Chapter 780: What is love supposed to be like?
"Ahem!" Leo cleared his throat as Dragon approached, taking Hera’s vacated seat. He raised his chin, trying to maintain composure. "This is strange. You always come home in the evening."
"My wife complains that I spend too little time with her. So, as a good husband, I want to pacify her." Dragon smiled, crossing his legs. "I don’t want to disregard her longing and then be surprised if she finds comfort elsewhere."
"You think I like her?"
"That’s not what I’m saying, Mr. Wu." A shallow laugh escaped Dragon. "All I’m saying is she might like you in a way that might anger me."
"Hah..." Leo ran his tongue across his inner cheek, rendered speechless by his bluntness.
"So?" Dragon raised a brow, tilting his head. "What were you two discussing to make such a face?"
"What face?"
"You looked... surprised," Dragon guessed, intrigued. "Or was I mistaken?"
"If there’s something your wife could surprise me with, it’s how she doesn’t seem to fit in here at all," Leo smirked, recalling Hera’s advice and leveraging his ability to persuade any audience. "Though I blame her for my situation, I have to admit she’s different."
Dragon smiled in amusement. "You don’t know her," he said. "I don’t think you’d ever confidently claim she’s different because she’s not."
"You’re probably right." Leo nodded. "But right now, she’s different, and you know that."
"That’s right." Dragon shrugged. "If she wasn’t, she wouldn’t waste time thinking and arranging a beautiful vase. Instead, she’d break the vase and make you eat it."
Leo’s breathing slowed as he maintained his front. After realizing he wasn’t the greatest pretender in this house, Dragon’s words somehow made sense.
"Why?" he asked, summoning the courage he’d harbored for a lifetime. "What does Hera have that makes you go to such lengths?"
"Love." Dragon’s answer was succinct; he didn’t even think about it. "It might sound ridiculous to you, but I think it’s love."
"It’s not." Leo shook his head. "Love... shouldn’t feel like a cage."
"Oh? That’s interesting." Dragon arched a brow. "Tell me, Mr. Wu. What is love supposed to be like?"
"It should feel like... home." Leo drew a deep breath, relaxing his stiff shoulders. "Not a battlefield where every time you close your eyes, you dread what you two would become the next day."
He paused, gauging Dragon’s reaction. "Love is trust, Mr. Dragon. Even if you hesitate to trust, you will foolishly place your heart in someone else’s hands, hoping they won’t break it."
"You don’t trust her, and she doesn’t make you feel at home," he continued, gaining confidence the more he talked. "You don’t trust her because you know who she truly is and what she’s capable of. I don’t need you to tell me about her past, but what I see is that the Hera I know isn’t the same person you knew. Which led you to fight a battle only you know yourself."
"That... is not love, Mr. Dragon." Leo huffed, emphasizing his words calmly.
"Hmm..." Dragon hummed, processing Leo’s remarks. "Complicated indeed. So, why can’t I let her go? If this isn’t love, why would I fight against the world for her?"
"That..." Leo pondered. "Is something only you can answer. Although I can make a few guesses. Could it be attachment? Jealousy turned possessiveness? Interest, infatuation? Unrealistic expectations? Or good sex?"
"You can answer your question if your emotions fall into those categories," he added. "It could also be a need — a hunger for stability, considering your rollercoaster life."
"Hah... that’s interesting," Dragon nodded, maintaining a cool demeanor. When he met Leo’s eyes, a smirk curled his lips. "You’re quite the expert in this, huh?"
"I won’t call myself an expert."
"Of course, you won’t," Dragon chuckled. "Even with countless past relationships, you’re stuck on someone out of reach."
Leo instantly froze as his eyes slowly dilated, holding his breath.
"Heaven Liu... that’s her name, right?" Dragon observed Leo’s reaction, chuckling as the latter gradually drained of color. "I met her some time ago. She’s beautiful — remarkably gorgeous and skilled. I was surprised to hear you two once had this complicated relationship; you communicate daily like lovers and then suddenly, she’s married and was giving birth to a child she had with another man."
"That must have hurt you deeply, Mr. Wu."
Leo closed his eyes as he lowered his head. He drew a deep breath before he reopened his eyes, raising his head to meet his gaze.
"Yes, that’s right." He admitted under his breath. "She left me without saying a word and then she reappeared in my life, only to find out she’s married and had a son. I kept holding on to her and our memories together, hopeful we could rekindle what should’ve been a happy love story. I went so far as to believe someone else’s ridiculous claims to make myself feel better, to give myself a little bit of hope that she might come back."
A bitter smile appeared on his face as he remembered the past
"In the end, due to my selfishness, I almost lost her," Leo let out a regretful laugh, mixed emotions flickering across his eyes. "It makes me angry that she made me feel many emotions, only for her to stop and be with another man. I feel like she simply played with my heart, and then chewed it out when she had enough. However, she’s happy with him and their son."
He paused as his voice started to shake. "So, even if I was angry, and that I was hurt, I let her go." Leo nodded at Dragon. "Love is like that sometimes, Mr. Dragon. If you love someone, you’d let them go. Even if it hurts to see that you’re not the reason for their happiness anymore, you’d step out of their way even if you’re dying inside."
Leo maintained a subtle smile as he expressed his version of love which ended up in a heartbreak. Meanwhile, Dragon assessed the man’s face, his expression plain, keeping his thoughts a mystery to the person across from him.
