Chapter 343: [Bonus Chapter]It’s okay
Since Dominic wasn’t in the right state, Dane had to do all the preparations for her funeral. Dane didn’t bother Dominic with anything, letting his boss grieve for his loss.
"Sir?"
Sitting in the hallway just right outside the morgue, Dane called Dominic. But the latter didn’t react and just stared at the wall on the other side.
"Sir." Dane sighed. "They will cremate the young madam’s body and..."
"Where’s Basti?" Dominic didn’t look away from the wall, his face was pale and his eyes were swollen. "Does he already know?"
Dane pursed his lips. "The little master overheard some conversations. He’s with the second young master and he said they’ll be on the way. Your parents as well."
"I see."
"About the cremation..."
"Hold it off until they’re all here."
"Yes." Dane bowed, keeping the conversation short since it was obvious Dominic was barely holding on. "Sir, you should rest."
"No, thank you."
Dane’s brows rose, gazing at Dominic’s side profile. He was already used to Dominic’s emotionless countenance, but Dominic just looked dead right now.
"About the person... Marisol Chu, how was she?" Dominic muttered.
"She’s still being interrogated, sir."
"Kill her."
"Sir."
"I mean, keep her alive until I’m done with the funeral. I’ll bash her head in myself."
Dane frowned at the wicked remarks he was hearing, but he knew Dominic didn’t mean that. The latter had just lost his wife. Therefore, Dominic was not only in pain, but he was angry. His heart and mind were filled with different emotions and thus, Dane extended his patience and understanding.
"Your brother said he will bring you some clothes to change." Dane slipped his hand inside his suit pocket, taking out a small black ribbon for his boss. "The second young master said you should change into the clothes the young madam bought for you using her first paycheck."
Dominic slowly lowered his eyes and as soon as his gaze landed on the black ribbon in between Dane’s fingers, his heart sank.
"This... is really happening, huh?" he whispered with a dry and short laugh. He then took the ribbon, keeping it in his tight grasp. "Leave me alone for now, Dane."
"Yes. I’ll notify you once the little master is here and the Zhu family as well."
Dominic didn’t respond to Dane anymore, making the latter sigh. But Dane didn’t idle, knowing he had so much work to do tonight.
Meanwhile, as Dominic was left alone in the hallway, he slowly opened his palm. The small ribbon was small, but the meaning behind it cut through his already shattered heart.
This was happening for real.
The pain in his heart should’ve woken him up from this nightmare, but no. He knew he was wide awake.
"I’m sorry." Dominic bent over, burying his face in his palms. Tears once again overflowed from his eyes just when he thought he already emptied his stored tears. ’I don’t know how to tell Basti about this.’
On top of losing his beloved wife, Dominic was terrified to see his son. After all, Sebastian also lost his mother.
Just when everything was coming together, and their family had become a real one...
As a father, knowing this would devastate Sebastian, hurt him even more.
"Brother..." After minutes of nothing but silence and Dominic’s muffled sniffles, Axel’s voice pierced through the air. He stood in the middle of the hallway, eyes on his brother sitting in the waiting area, crying.
Until now, Axel was in shock at the news he had heard from Dane Zhang. He didn’t have time to feel anything about it because he immediately rushed to Sebastian, only to see his nephew throwing a huge tantrum.
But now that he stood in the middle of the hallway, eyes on his always composed brother breaking down, a tear rolled down his cheek.
’Is she really... gone?’ he wondered as if this was the only time reality hit him.
Axel took a deep breath, taking a step toward Dominic. He didn’t know how long it took him to reach his brother, but Axel sat down beside Dominic.
"Basti fell asleep after throwing a huge tantrum," he said to his brother, planting his hand on Dominic’s back. "He’s in Miriam and Princess’s care. They’ll look after him for now."
Axel bit his quivering lips, patting his brother’s trembling back. "He’ll be okay. And Mr. Zhang stopped everyone from coming in here. So... you can cry more, brother. No one will hear you. It’s okay."
Dominic kept his face buried in his palms, teeth clench.
"It hurts..." he admitted through his gritted teeth. "How... am I going to live now?"
"I... don’t know." Axel shrugged, unable to stop his own tears, nor did he have any idea how to comfort his brother.
How could he comfort someone after losing his other half?
Heaven had been with them for over five years now, but the past months with her were different. All those years of nonchalance were nothing compared to those beautiful days she created afterward. Yet, those months were too short.
"Everything will be okay." Axel huffed, telling himself to be strong for his brother and nephew. Even though he was in pain at losing his sister and filled with guilt for not being kind to her in the past five years, Axel had to be strong.
His pain... was nothing compared to the pain in his brother’s and nephew’s hearts. He had to be strong so Dominic could lean on him at least. In this situation, it was the least he could do.
"Everything will be okay..." he whispered, patting Dominic’s back gently. "... for sure. We’ll figure things out."
Dominic didn’t say anything anymore, crying his heart out as if he hadn’t been crying since receiving the news. Meanwhile, Axel stayed with him in quietness, patting his brother’s back until Dominic calmed down after another hour.
When Dane came back and told them their parents had arrived, Axel volunteered to greet them. The two didn’t want to bother Dominic, but the latter spoke.
"I’ll meet them once I changed." Dominic sniffed hard, his eyes almost squinting at how swollen they were.
"But —"
"It’s okay." Dominic cleared his throat, pushing himself up. When he faced Dane, he tried to smile but failed miserably. "Thank you, Mr. Zhang, for taking charge. But I’ll take it from here."
Worry filled Dane’s eyes. "Sir, are you sure?"
"Yes." Dominic then set his eyes on his brother, planting a hand on Axel’s shoulder and squeezing it. "Thank you, brother. It’s okay to cry too. I know you love her."
Axel bit his entire bottom lip, holding back the tears he kept holding back just because he wanted to be strong for his brother and nephew.
"I’ll see Mom and Dad and Grandma too." Dominic patted Axel’s shoulder before tipping his head. "She’s in there. She’ll be happy if you visit her one last time."
With that being said, Dominic cast Dane a look and nodded at him, leaving Axel all alone to give him privacy. And also, leaving the small black ribbon on the vacant seat beside him.
Meanwhile, Axel kept his eyes on his brother’s back before turning his head to the morgue.
