Chapter 147: Habits
Chapter 147: Habits
There was no denying Heaven felt this surge of relief upon digging deeper into Andrew Song’s life. For her, getting his real name was the most troublesome task. However, everything after that was easy with the Devil’s Eye still in her possession.
After hours of research and investigation, Heaven was ninety-eight percent sure Andrew Song, now Andrea Ng, was working alone. The other two percent originated from the fact there was always a little possibility. But with such odds, Heaven wanted to believe this was simply a desperate act of revenge.
"You have a bounty on your head. Be grateful I am not the one who will personally cut you."
After saying her piece, Heaven walked away without even looking back. There were countless ways to dispose of Andrea’s body and it wasn’t a lie Andrea must be grateful. Letting Heaven get dirty would be something even the most ruthless people in the underground wouldn’t wish.
Heaven closed the cellar securely, making sure it was locked. Lucky for her, there was no one scheduled to clean the cellar today. Thus, Heaven had an entire day to settle things before someone discover Andrea in the underground cellar.
’I guess heaven is still on my side,’ she thought, ironically since what she was doing concerned another person’s life. ’Not only this person showed up the night before Basti would go back to school, but also, the next day this place would be vacant.’
Her eyes glinted as she snapped her eyes up at the door. ’Hah... who am I kidding? This wasn’t luck, but the credits go to that person. Andrea just probably didn’t want anyone to find my dead body if she succeeded so she could buy herself some time.’
That must be it.
Unfortunately for Andrea, her plans backfired because it wasn’t Heaven’s body that was being hidden in this underground cellar, but Andrea’s. The only difference was that Andrea was still alive compared to Heaven’s fate if the former succeeded.
’I only have today to settle this matter once and for all.’ Heaven took a deep breath before she let go of the handle, turning on her heel to leave the area. But just as she turned, her entire body froze at the person standing meters from her.
Bear.
Heaven gulped, wondering if she ever gulped this loud in her life before. Her eyes went from up and down, studying Bear, who seemed to be on his way somewhere. From the distance between them, Heaven was certain Bear had just got here.
"Are you following me?" asked Heaven, maintaining an unfazed countenance.
Bear studied his boss’s wife for a moment. This was the first time she directly talked to him after getting hired three days ago. He quickly glanced at the door beside her and then set his eyes back to Heaven.
"I was told to check this wing because some maids were complaining about missing harvest in the greenhouse," he explained monotonously, keeping his answer direct and honest. "Also, the wine cellar to check if there were any unwanted pests since it’s the same area as the greenhouse."
There sure was a pest in the wine cellar and Bear didn’t need to check every corner to find it.
Heaven held her breath for a moment, rocking her head in understanding. "I see. There’s no need to check the wine cellar. I just came there and I can assure you there’s nothing like that. Just check the Greenhouse — better yet, let me come with you."
"Madam, I didn’t want to step out of my bounds –"
"Those who say that always end up stepping out of their bounds." Heaven cut him off mid-sentence, knowing this man would argue about going into the cellar. "If I were you, hold that tongue for your sake. My husband placed you under my orders; therefore, my words must be your bible. What I said wasn’t an offer or a request, it’s an order — treat this as an opportunity to earn some brownie points."
Surprised peeked into his pair of silver eyes, staring at his boss’s wife almost blankly. He didn’t expect her to cut him off mid-sentence, only to spew a bunch of threats disguised as opportunities. Ever since Bear was hired three days ago, he didn’t get a chance to have a proper conversation with Heaven. Not that he expected anything.
Bear was hired to be Dominic’s wife’s bodyguard. He only had two tasks: one was to protect Heaven and second, to keep an eye on the pests who would attempt to approach his wife. It was quite petty, to be honest, but a job was a job. Moreover, even though Dominic was his employer, Heaven was still his boss, since he would be receiving orders from her.
"If that is now clear, shall we go?" Heaven sported a short smile, making it appear she was exercising her power. That would be better than letting him go inside the wine cellar.
How troublesome.
"Yes." Bear didn’t argue as he lowered his head. When he raised his head, Heaven smirked slightly before turning around.
’She smells wine,’he thought, keeping his eyes on her back as she led him to the greenhouse. He glanced at the door leading to the underground cellar. ’She’s been here twice today. Is she trying to hide that she was chugging down wines down there?’
Bear didn’t think much about it, following Heaven’s trail while maintaining a safe distance from her. He studied her back quietly, gazing down at Heaven’s feet as she walked.
’She... doesn’t make a sound.’He lifted his gaze to her back, intrigued by the little details only a person like him would notice. ’Is it because she’s thin? That must be — it should be the case.’
Bear didn’t want to get ahead of himself and mistake this tiny detail as a habit. After all, the best assassins he knew had very light footsteps. This must be a coincidence, considering Heaven was quite thin and he could tell that beneath that skin weren’t trained muscles.
However, just as he convinced himself, he noticed how Heaven’s left hand stayed still with her fingers slightly crooked as if a habit of holding something as she walked. He couldn’t help but envision a particular rifle within her loosed grip — it reminded him of someone he knew very well.
’I must be out of my mind.’A deep sigh escaped his nostrils as he closed his eyes for a moment. ’I probably missed her, considering my current boss is a woman.’
While Bear got distracted with his thoughts, Heaven couldn’t help but sigh in relief.
’Fortunately, I chugged down half a bottle of wine while waiting for that person to wake up,’ she thought, knowing Bear got a whiff of her breath. ’It’s better for him to think I’m keeping my drinking a secret than to look suspicious about why I don’t want him inside the cellar. Good grief. Why is this person hired at the worst possible time?’
Little did she know, there were more things she should feel lucky about. After all, Bear had noticed some habits of hers that Heaven didn’t even notice she was still doing in this life. And because of that, it diverted his attention.
