Chapter 618: Chapter 618: The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing
"This little white rabbit really goes for the throat when provoked, huh? Just a few words in and she has this attendant so flustered they don’t even know what to say, just pointing at the girl and stammering, ’you, you, you...’ Looks like she hit the nail on the head."
"Oh, so my spiel left you speechless, huh? Can’t find the words to respond because there’s no rebuttal, right? Everything I’m saying is just plain truth. You might as well admit defeat, go back and tell your manager you’re quitting, no need to waste any more of this place’s valuable resources by working here, okay?"
Bai just wasn’t satisfied, feeling that she hadn’t yet caused enough heartache for the attendant, so she gives another jab that nearly drives them to rage. But no matter how hard they try, they can’t find the words to lash out, especially when they had initially felt a tinge of jealousy over this beautiful woman.
However, when they saw what the woman was wearing and realized how far below their own standard it was, their sense of superiority swelled up. They thought this type of woman was inherently like this, having no real qualities to speak of, especially being penniless, hoping to snag a rich husband. They felt such people have an intense vanity and certainly couldn’t resist their own impulses to blabber on.
Their plan was to quickly get this woman out of here; they couldn’t let her catch a wealthy husband on their watch. After all these years working here without finding a suitable spouse of their own, how could they let this pretty girl beat them to it? It would be admitting they were less than this pretty face, which was unacceptable.
So they hurled insults relentlessly, thinking this woman would be like the others, utterly deflated, unable to say a word, and slinking away in shame. Who knew she would dare to fire back, a twist the attendant hadn’t anticipated.
Now that Bai had vented her feelings, her heart felt at ease, and she reveled in the satisfaction. She thought she should have dropped the ladylike act sooner, what was there to pretend about?
She should have just let loose on the attendant from the start, letting out all the pent-up resentment. As the saying goes, "Only when you’ve cussed someone out do you feel cleansed inside." Holding back had made her feel like she was going to explode.
Feeling like she had smoke coming out of her crown chakra, it was lucky that she couldn’t hold it in anymore and just started to let it all out verbally. Seeing the attendant with a face as red as a liver was oddly amusing. Naturally overweight and unattractive, their face now was hilariously flushed.
Tsk, tsk, tsk, it was almost painful to look at, she couldn’t help wanting to burst out laughing. The attendant was furious, too. How dare this woman laugh at them? Having been insulted so much and she still had the nerve to laugh? Regardless, they resolved not to let this woman inside today. If she got in, they swore their name wasn’t Chen.
"What’s the point of all the talk? You’re not getting in here anyway. You can afford the high cost of entry? Let me ask you, aside from your face, what else do you have to offer? Just look at those worn-out shoes, they’re going to dirty our carpets.
You know our carpets are expensive. I bet those shoes were picked up from some street stall, right? They scream poverty."
Having reached the end of their tether, the attendant resorted to personal attacks, trying to maintain whatever dignity they had left. Gesturing emphatically at the supposed grandeur of the sum, they seemed to be trying to humiliate the woman. But even if they couldn’t shame her, they had to let out their own frustration, right? They couldn’t just let someone else demean them for nothing.
"Oh, miss, if your shoes can’t get in here, how much do you reckon your street stall sneakers are worth? I’m quite curious. Have the standards for attendants dropped so low? Anyone can work here these days, can they? With a mouth as filthy as yours, you shouldn’t be serving people at all," Shen Dong finally couldn’t bear to watch anymore, jumping in to take up for Bai. The attendant was ready to retort, but upon realizing that this was someone from a wealthy family, they promptly clammed up. Why is everyone on this woman’s side? What’s so great about her? Is it just because she has a pretty face?
What’s the big deal? Just wait until I’ve saved enough money to get plastic surgery and transform myself into one of those internet celebrities, just as pretty. Then, no one will be able to push me around."
As they entertained these thoughts, the rage burned within, but now they didn’t dare let out even the smallest peep, merely shrinking down in their spot. Bai glanced at Shen Dong and couldn’t help but enjoy a moment of recognition. Wasn’t he the one who gave her that card? Her savior had arrived, and now she could really lay into the attendant.
She had been irritated by this woman for a while, always disrespectful with her words. If it hadn’t been for her own soft-heartedness leaving the woman in one piece, maybe she would have spewed out something even harsher. Now that she had a way to humiliate her without even having to spit a single word, why not use it?
It would be too wasteful not to, so she feigned an intimacy, looping her arm through Shen Dong’s, acting like they were the closest couple. Shen Dong was caught off guard by the sudden move, feeling a pair of delicate hands encircle his own, then being pulled along. It was a strange sensation.
He would never forget this — a different feeling from being with Kang Yue. As Bai looped her arm, Shen Dong found himself smiling softly, feeling electric, especially with his arm cradled in her grasp. He could feel the warmth of the person beside him through the fabric of their clothes, and it was a remarkable sensation.
Moreover, the scent from her body wafted to his nostrils... it was especially delightful, as if he was immersed in a fragrant world. Suddenly finding themselves so close, he found it unfamiliar, but despite not being used to it, he didn’t pull away, instead savoring the moment.
