleeve, got up and ran towards the garden

However, she had only taken a few steps when Xia Wan’an grabbed her arm again, "Yixiao, who gave you these bruises on your arm? Does your grandmother know? Does your sister-in-law know? Does your mother know? What about Han Jingnian, do they know?"

Han Yixiao’s tears, which had stopped, started flowing again. She kept shaking her head at Xia Wan’an, and making unintelligible noises.
