Chapter 1081: Tiger mom
Chapter 1081: Tiger mom
"Hera, keeping me awake for days won’t make things more efficient. People need sleep, not coffee."
Elliot looked up, already slumped on the floor, as he didn’t know where to sit anymore. Books cluttered around him; he had been studying the books she had given him aside from the file she told him to study. In the beginning, Elliot was enthusiastic, but now he could no longer feel anything but exhaustion.
The dark circles around his eyes were proof the poor man needed sleep. His usually neatly brushed hair was spiking all over the place. He hadn’t changed clothes. His overall look just seemed groggy, no doubt.
"You almost killed my old man." Hera yawned, sitting idle on the couch. "Studying hard is quite a small price to pay."
"So, this is how you’re going to torture me?" Elliot scoffed calmly in disbelief. "This is new. I never heard someone getting tortured by studying."
"Just think, you have a Tiger mom." She winked, sitting up from the couch. "Maybe that’ll make you feel better."
Elliot sighed heavily, almost on the verge of breaking down. Seeing that she got up and was leaving, he blurted out, "Where are you going?"
"Sleep." Hera looked back, yawning. "Do you think I’m a robot? I can’t stay up for days."
"What about me?" he gasped. "I’m not a robot too!"
"But you have a world to save," Hera ridiculed. "At least, without you, the Interpol is as good as dead. Sounds the same, right?"
Elliot’s jaw dropped, looking at Hera’s figure helplessly. When she shut the door, he huffed and hunched in on the floor. He lamented for a second before he straightened his back.
"I can’t do this," he shook his head, not surprised he started talking to himself due to the lack of sleep. "If she’s going to sleep, I will too!"
Elliot moved the books away from him, heaving a sigh of relief when his back landed on the floor. He took a deep breath, closing his eyes, ready to embrace the sleep every fiber of his body longed for. But unlike what he expected, Elliot couldn’t fall asleep.
The lines in between his brows deepened and the corner of his mouth continued to curve down. In the end, he had to get up and sighed deeply. All he felt was his growing irritation instead of sleep.
"Sleep requires peace," he told himself, shaking his head, eyes on all the study material on the floor. "Why does she want me to read them?"
Elliot reached out for a book, reading the cover. It was a medical book which didn’t interest him a bit. His job was to keep the Interpol in order, dealing with international crimes and felonies. That was what he wanted. It was a career he chose to do. Which was why he didn’t go to medical school.
"At least I know the basic and important first aid," he grumbled, flipping the pages lazily. After being overwhelmed by the words in it, he tossed it to the side and picked up the thick documents mixed in the books.
"This one is much more useful," he grumbled as the documents carried profiles. Each page was another person’s profile with their names, origins, blood type, the organization they came from, and their positions.
Elliot believed he should be studying these documents more than these other books. After all, this handful of documents was akin to treasure for him. Some names and profiles were familiar, but many of them weren’t.
"Hmm..." He flipped the pages, skimming through the documents, only to shut his eyes. Nothing was sticking to his mind. "Information just comes and goes in my head."
Another deep sigh escaped him, snapping his eyes up when he heard the door creak open. He knitted his brows, catching Hera walking back in with a mug of coffee.
"I thought you were going to sleep?" he asked out of plain curiosity, glancing at the mug in her hand. "Can’t sleep?"
"Nah, I was kidding." Hera casually sat on the couch. "I wasn’t going to sleep. I only said that to see if you’re going to cheat me."
She then raised the mug a little. "I planned to wake you up with a mug of boiling coffee."
Elliot’s face twitched. "What a maniac," he blurted out under his breath. "Why did I even get stuck with you?"
"Because you did a lousy job," she retorted, blowing the steam from her mug. "I thought you understood what I said when I visited you in your office. But obviously, you didn’t."
"I understand some of the members of the General Assembly are very well connected to the underground. That they were just as guilty as those we put behind bars," Elliot stressed. "But I didn’t expect them to... never mind."
"Sounds lousy to me." Hera shrugged. "You know that "some" members of the General Assembly aren’t as innocent and clean as they should be. What makes you think they aren’t capable of bribing your people to kill you?"
"Because... they are my people."
"And because they’re your people, you think they won’t harm you?"
"Did you?" Elliot returned with sarcasm. "Did you see Dragon betraying you? Until now, do you trust your men with your life? You’ve been gone for a long time. People change, Hera. Can you confidently say that one of them won’t turn up as an enemy?"
"No." Her answer was quick, something he didn’t expect. "I trust them with my life. However, I can’t confidently say that one of them won’t turn up as an enemy someday. If they do, then they’re dead."
"Easy for you to say, huh?"
"Dragon betrayed me because I let him, Elliot Dunkel." A subtle yet confident smile dominated her face. "I turned a blind eye to the obvious signs, hoping he would value the years we shared. But alas, I was wrong."
"He didn’t value those years, huh?"
"No. I realized there was nothing to value in the first place." She clarified. "People change, and I agree with you on that. But you and I are also people, are we not? And we also change. Maybe for the good or the worst. Just pick one and move on."
Elliot studied Hera and let out a shallow laugh. "So, you chose to be the worst, huh?"
"Maybe? Maybe not? Who knows?" Hera took a sip of coffee leisurely. "Keep reading, or do you want a sip?"
"Hera." Elliot breathed out, looking at her curiously. "Why are you doing this?"
"Hmm?"
"What will you actually get by helping me? If you want to deal with the members of the general assembly, you can do that without me. It’s not like that would surprise anyone," he explained. "You’re already a felon; a well-known one, someone even the big-time crime syndicates are wary of."
"So, I don’t get it." He added. "What’s your goal?"
Hera hummed and pondered before she smiled brightly. She gazed at him again, making his brows elevate suspiciously.
"Why are you smiling like that?" he asked nervously. "Is that smile good news or bad news?"
But Hera didn’t say anything. She just smiled and kicked the book mildly towards him.
"Keep reading. I don’t want to scare you once you find out."
Well, since she said it like that, now he was even more scared.
