Chapter 27: Chapter 27 No Rings at All (1)_1
Xia Wan’an barely knew anyone in this room. The only person she knew somewhat, Zhang Te, was too busy to help. Therefore, she found a lonely corner with dim light and began to while away the time alone.
Perhaps because the place was crowded and her location was too remote, the internet connection was poor. After playing with her phone for a while and finding the webpage load speed unbearable, she stuffed her phone back into her purse and closed her eyes.
Despite the noisy environment, she was able to sleep like a log.
What eventually woke her from her sleep was the conversation between two strangers.
"Honey, why did you come over here alone?"
"I just felt a little tired and wanted to find a quiet place to rest."
"Well, darling, I’ll stay here with you."
"You don’t have to. You’re quite busy here. You go on. I’ll be okay by myself..."
"Then, honey, let me stay with you for five more minutes..."
"..."
Unable to hold back, Xia Wan’an opened her eyes to look at the source of the voices.
Not far from her left, sitting there was a couple.
They were very close to her. She could hear their conversation clearly. The content was trivial, yet Xia Wan’an inexplicably felt a pang of envy.
"Husband, it’s been five minutes. Go take care of your business. Don’t worry about me..."
"Allow me to stay with you for another five minutes. Don’t be upset, I just want to be with you. Or how about this, darling, come with me..."
"No, there are all men there, wouldn’t it be inappropriate for me to go?"
"It’s all right. Plus, I feel more at ease with you by my side. Let’s go..."
The woman didn’t refuse. She smiled and stood up with the man.
The woman was wearing a long dress. Perhaps afraid she would trip, the man stood up first and adjusted her dress before they left together.
As they faded into the distance, Xia Wan’an could still faintly hear their conversation.
"Darling, don’t worry, I’m bound to be successful. Once I am, I’ll replace the ring on your finger with a bigger one..."
As the couple drifted far away enough to make their conversation indecipherable, silence returned around her.
Xia Wan’an looked at the spot where they had just been seated, dazed for a while, then lowered her gaze to her own hand.
Her delicate fingers, clean and white, showed no trace of a diamond ring, let alone a wedding ring ...
She looked up, scanned over the banquet hall and easily spotted Han Jingnian.
He was holding a wine glass, standing dashing under a crystal lamp, engaging in a conversation. He spoke little, mostly listening to the other person, but was polite, occasionally nodding to show that he was paying attention.
She had excused herself saying she was tired and needed a rest, to which he simply nodded and let her leave. She never returned and he never sought her; as if her presence or absence made no difference to him...
Xia Wan’an lowered her eyes, concealing the sadness in them, the index finger of her left hand, rubbing the ring finger of her right hand repeatedly...
Perhaps she was so lost in thought that she didn’t even notice the footsteps approaching her.
