Chapter 49: Early Morning Accident
"Ring ring ring!"
Early in the morning, Wang Longhu was woken up by a hurried phone call.
Having barely fallen asleep at dawn, Wang Longhu opened his eyes feeling somewhat irritated, glancing at the phone screen to see he had only slept for three hours.
"Who is it?" Wang Longhu grumbled impatiently, answering the call with his eyes closed again.
"Longhu! Are you free now? I have something I need your help with."
A familiar voice sounded, and Wang Longhu furrowed his brows, thinking carefully before he recognized that it was actually Lin Haitao.
"What’s up, Haitao." Wang Longhu quickly sat up, yawned, and asked.
He knew Lin Haitao’s personality well; if it weren’t for a major, unsolvable problem, he definitely wouldn’t be calling so early for help.
"Longhu, Ye Yuanpei has been kidnapped. I suspect it’s by someone from the underworld. Can you help rescue him?" Lin Haitao’s voice trembled a bit from the other end, sounding quite frightened.
Hearing this, Wang Longhu was immediately alert.
"Ye Yuanpei’s been kidnapped? How can something like this still happen these days? Who grabbed him? Did you call the police?"
"It’s hard to explain over the phone. You’d better come over, and I’ll tell you in person."
"Okay." Wang Longhu agreed, quickly hanging up the phone and getting out of bed to get dressed and wash up.
"How could such a thing happen?" After feeding the dogs in the yard, Wang Longhu ran to the back of the mountain, swiftly descending by stepping across treetops with nimble Lightweight Skill.
The shortest distance between two points is a straight line; going straight down the mountain is much more efficient than running down the mountain path.
According to his daily plan, Wang Longhu would usually run into the city, but with Ye Yuanpei in trouble, there was no time to waste, so he called a ride using his phone to get to the destination.
...
Bam!
Knocking on the door of Ye Yuanpei and Lin Haitao’s residence, the door opened to reveal Lin Haitao with a cigarette dangling from his mouth, looking haggard and anxious in Wang Longhu’s eyes.
"Stop smoking; put it out. Quickly tell me what’s going on." Wang Longhu entered the house and promptly asked.
"Last night, after Ye Yuanpei and I went out for grilled fish, a van came and took him away just as we got to the street. I thought he would be returned by morning, but there’s been no news, and I can’t reach him by phone." Lin Haitao pressed the cigarette into the ashtray, scratching his hair like a bird’s nest: "It looks like this is more complicated than we initially thought."
"Then why didn’t you call the police? And why did you think Ye Yuanpei would be released by those who took him this morning?" Wang Longhu pulled over a chair and sat solemnly in front of Lin Haitao to ask.
"Here’s the situation: Ye Yuanpei has a cousin, Jin Zhihao, who used to work as a surveyor at an insurance company. He diligently saved over two hundred thousand yuan, but one new year, while bored at home,
he was introduced to online gambling by some friends. Not only did he lose all his savings, but he also ended up with over a million yuan in debt, including an eighty-thousand yuan loan from Ye Yuanpei, effectively making him his cousin’s largest creditor."
Wang Longhu was shocked and exclaimed, "Lend someone eighty thousand? What did Ah Pei do before; how does he have so much money?"
Lin Haitao shook his head: "It’s not his money; he somehow got his hands on a credit card with an eighty-thousand yuan limit, which he loaned out. The bank that issued it was also careless to allow someone just a year out of graduation that much credit."
"It’s truly absurd," Wang Longhu nodded. "But how does all this relate to Ye Yuanpei being taken?"
"Jin Zhihao, having so much debt, didn’t bother even looking for jobs paying over ten thousand monthly and just stayed at home hiding. Beyond the eighty thousand, some debt was from loan sharks. Of course, he had to repay them somehow, and without a legitimate source of income,
he somehow acquired a network betting agent’s position, becoming a downline for the bigger bookmaker. During events like the European Cup, World Cup, Ligue 1, Premier League, and NBA, he ran some online betting schemes."
"Wow." Wang Longhu was stunned. He never expected such outrageous stories to occur in small Dong County.
This scenario seemed straight out of a movie but was happening right around him.
"But lately, luck has been bad; the ring Jin Zhihao worked for was busted, causing customers not to retrieve their bets, and he foolishly embezzled the bookmaker’s funds. Now, the bookmaker probably had him taken away for some ’education,’
Ye Yuanpei, with his excessive sense of loyalty and naivety, upon learning about Jin Zhihao’s situation, offered to help broker a repayment. I suspect those who took him last night were there to meet regarding the repayment,
but the problem is Ye Yuanpei hasn’t returned today. Even if negotiations failed, he should’ve been released to let us know he’s safe. I’m worried he might’ve run into trouble."
Lin Haitao held his head, feeling regretful, and began speaking incoherently, though Wang Longhu comprehended the essence of the story.
"Your experience is extraordinary, more bizarre than anything I’ve encountered hustling in Hang City; it’s book-worthy," Wang Longhu rubbed his throbbing temples, organizing his thoughts.
"The problem now is getting Ye Yuanpei out. If the police get involved, Ye Yuanpei and his cousin will surely be jailed, which is why I thought of asking for your help," Lin Haitao said, looking up.
"Me? How do you expect me to help? If there’s something I can do, I’ll try my best."
"Longhu, I saw you fight before; you’re not an amateur. Did you train in Hang City these past few years? I just want to know: how many people can you take on at once? I want to join you in rescuing Ye Yuanpei."
Lin Haitao looked serious, appearing not to be joking.
Staring into his eyes, Wang Longhu nearly chuckled aloud.
Fortunately, Lin Haitao sought his aid; persuading another martial artist could be futile.
With Wang Longhu’s current Xingyi Boxing prowess, bolstered by a polished 2.00 physique, battling twenty men sans firearms posed no issue.
Thus, Lin Haitao’s proposition seemed viable to him.
"Your idea is feasible, but do you know where they are? We need a target first," Wang Longhu queried.
"I can make a call. If I reach them and offer repayment, they’ll certainly send someone to fetch us. But rescuing him depends on your skills when we’re there."
Pondering briefly, Wang Longhu nodded: "Don’t worry; it’s on me. I’ll ensure your safety if it’s under ten people."
"That ferocious? Fantastic, I’ll call them right now," Lin Haitao exclaimed, picking up his phone to make contact.
With nothing to do, Wang Longhu scratched a nearby cat, knowing that as a Martial Artist familiar with the threshold of Dark Force, confrontations with ordinary people were no longer a concern.
