Chapter 68: Imprisoned

This was absolutely childish. Verena couldn’t believe she was already locked up in a cage with no evidence to back up these ridiculous claims. But then again, this was the kind of power the Imperial Family wielded.

Damn these clichés...

The novel was really proving itself to be written by some angsty, fifteen-year-old with a flair for drama.

Her body, of course, betrayed her first. She had no idea how many hours had passed, but it definitely wasn’t a good sign.

The rope around her wrists was rough, and her skin was beginning to burn from the friction.

Then came the smell, damp, fetid air that reeked of human waste and decay.

It was the kind of scent that made you question your life choices.

A door creaked open at the far end of the room, followed by the dull clinking of footsteps. Torchlight filtered in, casting long shadows that seemed to stretch forever.

And there, standing in the doorway, was a tall, slim figure with a sword on his side.

"Planning to kill me?"

He grabbed her face through the bars, his grip tight enough to leave her breathless. "I know you’re the one standing in our way."

"W-Whose way?" Verena’s voice was muffled by his hand, but she wasn’t backing down.

"Evelyn’s. She barely even comes to ask me for anything anymore. She always says she can handle things herself," His tone dripped with frustration.

Nice one!

One thing she had learned in this twisted life was never to argue with a narcissist. They would never see the truth, no matter how obvious it was.

"I assure you..." she spoke slowly, her voice dripping with a mix of annoyance and amusement. "She probably just noticed how much of a burden you were to her. Trust me, she likes you more than I think you realize." [+10 Descent Points]

Norvan went silent. He stood there, his grip loosening just slightly as her words sank in. It wasn’t hard to tell.

He’d softened, just a little, when she mentioned Evelyn’s feelings for him.

That was a lie, of course.

"You—"

"Lady Verena."

A tall figure stood there, her presence undeniable. Verena didn’t need to look up to know who it was—Clarina. How could she forget that voice?

"Who are you?!" Norvan stood, his eyes narrowing.

"It’s none of your business," Clarina said coolly, drawing a sleek sword with a fluid motion.

"A woman, huh? I doubt you’d be able to handle a sword."

"You’re not as strong yourself, sir Norvan."

In an instant, she lunged, her sword flashing with lethal precision.

Norvan barely had time to react as she closed the distance, her strikes like a whirlwind.

He blocked with his sword, but the force of her blows pushed him back, his feet skidding across the cold stone floor.

"You’re... not bad," Norvan grunted, sweat beginning to form on his brow. He tried to regain his footing, but Clarina was relentless, her movements fluid, graceful, and far too quick for him to follow.

A sharp strike caught him off guard, knocking his sword from his hand and sending him stumbling backward.

His eyes widened in disbelief as he tried to regain control, but Clarina was already standing before him, her sword poised at his throat.

"Guess you underestimated me," she said, her voice as calm as ever.

Norvan could only stare, utterly overwhelmed by the speed and strength of the woman before him. "Who are you?!"

Oh damn. His ego is hurt.

Another figure stepped in, this time much smaller, wearing nothing but a thin nightgown.

Her tousled hair framed her face in an almost ethereal way.

It was Evelyn.

"Norvan, what’s the meaning of this?" Evelyn’s voice trembled.

He couldn’t believe it.

He was caught, completely off-guard. He had expected a fight, but this? This wasn’t part of the plan. And now, to make matters worse, Evelyn was standing there, clueless, the last person he wanted to see in this mess.

Clarina didn’t waste a second. She stepped between Norvan and Evelyn, her sword still drawn, the gleam of steel reflecting the torchlight.

"Run away," Clarina said, her tone sharp but strangely calm.

And like that, Evelyn snapped into action. She didn’t even look back at Norvan, but she knew exactly what she had to do.

She grabbed Verena by the arm, pulling her away from the cell, her bare feet slapping against the stone floor as they ran.

They took the winding path through the dungeons, their movements quick and agile.

They passed by sleeping guards, barely avoiding detection, with Clarina taking the lead and clearing their way, her eyes sharp and calculating.

Finally, they reached the main floor. The party was still in full swing, but the guards were everywhere. Evelyn wasted no time, shoving Verena into a nearby door.

"Evelyn, thank—" Verena’s words cut off as she was suddenly pinned against the wall.

"Hey, who was that woman?"

Wait, that was her concern right now?! Of all things?!

"I-"

"Weren’t you supposed to be the one to save me?"

"This was all part of the plan! I was only a distraction."

Evelyn’s eyes flickered with something dark. "Where’s the bite mark I gave you?"

The bite mark had been covered with layers of makeup, a subtle reminder of a past she was trying to hide. "I covered it up," she replied.

"I see... so you want to keep it hidden."

Before Verena could react, Evelyn moved swiftly, kneeling in front of her.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Verena’s voice cracked in alarm.

Evelyn didn’t answer. She leaned in, her lips brushing against the fabric of Verena’s skirt before she bit down sharply into her thigh.

Verena stifled a gasp, her body tensing from the pain.

"There," she said. "Now you won’t have to hide it anymore."

For some reason, something about Evelyn felt a little off.

Her voice had this edge of seriousness that was completely out of place.

Maybe she’d been lonely and scared during her time in the abduction, and when her knight didn’t come charging to the rescue, she probably felt like the world had betrayed her.

What happened?
