Chapter 53: Guilt In Su Meilin’s Heart
Chapter 53: Guilt In Su Meilin’s Heart
Su Meilin was still at the hospital. She hadn’t returned to her apartment since yesterday. Still wearing the same clothes. Still carrying that tired, sleepless look on her face.
She couldn’t bring herself to go back—not after everything that happened. After realizing the luxury she lived in was built from other people’s money... and misery.
A mix of guilt and hatred toward Jin Haolong twisted inside her.
And then, the TV in the waiting room startled her with a breaking news alert:
"An accident occurred in Lingway Valley this afternoon. A BMW crashed into the valley and exploded. The driver was declared dead at the scene, his body severely burned and unrecognizable."
"Authorities believe the victim was a man in his mid-thirties..."
Su Meilin turned her head away from the screen. She didn’t want to hear anymore. Her hands trembled in her lap.
She didn’t know whether what she did was right. Whether she was finally free... or just walked into a different kind of hell.
Then, a hand gently touched her shoulder.
Startled, she looked up. Zhao Yiming and Mr. Wu were standing in front of her.
"Why are you still here, young lady?! Go home and get some rest!" Mr. Wu scolded her immediately, arms crossed, his usual stern look on his face.
Zhao Yiming, on the other hand, looked at her quietly—his eyes filled with something hard to describe. Concern... and something deeper.
He sighed. "Meilin, come back with me to my apartment, okay? I know you’re not comfortable staying at yours..."
"I’m fine here," she replied softly. "If I’m not here, who’s going to wait for Madam He?"
"Hah! Are you blind? Of course, I will!" Mr. Wu shook his head in exasperation. "Come on now, go home and sleep! You’re too young and beautiful to be growing eye bags like that!"
He plopped down beside her with a dramatic sigh.
"He’s right," Zhao Yiming added. "And Mr. Wu’s not alone. Zhang Chuan is staying too."
At that, a colorful-haired young man strolled in with a plastic bag full of food, munching on a pork bun.
"Ah! Mr. Wu, look what I found! Pork buns for breakfast!" Zhang grinned, waving the bag around.
He handed one to Meilin, and Mr. Wu grabbed one for himself.
"Eat this, young lady. You’re pale as a ghost," Mr. Wu said before biting into his bun with gusto.
Meilin accepted it wordlessly and took a small bite.
Then she looked at Zhao Yiming. "Are you... going to report this to the police?"
Zhao Yiming blinked, caught off guard. He didn’t expect that question.
But Mr. Wu was quicker.
"Of course we will!" he barked. "If the police can’t bring justice, then I’ll do it with my own two hands!"
"Whoaaah~! Mr. Wu, so badass!" Zhang Chuan chimed in, impressed.
Zhao Yiming sighed in relief, realizing they were talking about a different case. He then explained, "Yanyu and Li are checking nearby CCTV footage now."
"We still have the audio recording of that conversation... but we’d rather not use it unless we have no choice."
After all, the Golden Earth Group probably suspected they were behind the disappearance of the black ledger. They wanted to keep that fact hidden for as long as possible.
"I see... That’s good." Su Meilin gave a faint smile, though her eyes remained distant. Something was still bothering her, something she couldn’t shake.
A shadow still lingered over her heart.
She suddenly turned to Mr. Wu and bowed deeply.
"I apologize, Mr. Wu, for what happened to your wife..."
"Huh? What are you saying, young lady!" he responded, confused.
"You might not know this, but my husband... he had a twisted relationship with the Golden Earth Group," she said, voice thick with guilt. "And... he might’ve been the one responsible for what happened to your wife."
She paused, trying to steady her trembling breath.
"I... I know I wasn’t the one who did it, but as his wife, I still feel responsible. So I’m truly sorry, from the bottom of my heart." She bowed again, fists clenched tightly.
"Instead of Zhao Yiming... I’ll be the one to pay all the medical bills for your wife."
Her hands shook as she spoke, but her heart felt just a little lighter. At last, she’d told the truth.
Mr. Wu stood frozen in place, stunned.
Then he stepped forward and firmly grasped her shoulders.
"Young lady... what you’re saying is nonsense!" he said sharply. "This has nothing to do with you. So don’t lower your head like that!"
"B-but still!" Su Meilin’s tears finally spilled as she bit her lip hard, choking down the words that hurt the most.
"I kept living in comfort every day... My bowl was always full, my wardrobe overflowing, and not once did I suffer an ounce of hardship while all of you were suffering because of him!"
"All the food I ate, the places I enjoyed, the money I spent—everything was built from people’s pain. My sin... was choosing to stay ignorant."
Mr. Wu let out a heavy sigh.
"Fine. If you insist, then I’ll forgive you, lady." He gently patted her shoulder. "So stop blaming yourself. Raise your head now, proud and strong. Because you’ve been forgiven."
Her shoulders trembled, but she slowly looked up. She finally saw Mr. Wu’s eyes clearly, and the shame she’d carried for so long began to dissolve in the warmth of his words.
"Thank you..." she whispered, voice barely audible.
"What a strange young lady," Mr. Wu said, shaking his head. "Ignorance might be a sin... but that doesn’t make you evil. It just means you need to try harder to see the full picture. After all... you were a victim too."
He gave her a gentle, understanding smile.
Su Meilin could only nod in return, tears continuing to fall—but her heart, for the first time in a long while, felt free.
While Zhao Yiming smiles at the peaceful scene, looking at Meilin finally able to let go of her guilt.
’But this isn’t over yet...’ he thought, ’This is the beginning of everything.’
