Chapter 1112: You wouldn’t have known
[Zhu Villa]
Dominic hadn’t had a wink of sleep, busy concocting his plans for the future. One of the things he was aware of was that whoever this person took an interest in him was not a simple person. A simple diversion or cheap tricks won’t work. After all, Hera’s tone was already a giveaway.
But that was just the start.
Being Hera’s ally was easy, but being her enemy? Even if it was just a fake one, blood would still spill. He knew his wife very well, and he also knew she wasn’t feared for nothing. There was a reason people tread on eggshells around her, and those she considered enemies never slept without their one eye open at night.
If Hera was wary of her enemies, that also meant her enemies were wary of her. It all boils down to who planned things better. This was no longer just a brawl, but it was also a battle of wits, strategy, and resources.
This was war.
Which was why Dominic didn’t think sleep was necessary at the moment. If he was going to be Hera’s ally and enemy at the same time, he needed a believable lie — an excuse. A lie that he also had to believe. He couldn’t fail, because if he did, Hera would die. He wasn’t scared of dying, but what terrified him was what she would do if he did.
Even so, Dominic was only human. Thus, when the light slowly shone in the window, Dominic left the study to grab a glass of coffee. Much to his surprise, when he reached the living area, he caught Axel on the couch, sleeping.
’I thought he left yesterday,’ he thought, sighing heavily as he felt guilty about how he treated him the night before. Dominic turned on his heel, approaching Axel’s vantage point.
Standing on the side of the couch, he realized Axel seemed like he just crashed. There weren’t even blankets, nor did he use the pillow.
"Did he drink?" he muttered, raising his brows when Miriam suddenly appeared in the living area. A blanket was draped over her arms, indicating she had already seen Axel before Dominic.
"Give that to me," said Dominic, stretching his arm in her direction. "You should rest more, Miriam."
Miriam offered a meek smile as she approached, handing him the blanket. "I’ve already rested, Master."
"What happened yesterday must’ve scared you," he said. "You should take a day off since Princess is looking after Miracle."
"Master, did the explosion yesterday have anything to do with you?" asked Miriam worriedly. "What happened in the inauguration, do the people who did that to you find that you weren’t in a comatose?"
Dominic didn’t answer immediately, studying the worried look on Miriam’s face. Miriam didn’t know the entire truth behind the inauguration. All she knew was that someone tried to assassinate him during his inauguration and that Dominic was simply manipulating the media.
In other words, Miriam had no idea that someone was actually fighting for his life in the intensive care unit in Dominic’s place. It was the same excuse Dominic had told his parents, so they wouldn’t be too worried.
"The cause of that explosion is a gas leak, Miriam. Do not worry. The people behind the attack during the inauguration are in custody. The authorities were simply confirming things before making it public." Dominic didn’t entirely lie. A gas leak was the cause of the explosion, according to the reports he received last night. And also, it was true the mastermind behind the attack during his inauguration was already in custody.
He smiled and nodded at her reassuringly. "Don’t worry anymore. No one’s coming at me."
"That’s good news, then," Miriam heaved a sigh of relief. "Very well. I’ll help in the kitchen."
She paused and gazed down at Axel. "The second young master has been working hard. He couldn’t even reach his room and slept in here."
"Was he drunk?"
"I don’t think so."
"Running a company takes a lot of energy. I’ll take care of him," he said and Miriam nodded.
With that being said, Miriam slowly walked away to start her day helping in the villa. Dominic, on the other hand, spread the blanket and put it over his brother. He leaned down a little, furrowing his brows as Axel didn’t smell alcohol. If anything, he gave off a faint scent of coffee.
’What was he doing all night?’he wondered, noticing the mountain of papers on the coffee table. ’Work?’
Dominic reached for the paperwork, taking the one on top. He simply skimmed through the first three pages, finding out it was about the company. Dominic didn’t think much about it and shrugged, putting the paper back on top. But just as he was about to move on and make himself a cup of coffee, a folder underneath the mountain of paperwork caught his eye.
He didn’t know why, but he suddenly felt this strong urge to check it. Following his intuition, Dominic pulled out the folder underneath the mountain of paperwork. As soon as he got it, he checked the file and furrowed his brows.
"Are we being sued?" he wondered, skimming through the content to get a grasp of the documents. "The company is being sued for... fraud?"
"We’re not."
Suddenly, Axel’s hoarse voice reached Dominic. The latter immediately shifted his eyes to Axel, only to see his partially opened eyes at him.
"Then do you have a file to counter a lawsuit about fraud?"
Axel didn’t answer immediately as he stared at his brother. If what Heaven told him last night was true, then his brother... must be in a lot of pain. Axel suddenly felt sorry for his brother as tears formed in the corner of his weary eyes.
"If you checked the papers next to that file, you’ll see a file about terrorism," said Axel quietly. "Yesterday, I went to see Sis, and she said something... unbelievable."
He paused, studying the unchanging look on Dominic’s face. "If what she said was true, then I... have to do something. I believe in her and I know she wouldn’t do all those horrible things."
"Axel." Dominic drew a deep breath, pinching the bridge of his nose. "What did Heaven tell you?"
"I’m sorry," Axel whispered, his nose flared a little as he held back his tears. "If what she said is true, then I’m sorry for not seeing your pain earlier."
Dominic looked at his little brother and sighed. He then sat on the edge of the couch, ruffling Axel’s hair.
"It’s alright," he reassured with a gentle smile. "You wouldn’t have known."
