Chapter 746: Demand more

It was not that Dragon didn’t understand Hera that night when he asked for her hand in marriage. Hera was carrying a heavy burden on her shoulders, and the idea of marriage was off the table. A part of his heart already knew she would refuse his proposal, but as he claimed, he was tired of just standing behind her.

His feelings for her were genuine, even though he was unsure about how to categorize them. Was it love? It was certainly not infatuation. Dragon might not have known exactly what his heart desired at that time, but he knew that these inexplicable feelings for her would continue to grow.

He was right. These feelings grew, and their invasive vines wrapped around his decaying heart. His mind contemplated various and unsettling ways to make her his. And this led to the situation in the present time.

[PRESENT TIME]

Dragon’s eyes softened as he watched Hera eat the meal heartily. It was a stark contrast to that memory in the same setting. However, unlike before, Dragon couldn’t feel the same sincerity he felt years ago. His eyes, which mirrored hers, might have told a different story, but his heart now knew exactly what he wanted from her.

"Why are you not eating?" Hera’s eyes twinkled with genuine wonder. "Don’t you like the food?"

"I am lost admiring you," he replied, watching her blush as he lied just enough. "Just watching you eat already warms my heart, Hera."

"Frank," Hera tucked a portion of her hair behind her ear. "Stop looking at me like that. I’m getting a little nervous."

"I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable." A soft chuckle escaped his lips. "I just can’t help it when the most beautiful and smartest lady I’ve ever met is with me."

She glanced at him and pressed her lips into a thin line. "You’re making me embarrassed," she murmured as she looked away. Her cheeks turned a little more pink, flattered by the way he looked at her and his sweet words.

"Just eat," she said quietly. "I don’t think this will taste good if it gets cold."

"Alright," Dragon smiled in satisfaction as he sliced through the steak. As he did so, he glanced at her once again. She had already eaten half of the steak and seemed to enjoy it, despite the steak’s low grade and the fact that it was on the verge of rotting.

If this were in the past, she would complain. Back then, she complained, even though he put so much thought into that dinner. He had chosen the best and highest grade to feed her and had gone to great lengths to get that wine she nitpicked about. But now, look at her.

Hera was enjoying a cheap steak and wine.

"Anyway, thank you, Frank." After some time of silence, Hera recovered from the flattering situation. She mustered the courage to face him, smiling subtly. "I appreciate everything you have done for me and everything you’re still doing."

"You’re welcome, dear."

"I don’t know how to repay you for everything." She cast her eyes down, her smile turning a little bitter. "It’s a little overwhelming to always be on the receiving end."

"Dear," Dragon stretched his arm across the table to hold her hand. He waited for her to look back at him before he spoke. "You only need to recover. That is enough for me."

"What if I don’t?" her eyes softened. "What if... I’m not going to recover fully?"

"Please do not say that."

"I’m just saying, Frank," she pressed her lips into a thin line. "Even after I woke up, there were times when I didn’t feel any better than when I woke up from that long sleep. Sometimes, no matter how long I rest, I still feel tired when I wake up."

"That’s normal," he said reassuringly. "That’s part of your recovery. I’m not in a hurry, Hera. Take as much time as you need to recover. I’ve waited for six years. Waiting a little longer wouldn’t hurt."

"I know you are patient... but I don’t think I am." Hera bit her lips slightly as she slowly held the hand holding hers. She looked at their intertwined hands, smiling subtly and bitterly. "You know, I kept thinking about it. When I woke up, I didn’t really know you. You... were a stranger to me, but I am not to you."

She slowly lifted her gaze, locking eyes with him as she squeezed his hand. "Even when I saw our photos together before I fell into a coma, a part of me thinks that is not me. I don’t remember any of them; I don’t remember you or what my heart felt like in those times we were together before."

"While thinking about it, I can’t help but realize just how painful and unfair it was for you," she added, causing creases to appear between his brows. "You loved me before and waited for me, even if the chances of me waking up again were slim. But even when I woke up, there was another problem, and I don’t remember you."

"Are you saying..." Dragon trailed off as he thought this might end up just like that night. Although her words were different, the mere thought that she was thinking of leaving him again for his "own good" brought different emotions to his decaying heart.

She better not try, he thought. Or else, even if the doctors were against it, he would factory reset her. But before his mind could think of ways to fix her, Hera sighed deeply and smiled.

"I’m saying that just recovering isn’t enough," she expressed as a thin layer of tears coated her eyes. "I want to be the Hera, the wife you used to know. While it may seem impossible to regain my memories, I still want to create new ones with you and proudly call you my beloved husband."

Hera paused as she slowly slipped her fingers between the gap of his slender fingers. Her eyes brimmed with affection as she looked at their hands before lifting her eyes back to him.

"I want to love you, Frank. Just as much as you love me, or maybe even more than that," she confessed, expressing the sincerity of her heart. "So, don’t just ask me to recover. It’s not enough. You should demand more, will you?"
