Chapter 61: It’s a promise

Chapter 61: It’s a promise

"On a serious note." Heaven cleared her throat after minutes of praising her son to the heavens. She propped her arms against the table, eyes on Sebastian. "You know, no matter how amazing your actions this morning are, it’s still wrong, right?"

Sebastian pursed his lips, sliding his eyes to the side as he nodded.

"Do you understand why your father was furious?" Her brows rose, watching her son nod again. "It’s not because he doesn’t trust you or doesn’t acknowledge how special you are. It was actually the opposite."

She smiled warmly, tilting her head to the side. "No matter how mature and great you are, it was still dangerous. I’m still in disbelief at how you traveled on your own. Why didn’t you want your father to find you, knowing he’d turn this world upside down if he didn’t? I assume there’s a reason behind that."

Of course, there was a reason for that.

Sebastian studied her face, detecting the genuine curiosity in her eyes. A shallow breath slipped past his nostrils, wondering if he should reveal the reason behind his discretion.

"Because one can run away from him, but they can never hide." He lowered his eyes while deep lines appeared between her brows.

’What did he mean by that?’ she wondered, waiting for her son to clarify that vague remark.

"If you decided to run away, he’ll eventually find you. No. He’d know even before you can leave the city." Sebastian slowly raised his head to meet her eyes. "Someone has to know which route to take and an expert to conceal traces. Father’s connections are not one to underestimate. He can mobilize an entire army in one phone call."

Surprise slowly turned up on Heaven’s face while her heart slowly melted like snow on the first day of spring. Surely, this child’s mother was lucky to have him as her son. Not only he was clever, cute, and fun, but it seemed he didn’t hold a grudge against her.

Considering what kind of mother she was to him, hearing that Sebastian was learning how to evade his father for her was... very kind. At the same time, the bitterness she had for the original Heaven increased to another level. Just because Heaven couldn’t take care of her son, Sebastian took it upon himself that he should take care of his mother.

She didn’t deserve him.

’Heaven Liu... you are one lucky lass.’ She smiled, patting his head gently. "Thank you for thinking of me, but I won’t run away. Not now, not in the future."

"It seemed you misunderstood my relationship with your father." She sighed as she retrieved her hand from him. "It’s true that we didn’t have a good relationship before because I was sick, Basti. I was very sick. I did and said things I didn’t mean, and I genuinely regret that."

Sebastian studied his mother’s face, only hearing this ’sickness’ just now. "Are you dying?"

"Haha. No, I’m not." Her lips stretched from ear to ear until her teeth were showing. "I’m... better."

Her eyes softened as she cupped her cheek. "I’m much better now that I think I can take care of my boy."

Sebastian opened his lips, but no words came out. All he could do for a moment was to look at his mother’s loving eyes, sensing this unfamiliar warmth her eyes were giving off. Not that he wanted to complain. It was just that he wasn’t used to it.

"What kind of sickness did you have? Are you really cured?" he asked. "If not, just hang in there while I research for a cure."

"Haha. Oh, Sebastian Zhu." Another wave of chuckles escaped Heaven’s mouth, almost speechless at the conversation she was having. "Do not worry. I just had a sickness of the heart and brain, but I’m fine now. Still, thank you."

"Heart and brain... Are you sure?"

"Yes!" Heaven grinned. "Anyway, back to our main topic. Don’t do that again, alright?"

Sebastian slid his eyes to the corner to avoid his mother’s eyes. "Yes."

"Can you please look at me as you answer?"

"I don’t promise." Sebastian corrected as he faced her squarely. "I won’t do it again unless the situation calls for it."

"Well... I guess that can’t be helped." Heaven shrugged. "Since you understand your fault, can you say sorry to Dad and your grandparents? Also, to those who were worried sick when they heard you disappeared?"

Reluctance instantly shone in his round eyes, making her sigh.

’Should I press on it more?’ wondered Heaven, thinking that this was a tricky situation.

She was grateful she had the opportunity to have a heart-to-heart talk with him without a problem. Still, she couldn’t forget her previous actions. Doing much might ruin everything. Even so, Sebastian needed to learn. No matter how amused she was with him, Sebastian had to apologize.

"Well..."

"Fine." Heaven blinked when Sebastian answered. "I’ll apologize for worrying everyone, but on one condition."

"What is it?"

Sebastian clutched his lap while keeping his eyes on her. "If ever you wanted to run away, I’m the first person to know. My plan today might have failed miserably. However, it won’t be next time."

’I’d rather prefer it if it fails next time,’ she thought almost immediately, thinking that her son might disappear successfully next time. They might have a harder time finding him, but then again, all she needed to do was make sure he wouldn’t think of running away from home.

"I promise." Heaven lifted her hand with her pinky erect while the rest of her fingers were curled into a ball. "Pinky promise?"

Sebastian furrowed his brows, looking at her pinky with slight dismay.

’That look is kinda insulting.’ Heaven cleared her throat, getting rid of her inner dialogue, as she didn’t want to feel disheartened. "Come now. Let’s seal this promise."

"Alright." Sebastian looked away as he reluctantly wrapped his pinky around hers, failing to notice how Heaven’s face twitched at his reluctance.

"Hehe." She forced a short laugh, feeling like she was the kid here and not him. "That’s a promise now, okay?"

Sebastian glanced at her, only to see her bright smile. His slightly stiff expression relaxed, nodding in agreement.

"It’s a promise," he whispered, making her grin even broader.
