Chapter 218: [Bonus Chapter]A life of a drifter
"Uncle, why are you so huge?"
"Uncle, why is your name so hard to pronounce?"
"Belbald. Belwald."
"Mommy, look! It looks like Uncle Berwald! Ah hah! I know what to call Uncle! Bear!"
"Bear!"
"Uncle Bear! Hello~!"
"Bear... I killed him and I don’t know what to feel about it."
"Bear, live for me."
Standing in front of a tomb under a willow tree, Bear slowly closed his eyes as he drew a deep breath. Thinking about Hera, he couldn’t help but remember how innocent she was. She used to have a hard time calling his name, coming up with an easier way during that time her parents took her to a zoo.
Since then, Hera called him Bear until everyone in the organization called him the same. He looked like one, after all. With his humongous physique and terrifying strength, that alias wasn’t so bad.
However, the name Hera used to call him sounded different throughout the years. From her bubbly voice calling his name to a more lifeless one. He could vividly remember how her voice sounded the first time she took a person’s life.
’You never called my name with such energy since then,’ he thought, staring at the gravestone before him. There was a bouquet on the bottom; the one he bought for her.
"Boss, I’m here." His eyes softened, reading the name Hera [motherfucking] Cruel engraved on it. "I haven’t visited you for a long time. I know I’m a bit early this year, but I don’t want to see those guys."
The corner of his lips curled up, squatting down until he was sitting beside her grave. He reached for the bottle of beer on the side, opened it using his teeth, and then placed it beside the bouquet. He opened another one for himself.
"Cheers," he said gently, clicking the bottle against the other one. Bear chugged half of the beer as if it was water, hissing in satisfaction afterward.
"Five years." Bear cleared his throat, inhaling deeply. "Five years without you is... a roller coaster. I’m not fond of rollercoasters."
His eyes fell on her name and smiled subtly. "How about you, Boss? How was Hell? I bet you’re reigning over there as well." He chuckled at the thought.
Hera was someone he looked up to. Even though he watched her grow up, Hera was someone even the most indecent rogue like Moose would respect.
"To be honest, I didn’t want to go here anymore," he confessed, keeping his eyes on her gravestone. "I wanted to move forward, just as you wish. That is why I went out of the country to look for a job. I found a few. Do you want to hear them?"
Bear straightened his back, looking up. "I first got a job in the White House as a bodyguard and then I got bored. So I thought I should join the airforce. I earned a good rank and was friends with the general."
Bear summarized his life for the past year as Bear Cruel; a life of a drifter. When he set his eyes back to the gravestone, he imagined her sitting there, listening. His eyes softened, staring at her slight smile with intrigue in her eyes.
"And then... I found this job," he added under his breath. "The General thought it was a waste for me to retire for no reason. So, he recommended me to this man where I met someone."
"That someone... is the reason I came running back here," he continued in the same quiet tone. "Her name was Heaven Liu; I know you’d find this insulting, but she reminded me of you. At first, I thought it was because it had been a while since I last visited you and I missed you. But..."
Bear took a deliberate pause as he recalled his time as Heaven Liu’s bodyguard. He convinced himself and let her actions slide, telling himself it was nothing. That Heaven Liu just had a side of her that only Bear knew.
But that night... was different.
Heaven Liu scared him out of his wits.
The moment Bear saw those rogues, and how they were beaten, even Moose was speechless. Of course, they knew beating up someone would be a gruesome sight to behold. However, how they were beaten was what surprised the two of them.
Bear and Moose had been in the underground for so long. They worked under Hera from the moment of her reign until she took her last breath. With those conditions, they could pretty much detect how fatal a beating was.
Those rogues were beaten with precision. They weren’t just beaten roughly, but the person who assaulted them knew exactly how to hurt them without killing them. Despite the countless broken bones, those weren’t enough to kill them. Although if left unattended, they would eventually die from those injuries.
"That’s how you usually do it," he whispered, snapping his eyes back to the headstone. "I remember how you studied human anatomy just so you can punish your mother’s murderer’s accomplice. You didn’t want to kill him instantly. That’s your reason."
Hera Cruel.
Oh, how her family name suited her and her cruel ways.
"Not only did she resemble your wickedness and cruelty, but she also concocts plans like how you’d do it. I know making strategies is normal, but she was so precise that she considers even the aftermath. Just like you," Bear huffed, gulping the building tension in his throat. "But do you know what quality she had that reminds me of you the most?"
He ran his tongue across his inner cheek, gazing down at the bottle of beer in his hand. "She... also makes me want to run away."
A bitter smile turned up on his face, lifting his gaze to her gravestone once again. Slowly, Hera’s mirage slowly formed, staring at him with slight amusement.
"This may be the last time I’d be here. Hopefully." His smile turned peaceful. "I came because I already decided."
"I can’t let you go." Bear took a deep breath as he huffed his next words. "I decided to follow your ghost. I’m sorry, Boss, for failing you. My life was already ruined and living a menial life, just as you wished, is impossible. I was barely drifting for the past five years."
"Heaven Liu is my last salvation." — if he let go easily this time, he might just end up following Hera, Felice, and Vicenzo to eternal damnation.
Her mirage stared back at him until the corner of her lips curled up approvingly.
