Chapter 312: [Bonus Chapter] You owe me your life.
Meanwhile...
"Paula..." Manager Chu gazed at Paula worriedly from the chair beside the bed. "... just what is going on with you?"
After Paula threw a huge tantrum this afternoon, she eventually calmed down. When Paula fell asleep, Manager Chu called for a trusted doctor to look after Paula. What the doctor told her was something Manager Chu didn’t expect.
"Since when have you been into illegal substances?" she whispered, eyes swirling with worry.
Paula didn’t have the best personality, and that was what Manager Chu already accepted. She had a short temper and hated when another celebrity outdid her. However, regardless of all the bad traits Paula Shen had, there was one thing Manager Chu was proud of about her.
Paula had never been into drugs.
Unlike other celebrities who indulged in things that could ruin their careers, Paula was very careful. She wouldn’t even drink to the point she would pass out, saying she didn’t want to be in a state where she would act out of control and ruin the career she painstakingly built for herself.
So, why now?
"Don’t tell me it was because of that guy?" Another whisper escaped Manager Chu’s lips, thinking that Paula drastically changed after meeting Primo.
At first, Paula kept her friendship with this guy until Manager Chu noticed how frequently she was on her phone and how she had been acting. Paula eventually came clean to Manager Chu. The latter supported it since Primo seemed like a decent guy. However, just like how quickly Paula and Primo called it official, their romance ended just as quickly.
"Mhm..."
After a prolonged silence, a weak moan pierced through the quiet air. Manager Chu stayed still, watching Paula move before the latter opened her eyes.
"Hmm?" Paula furrowed her brows, looking around, confused. When she raised her hand slightly, she noticed the IV on the back of her hand. "What..."
"You passed out and were dehydrated," Manager Chu explained, keeping it short and simple. "That’s why I called a doctor. They put you in IV, so, yeah."
"Ahh..." Paula dropped her hand, closing her eyes once more as she drew a deep breath. "What time is it?"
"It’s half-past six."
Paula slowly reopened her eyes, gazing at the ceiling. "Why are you still here, then?"
"Paula."
"Manager Chu, stop treating me like a child." Paula turned her head, casting her manager an ungrateful look. "You know how I hate it when there’s another person in the room I’m sleeping."
Manager Chu pressed her lips into a thin line, used to this type of treatment. It wasn’t like she was expecting any words of gratitude from Paula. However, considering the situation, Paula’s attitude annoyed her.
"Paula Shen, what do you think you’re doing with your life?" asked the manager sternly, earning Paula’s raised brow. "I know you’re hurt because of that jerk, but drugs? Seriously?"
"Huh?" Paula scrunched up her face, staring at her manager in mock dismay. "What nonsense got into your head now, Manager Chu?"
"You know what I am talking about, Paula." Manager Chu clicked her tongue in annoyance. "I can put up with your bitchy attitude and I will cover for you, but don’t ruin your career just for a stupid man."
The more Manager Chu spewed things, the more confused Paula was. However, instead of focusing on the topic, Paula focused more on the other parts of her manager’s remarks.
"You can put up with my bitchy attitude and will cover for me?" Paula scoffed, looking at her manager in ridicule. "Of course, Manager Chu. That’s your job. Don’t make it sound like I have to thank you for doing the basic agreement in our contract."
"You --"
"At the end of the day, because of me, you were able to get out of your shitty situation." Paula didn’t give Manager Chu a chance to speak. "You paid all your debts because of my connections. Even when I don’t like it, I have to suck up to that Heaven Liu just to keep my connection with Dominic Zhu. Don’t forget how you treated me before, Manager Chu."
Her eyes gleamed with deep hatred upon recalling something in the past. "It’s not that I can’t replace you, Manager Chu. You know, for a fact, many managers will want to manage me, but do you know why I kept you around?" The corner of her mouth hooked up into a sinister smirk.
"It’s because it’s fun making fun of you. I know you’d do everything for money; you would even lick my feet if I am just willing to hand down a few hundred thousand," she continued in mockery, making Manager Chu ball her hands into a tight fist. "The next time you open your mouth and speak as if I owe my career to you, I will not let it slide."
"You owe me your life," added Paula with a hiss. "Don’t forget how you urged me and tried to pimp me in the past. I will never forgive you for that, never. Don’t forget your place again."
Manager Chu’s fist trembled in anger, but in the end, he couldn’t say anything. Harsh as they sound, what Paula said were facts. However, Paula should know how hard it was to be in such a competitive industry. Both of them were desperate and Paula wanted to stop asking for Heaven’s help, leading them to that sort of situation.
"I was just worried." Manager Chu let out a deep exhale, backing down as she realized it was futile. She couldn’t anger Paula, or the latter could just fire her out. She wasn’t done milking her, after all.
"No need." Paula moved back, resting her back against the headboard. "Leave me alone. There’s no need to keep me company. I’d rather be alone."
Manager Chu stared at Paula’s side profile, studying the latter. When she was certain Paula was back to her usual self, Manager Chu picked up her bag from the side of the chair she was sitting on.
"Fine," she said, dragging herself up from her seat. "I already cooked something. Just reheat it."
Manager Chu left her notes as she prepared to leave, but just before she could, Paula spoke.
"Before you leave..." Manager Chu looked back at Paula, only to see her stretching her neck. "... prepare me some tea. My head hurts a bit."
Manager Chu’s expression died. After saying all those hurtful stuff, Paula had the gall to ask her to make her tea.
"Bitch," murmured Manager Chu, but in the end, she still made Paula tea, spitting on it as a way to get back at her.
