Chapter 321: [Bonus Chapter]Rot in jail
[PRESENT TIME]
"I said, your father... deserves to die, knowing his beloved daughter wasn’t there for him but me."
Heaven felt like someone just splashed her with cold water upon hearing Paula’s last sentiments. What Paula said sounded weird. That wasn’t in her memories.
’No, wait...’ Heaven immediately rummaged through her memories, only to realize she missed one important detail.
Five years ago, the doctor mentioned in passing that Paula was present at the time of his father’s death. However, Heaven was so heartbroken she shunned all the information she was being told. Even during the funeral, all she did was bawl her eyes out and grieve.
Heaven didn’t think of anything else but the pain of losing her father. The only parent she had. Foul play never crossed her since her father had the kindest soul. Who would want to kill him?
"You..." Heaven marched toward Paula with large steps, recalling all the happening that night of the afterparty. She stretched her hand out, grabbing Paula’s collar tightly.
"That night... you..." Heaven panted, in disbelief that she only put the puzzle pieces together just now when all these memories had been in her mind since the beginning. If only she dwelled on them further, she wouldn’t be so surprised now.
"Paula Shen." She breathed out, tightening her grip and causing more crease on Paula’s shirt. "It was you."
In contrast to the suppressed anger in her eyes, Paula was quite relaxed. The corner of her mouth hooked up, satisfied at the sight before her.
Yes. This was what Paula wanted. To watch Heaven crumble before her eyes.
"Haha..." a weak laugh escaped Paula’s. "It took you over five years to realize that, Heaven? Yes. That night, I put that drug in your drink, but don’t be mad. I didn’t want to do it! I was forced to do it."
"Son of a bitch..."
"Why, Heaven? In the end, everything turned out well for you, right? You were able to tie Dominic Zhu into a marriage because of a child!" Paula clicked her tongue in irritation, voice thundering and taunting. "Although it’s still a mystery how you ended up with Dominic Zhu instead of that asshole, you still have to thank me! You don’t need to work anymore. Your life is set! You don’t need to pray or do anything to have food on the table; you can afford anything in this world!"
"This is what I hate about you," she hissed. "You have everything you prayed for, and yet, you still have complaints?! Just how ungrateful can you be —"
Paula abruptly stopped when Heaven raised her other hand, shutting her eyes as she anticipated the pain. But alas, the pain didn’t come. She carefully peeked through her one eye, only to see Heaven’s hand frozen in midair.
"Paula Shen, I’ve always known you are so fucking dumb, but I didn’t realize you are this dumb and twisted," Heaven remarked through her gritted teeth. "I can beat you up right now just to set you straight, but there’s no point in stooping so low."
"Hah."
"Listen to me, Paula." Heaven lowered her raised hand, grabbing Paula’s collar with both her hands now. "You were right. In the end, my life turned out good and I will never trade it for anything. However, I will not thank you for it. The only contribution you have in my life is the pain in my heart."
Her grip tightened even more, expressing the pain that this woman etched in the original Heaven’s heart. "Five years. I was in pain for five fucking long years. All those times, I just wanted to die. I blamed myself for not being with him even in his last hours. I thought deserved to be miserable."
"Paula Shen, when Heaven lost her father, you were her only family left. Did you think I didn’t know what you were doing?" she shook her head, keeping eye contact as she expressed the pain the original Heaven couldn’t say. "I know everything, but I made myself believe there is no way my sister will do this to me. In my attempt to protect you from my own suspicion and anger, I made myself believe I was the problem! That I don’t deserve any type of happiness; that I shouldn’t try to do anything, even if that costs me my poor son."
"I did it for you, Paula!" Her voice thundered with a ridiculing laugh and a shaky voice. "It’s stupid, but I did it because you... you and I... share the same father. We are family even before Dominic or Basti."
The corner of Heaven’s eyes turned red as tears formed. "Now, you’re telling me you killed him?"
"Huh?" Paula’s lips fell open, staring at Heaven blankly. "Did I say I killed him?"
The slight confusion that suddenly appeared on Paula’s face wasn’t enough to conceal the truth hiding beneath her eyes. Paula never failed to lie to Heaven every time they were together. Thus, it was easier to spot the truth.
And this truth... broke Heaven’s heart completely.
The soul in this body might be different, but the heart... was still Heaven’s. Even so, the soul felt heartbroken for the original Heaven. Despite the awareness of Paula’s wickedness, this truth was something Hera didn’t expect.
"Paula..." Heaven’s eyes turned bloodshot as her face turned red. The veins in her neck stretched, protruding angrily as she ground her teeth to suppress the growing repugnance in her heart.
"You are so fucking low you’re not even worth killing," Heaven breathed out, pushing her away, subsequently making Paula fall back to the bed. She lowered her head, staring straight into Paula, dead in the eye.
"Paula, it’s not that I can’t kill you. I just chose not to. You... will pay for what you did to my father, Paula."
"What?"
"I’m going to make sure you will rot in jail forever and pay for your crimes," she stressed with great certainty. "Mark my word."
After saying her piece, she pushed herself away and straightened her back. Heaven looked down at Paula for a second before turning on her heel to walk away.
Seeing that Heaven was leaving, panic swelled in Paula’s heart.
"No, Heaven!" Paula hurriedly picked herself up, rushing to Heaven to hug the latter’s leg. "Please, please, Heaven, let me explain!"
Heaven stopped in her tracks, looking down at her, who shamelessly latched onto her leg.
"Please, Heaven. It’s not what you think it was!" Paula immediately let go of Heaven’s leg, crawled in front of her, and knelt before Heaven. "Let me explain, please!"
