Chapter 1147: One slip up
Chapter 1147: One slip up
Five Secret Family.
Hera once heard about this legendary family as a kid. Back then, Vicenzo, her father, found his interest in this secret society that the Five Secret Family was leading. Vincenzo’s reasons when she asked why, were simply to sate his curiosity.
But it seemed her father wasn’t simply sating his curiosity.
Old Madam Zhu didn’t know too much about the Five Secret Family besides the crumbs Felice told her. According to her, these Five Secret Families were so powerful they had control in many regions of the world. They could incite war and put the whole world in chaos with the flick of their hands. They could even kill a country’s economy if they so pleased.
Just that alone was enough to bring fear to anyone. Hence, the many big nations kept their existence a secret. The mere idea in fiction was enough to make people wonder and tremble in fear, but if people knew this was actually the reality, it could mean a lot of things.
"Even at this age, they hold control over many regions," Old Madam Zhu continued, eyes cast down. "I heard they were cruel if they wanted to be. It’s the reason that until now, they have such power over the world. Because once they find out that anyone is having second thoughts about them, they would die even before they open their mouths."
Hera’s face turned sour, massaging her temple as she absorbed this newfound information. She considered many things except this one. She should’ve known there was a reason her mother wanted to talk to her about something before she left that night.
’She was probably going to talk about those people,’ Hera hissed as she lifted her eyes at Old Madam Zhu.
"From what I heard, your mother was supposed to marry another son from one of the families," Old Madam Zhu continued. "She didn’t detail everything, but that is one of the reasons she ran away. She didn’t want them controlling her life anymore. Quite the irony when she ended up becoming an agent."
"Do you know that my mother was set to die once she finished her mission of silencing Vicenzo Cruel?"
"I heard." Old Madam Zhu nodded. "That is why I called it the irony. All your mother ever wanted was to break free from the leash the Oxley family put on her, but she ended up being a government dog. Perhaps it was her way of rebelling against her family. In my eyes, it’s akin to saying, ’I can do what you want me to do, just not under your orders.’ Or perhaps, I simply put some dignity in it and Felice simply chose to become an agent because that’s where she’s good at and it’s the only thing she knew."
Old Madam Zhu’s eyes softened as she unknowingly smiled. "Either way, she once told me if she didn’t become a government dog, she wouldn’t meet Vicenzo and have you."
Hera ground her teeth mildly as she balled her hands into a tight fist. She could just tell Old Madam Zhu that it wasn’t her fault and that her mother was too proud she forgot who she was dealing with. However, she couldn’t say it because she knew if the situation was reversed, Felice wouldn’t call Old Madam Zhu. Felice wouldn’t listen even if Old Madam Zhu begged her. Instead, Felice would take the threat as a personal attack and retaliate spectacularly.
"All her life..." Hera cocked her head back until the back of her head was resting on the chair she was sitting on. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "All her life, she did everything with perfection. She molded the Reapers into sophistication, made it an elite group instead of a simple mob, and earned respect even the royal family wouldn’t argue about."
Slowly, Hera reopened her eyes and scoffed. "One slip up," she continued, running her hand through her hair, laughing. "Just one slip up, and it costs her her life."
That was the reality of their lives. Not just Vicenzo, Felice, and the Reapers, but every single person in the underground, including Hera. There was never a second chance for them. They failed one time, then they were done. Time had proven that was fate for all of them.
Primo was the perfect reminder of that. He got cocky and overly confident just because he didn’t die the first time. Where did that take him?
"How funny." Hera laughed out loud, shaking her head. "So funny."
As Hera laughed after absorbing this information, Old Madam Zhu pursed her lips. She stared at the woman worriedly. At this point, she didn’t know what to say anymore. She told Hera everything she knew about Felice and her family. It wasn’t much, and she knew it barely helped.
But...
"I’m sorry I couldn’t be much of a help," Old Madam Zhu remarked, watching Hera slowly set her eyes on her. "And thank you for listening to this old lady’s mumblings. I know it wasn’t easy for you and that you won’t forgive me for putting Felice in that car. Even so, thank you for hearing me out."
Bitterness and contempt shone in Hera’s eyes, gripping the armrest tightly. "You’re right. I won’t forgive you, not because she’s dead, but because my mother wouldn’t do that to you. She would never put you in that car, knowing you’re as good as dead if you did."
"What you did isn’t loyalty." Hera shook her head, eyes fixed on Old Madam Zhu. She took another deep and let it out. Pushing herself from the chair, she kept her attention to Old Madam Zhu.
"I won’t thank you for telling me everything I need to know," she said. "But I would appreciate it if you don’t tell anyone else about this. Especially not your grandsons. Though I’m certain you won’t, because they might truly not forgive you anymore if you did, but just in case you’re having such crazy thoughts."
After saying her piece, Hera turned around. As soon as she did, her eyes landed on the woman on the floor.
"One of my people will pick her up in a bit," she said. "Lock her up. I don’t care if she’s trained not to speak. I would love to cut her bit by bit for my own pleasure."
Old Madam Zhu stared at Hera as the latter walked toward the balcony where she came from. Before Hera could reach it, she blurted out.
"I told someone else," Old Madam Zhu confessed, making Hera freeze on the spot. "Before you came, my grandson was here. I was worried you’d attack our family. So, I told him."
Hera slowly turned her head in Old Madam Zhu’s direction. "Dominic Zhu?"
"Yes."
"What exactly did you tell him?"
"That I killed a friend. Your mother. I also told him about you. I did it with the thought you would not listen to a word I said. So, he knows who he will deal with in the future."
Hera slowly balled her hands into a tight fist while staring at Old Grandma Zhu, wide-eyed. Betraying her mother was one thing, but why... did she have to tell this truth to Dominic? At this point, Hera felt like Old Madam Zhu truly wanted to die in her hands.
’Grandma... why are you making it so hard for me to forgive you?’
