Chapter 263: Chapter 263 I Have Always Been Here (1)_1
"It’s all my fault, all my fault... I’ve brought this upon you all, I deserve to die, I deserve to die!"
Upon hearing Han Jingnian break down once again, Xia Wan’an, though terrified, found a surprising reserve of courage. She abruptly jumped to her feet and launched herself at him, arms wrapping around Jingnian.
Almost without thinking, Jingnian broke free from Xia Wan’an, throwing her roughly onto the ground.
Ignoring her pain, Xia Wan’an rose and stubbornly embraced Jingnian once more, "Han Jingnian, it’s me... Xia Wan’an, Han Jingnian..."
Jingnian couldn’t take in her words. The darkness was drenching him so deeply in his own nightmares that he couldn’t pull himself out.
His only thought was to break free from the person shackling him.
Having failed once, Xia Wan’an was literally clinging onto him with all her might this time.
Still, Jingnian bit by bit managed to pry her loose, dramatically tearing her from him but halting just as he was about to cast her aside.
Xia Wan’an, suppressing her creeping dread, was kissing him.
Gradually, she felt his grip on her lessen and his distressed emotions slowly regain calm.
Only after he had completely calmed down did Xia Wan’an leave his lips, "Han Jingnian..."
With the sound of her voice, she clearly felt the man’s body shudder violently. His voice then arose from above her, raspy and weak, "It’s you, isn’t it?"
Xia Wan’an softened her tone, much like she was comforting a child, and responded gently, "Yes, it’s me."
"I’ve always been right by your side, so you have no reason to be afraid..."
The darkness was eerily silent. Han Jingnian showed no response whatsoever.
After a long while, Xia Wan’an finally heard his muffled voice, "You’ve always been here?"
"Yes, I’ve always been here..."
The words out of Xia Wan’an’s mouth were as tender as ever, like a spring breeze brushing gently over the earth, providing Jingnian’s heart with an instant sense of security.
Jingnian’s eyes suddenly stung, and he couldn’t utter a word.
He raised his hand, grabbed her arm, pulled her toward him, and held her firmly in his embrace.
He held on so tightly as if he was trying to embed her whole being into his own.
Xia Wan’an was a bit hurt by his grip, but she didn’t make a sound.
Who knows how long it had been, Jingnian finally spoke again. His tone bore a hint of tension and anxiety that he couldn’t quite hide, "Was... was I just now being terrible?"
Upon hearing this, Xia Wan’an felt as if a countless number of needles were gently piercing her heart, causing waves of ache.
Just hearing about his childhood from her grandmother had already seemed cruel enough, but what about him, the one who actually experienced it all? How did he endure all that?
He was only five years old at the time... Witnessing his own father die right in front of him, helpless and alone...
Xia Wan’an had a lump in her throat. She swallowed painfully several times before barely managing to croak out, "No, you were not terrible..."
