Chapter 686: A World Beyond Imagination

Chapter 686: A World Beyond Imagination

Adam’s question forced William out of his sorrow. He had calmed down and soothed the children enough that they were now sniffing quietly instead of bawling their eyes out. It was indeed time to make his mark on this new land.

He pulled back from the warm hug he had given the kids, feeling their small hands clutch his sleeves and pants. Then, he finally observed the surroundings he had ignored. And he almost choked at what he saw.

Between the palace broader than the mountain he had lived in, the sprawling gardens filled with swaying rice plants, dew-covered vegetables, and rare qi herbs, he didn’t know if his eyes fed him the truth or if Adam had shoved him into an illusion or a dream world.

He stumbled to the edges of the central island, his breath catching in his throat. These were just the tip of the iceberg.

Down below, he saw lush canopies, transparent rivers, and sparkling lakes. He heard the distant growls of the magical beasts populating them. His eyes widened when he saw the centipede that had come with him dig a tunnel through the mountain. This fellow knew his priorities and hadn’t wasted a single second.

"A blessed land?" he muttered, the words barely coming out of his dry throat. "This is more than that..."

But amidst the natural landscape, tall structures drew his attention. They seemed out of place in the cultivator setting. He would have understood if they were at least shaped like mage towers or followed the architecture Pablo had brought with him from the archipelago. But they seemed nothing of the sort.

He pointed in their direction, about to ask what they were. However, Misha moved before him and cut him off.

"Forget about Adam and his boring palace." A radiant smile curved her lips. "I’m delighted to guide my first guests into my city. Follow me!"

She raised her fist, turned toward the edge of the flying island, and did the unthinkable to William. She leapt down as if it was natural.

"Wait!" His voice cracked in horror as he watched her figure dive.

There were at least a few, perhaps even a dozen kilometers, between the island and the ground. Worse, they were right above the mountainous region connected by ancient red bridges. Nothing would soften her fall. She would die.

He bit his lips, blood draining from his pale face.

Adam rolled his eyes behind him. "What are you afraid of? Just watch."

Unconvinced by his words but unable to avert his gaze, William watched yet another surreal phenomenon unfold. And this time, it left him utterly confused.

Before his very eyes and without the slightest fluctuation in mana, golden wings sprouted from Misha’s back like grass. She glided with the wind, landing on firm ground softly before her cheerful voice echoed.

"What are you waiting for? Follow me!"

"Follow? Ahem..." He coughed, his eyes slipping to Adam, pleading for a solution. After all, his poison element didn’t allow him to fly.

Adam snapped his fingers, sighing. "You have much to learn, William, especially if you want to teach the kids. Your current capabilities are... insufficient."

Mana wrapped around the old man, forming a solid bubble before a thick chain linked it to Adam’s palm.

"That’s neutral mana, meaning I don’t need any element to make you hover, construct mana weapons, or tools. Don’t worry, though. Your time as a thirsty mage lost in a desert of ignorance has come to an end."

He leapt down, dragging William and the children with the chains as wind whipped his hair. Mid-fall, he channeled his mana inside his own body. Instantly, his heavy bones and dense muscles became lighter. Like a feather, he drifted down, his feet meeting the ground in a soft display of control.

Then, he dismissed the bubble around the old archmage and grinned. "You’ll learn to do that soon enough. But let’s not make Misha wait, or we’ll hear about it for a while."

Without looking back, he dragged the children toward the city, and William followed, lost in thought.

He didn’t mind it. Rather, he knew William would need time after they smashed his worldviews into pieces. Honestly, he was even surprised by how the archmage tried to adapt despite his advanced age. How old was he, even?

He glanced back and asked.

William hesitated for a second, sighing. "I’m soon a hundred and forty-seven..." A complicated expression twisted his features. "And you two? Did you find a way to extend your lives? I’m sorry, but I have trouble believing you’re teenagers."

"Me?" Amused by the question, Adam pointed at his face. "My body is sixteen years old. My mind is thirty-one, though." He waved his hand dismissively. "A sad story about being a ghost for fifteen years, not that it matters. Misha is..."

Misha crossed her arms over her chest, clicking her tongue, her intense glare silencing him. "I’m sixteen, and in ten years, I’ll still be sixteen, understood?"

"I would have at least added nine..."

Eyes narrowed into slits and voice hardening, Misha cut Adam’s playful comment off. "I asked if you understood."

Adam raised his hands in surrender, chuckling. "Yes, ma’am. Still sixteen even in a hundred years."

"Good." She nodded, leading the way out of the mountainous region.

Meanwhile, William shuddered at their innocent banter. He had expected to hear indecent ages like those old cultivation monsters who acted youthful when they were several hundreds, if not millennia, years old. But merely thirty-one? Adam was almost five times younger than him!

And those fifteen years as a ghost were even more bewildering. How did he escape purification for so long when none could survive in the cultivation realm?

Although he didn’t know much about the western archipelago, there was something every exiled mage knew—they hated ghosts with a vengeance. No matter where or how one appeared, they would send archmages and magi to eradicate it. Most believed they just wanted to uphold the cycle of life. But he suspected there was something more to it. Perhaps they viewed them like demons?

He didn’t know, but his pondering session came to an abrupt halt when pavement replaced soil, and Misha chirped.

"Welcome to my city: Voltia’s haven!"

His eyes instantly widened in shock now that he saw it up close. Was this even a city?
