Chapter 1001: You came back... again.
[Hours before Dominic’s inauguration]
"The doctors said you’re recovering really fast..." Dragon approached the corner stand, pouring himself a glass of whiskey. "... they said you’d wake up anytime soon."
A scoff slipped past his lips, picking up the glass and turning to face her bed. "It’s funny that I heard the same thing before. I still remember what I felt when they told me you would get better. I was overjoyed. But now, I only have one thing in mind."
"Will you wake up anytime soon?" he sauntered to the window and stood in front of it. "Or did you already wake up and you’re just pretending to be asleep?"
He opened the window, letting the night breeze brush past his face. The bruises on his face lightened and, based on his complexion, he was recovering from his other injuries well. Thanks to the fast technology and the drugs he had been funding even during his time in the Reapers.
It was night here but on the other side of the world where the sun was shining, a big event was about to occur.
"If you’re awake, then there’s no need for you to pretend," he added. "My plans are already in motion. Having you awake or not doesn’t make a difference. I’ll kill all of them: Dominic, Dimitri, and that bastard Leo Wu."
The corner of his lips curled up as he hissed. "Frying your brain is not an option anymore. I’ll let you remember everything. I’ll let you see the consequences of making a fool out of me." His grip on the glass tightened, and then he chugged the whiskey down in one go.
After a satisfied hiss, he turned around to look at the bed.
"Did you hear me?" he asked under his breath, grinding his teeth and before he knew it, threw the glass in her direction. The glass, however, hit the wall far away from the bed. "I said, I’m going to kill all of them!!!"
But nothing. Hera didn’t respond nor did she make the slightest movement.
"Hah..." Dragon huffed, eyes fixed on Hera. He marched to her and stopped beside the bed. "How? Are you really not awake yet? Hah. If I stab you, will you wake up? Should I do that?"
At this point, Dragon felt like losing his mind. He didn’t know what to believe anymore. Even if he already confirmed that Heaven and Hera’s souls switched, it was unbelievable. But more than that, he couldn’t accept the fact that while he spent his years looking after her body, the real Hera was out there, living life to its fullest.
While he was stuck in one place, she moved on with her life.
How could he accept that damn abomination?
"No one’s safe." He rested his hands on the mattress, bending over until his face was a palm length away from hers. "Even her kids... I’ll kill all of them. And I’ll let you and her watch."
He shook his head as he laughed through his gritted teeth. "I’ll start with Joker tonight. Don’t worry. I’ll keep his head, so you can see it when you wake up. Ram will also take down Wolf tonight, so they won’t be sad."
"Boss!"
The door suddenly flew open from the outside, making Dragon slowly raise his head. He arched a brow, pushing himself away from Hera.
"What is it?" he asked.
"There’s an intruder in the house."
"Hah." Dragon nodded as if he expected this. "Found out who it was?"
"Hunter," the man outside gulped as he recalled the other man with him. "And this guy No One."
"Just the two of them?"
"They’ve taken down the guards in the east wing."
Dragon chuckled and tugged the hem of his suit. He glanced at Hera one more time and shook his head.
"I guess Joker and Wolf wouldn’t be sad, since they will share Alexander and Hunter’s death anniversary," he snickered, marching out of the room. "Take me to them and also tell the guys to move Hera to our next location."
"Yes, sir!"
When Dragon went out, more armed men were waiting for him. They followed him, handing Dragon a rifle because the man wanted to take down those rats himself. But just as Dragon was halfway to the commotion, he stopped.
"Hah." He laughed and ran his tongue across his inner cheek. "It’s a diversion. Why would I fall for that?"
The second those words rolled out of his tongue, he turned on his heel to go back to where Hera was. Dragon might’ve been complacent before, but never again.
"Deal with those guys and deliver them to me alive. I will kill them myself."
*******
"I guess Joker and Wolf wouldn’t be sad, since they will share Alexander’s and Hunter’s death anniversary. Take me to them and also tell the guys to move Hera to our next destination."
Without wasting a second, Dragon marched outside and left the door ajar. When pure silence fell in the room, a loud creak resonated in the room. The closet slowly opened, and emerging from it was Deborah in all black. She carefully looked from her left to right, tiptoeing her way to the bed.
’She’s still unconscious,’she thought. ’Fortunately, she weighs like a feather. I can carry her down to the window...’
Deborah’s train of thought trailed off as soon as she reached the bed. Her eyes went wide and her breath hitched, seeing that Hera’s eyes were wide open.
"Hera!" she whispered and yelled, rushing to her side. "I knew it! You were awake all along, huh? Let’s go. Those guys would keep Dragon busy. We don’t have time..."
Again, Deborah trailed off upon noticing that Hera was just staring blankly at the window. However, they didn’t have plenty of time. Thus, she grabbed Hera’s shoulder and shook her.
"Hera, it’s me, Deborah! Get your senses back! We have to go!" She shook Hera with caution, not wanting to aggravate whatever injuries she had. "Hera —"
This time, Hera’s eyes moved to hers. There was no shock or surprise or even urgency in them. If anything, it seemed like her mind was just blank.
"Hera..." called Deborah under her breath. "I will have to carry you if you don’t respond, hmm? Don’t worry. I came in here with the thought of carrying you, anyway."
Just as Deborah reached for Hera’s arm, the latter suddenly grabbed her. Deborah paused, eyes shaky, as she held Hera’s eyes once again.
"You came back," Hera whispered in a coarse voice. "Again."
Deborah smiled bitterly. "I made a promise with you, didn’t I? Sorry if I made you wait."
Hera smiled subtly in return. Yet, a thin layer of tears coated her eyes and before she knew it, tears rolled down her temple.
"You did make that promise," she whispered, her heart skipping a beat and clenching. "Which also means... this is real."
What a way to wake up.
