Chapter 36: Secret in the Mountains
"This is the cave?"
"Yes, we marked it when we left. This is the one."
The young man pointed to a cross-shaped indent next to the entrance and said with certainty.
Looking at the slanted entrance, Wang Longhu squatted down and peered inside for a moment, frowning seriously.
No one knows how deep the cave is or what lies below. If Zhou Juanjie fell and was injured, he could easily suffer an accident due to excessive bleeding.
"You stay here and keep watch. I’ll go down and take a look." Wang Longhu wasted no time, tying a rope he brought around his waist and securing the other end to a nearby tree trunk, preparing to slide down into the cave.
"You’re going down?" Hearing Wang Longhu’s bold declaration, the young man was startled.
Even as Zhou Juanjie’s good friend, he didn’t dare to do so much to save someone, yet Wang Longhu, a complete stranger, was willing to make such a sacrifice.
Keep in mind that once you enter the cave, the dangers are unpredictable, and no one can say what might happen next. Such behavior is truly noble.
"Saving someone is urgent. You help me watch the rope. If I find him, I’ll need you to pull him up."
"Okay, okay. My name is Zheng Dongliang. My family is in the herbal medicine business. If you ever need anything, you can come to me. I acknowledge you as a friend, so righteous you are." The young man quickly said, patting his chest.
"Use your phone to light the way for me." Wang Longhu nodded, took Zheng Dongliang’s phone, sat at the cave entrance, and slowly slid down into the depths.
The inside of the cave was very rugged, only allowing one person to pass at a time, and one couldn’t even straighten up. As he descended another four to five meters, the surroundings became extremely dark, giving an unsettling psychological pressure.
Wang Longhu used the phone to light the way below, but he still couldn’t see the bottom.
It’s hard to imagine who might have excavated such a tunnel in this mountain, and for what purpose.
Hiss—hiss!
Suddenly, a strange sound came from a recessed area on the left.
Wang Longhu pointed the light over, instantly causing his hair to stand on end. He saw two black snakes coiled up in the niche, rising and flicking their tongues at him.
Having grown up in the city, Wang Longhu had never seen anything like this. He quickly increased his sliding speed, hurrying away from the snakes’ dwelling.
Snakes, being cold-blooded creatures, won’t attack preemptively when not hunting. As long as you don’t make any moves, they won’t strike first.
After sliding down roughly another seven to eight meters, Wang Longhu finally saw the bottom.
It was an irregular grotto filled with rubble and some remnants of wooden beams. Below the entrance, a figure lay prone and unconscious.
It was likely Zhou Juanjie.
Wang Longhu jumped out of the entrance, approached Zhou Juanjie, and checked his breathing—he was still alive.
However, under the light, it was clear that he must have hit a rock when he fell, as his head was bleeding.
"These wealthy types have nothing better to do. Instead of getting a good night’s sleep, they roam the mountains on a whim." Wang Longhu said helplessly, carrying Zhou Juanjie on his back.
The entrance width wasn’t enough for Wang Longhu to carry Zhou Juanjie out the same way he came, and tying the rope around Zhou Juanjie to pull him up wasn’t a realistic option either.
There’s an old saying, ’dead weight is way heavier’, which doesn’t refer to a person’s actual weight, but suggests that when a person can’t move, they seem heavier than when conscious.
A girl weighing 100 pounds could effectively feel like she weighs 150 pounds.
Scanning the surroundings, in one corner of the grotto, he noticed an ajar wooden door. Covered with thick, cocoon-like spider webs, it hadn’t been touched in ages, leaving one to wonder where it might lead.
Untying the rope from his waist, Wang Longhu covered his mouth and nose, went over, and kicked the door open, revealing a straight passage, with brickwork at both ends, forming an archway.
"Where does this lead?" Wang Longhu tore some fabric from Zhou Juanjie’s clothing to bandage his head wound and boldly stepped into the passage.
As the passage hadn’t been ventilated in a long time, it was filled with an acrid, dusty smell. Wang Longhu moved briskly and soon reached the end.
Before him was a wall completely built with blue bricks, with no cement in the gaps. Wang Longhu tapped it, confirming the wall wasn’t solid, and then kicked it powerfully.
The wall crumbled, revealing the moonlit mountain scenery beyond.
Standing at the cave entrance looking down, there was a densely vegetated hillside, with distant mountains veiled in mist. Between the mountains lay a vast, endless lake, the Changkeng Reservoir.
"Damn, how could there be a hidden tunnel in this mountain!" exclaimed Wang Longhu, carrying Zhou Juanjie, feeling utterly astonished.
From childhood to now, he had frequently returned to his grandmother’s home atop Changkeng, never imagining such a secret hidden within the mountain. It’s truly sensational.
It felt like a fundamental shift in his worldview.
Glancing around, the cave wasn’t far from the mountain summit above, and the slope wasn’t too steep, a climbable distance.
But with Zhou Juanjie unconscious on his back, the difficulty increased. A misstep during the climb could lead to a fatal fall for both.
"Neither heaven nor earth can be reached from here, we’ll have to tough it out." Wang Longhu glanced at the unconscious Zhou Juanjie, and with no room for hesitation, he started climbing uphill.
Before, Wang Longhu wouldn’t manage carrying someone uphill, but now it seemed different; he felt an endless vigor in him, easily carrying Zhou Juanjie to the summit.
Walking down the hill, he soon encountered Zheng Dongliang still waiting beside the cave entrance.
Seeing Wang Longhu suddenly appear, Zheng Dongliang almost fainted from shock.
"It’s me, don’t be afraid." Wang Longhu explained.
"H-how did you come down from above, weren’t you..." Zheng Dongliang looked incredulously between the cave entrance and Wang Longhu, as if seeing a ghost.
"Long story. Let’s head back. Your friend is injured; if not taken to a hospital quickly, it’ll be troublesome. Take me to your guest house, get him to the hospital right away." Wang Longhu called out, leading Zheng Dongliang quickly downhill, running back to their temporary guest house.
By now, Zheng Dongliang’s friends at the guest house were like ants on a hot pan, and when they saw Wang Longhu enter with the unconscious Zhou Juanjie, they quickly gathered around.
"Zhou Juanjie! Is he alright?"
"Oh no! Zhou Juanjie’s head is bleeding badly."
"No time to ask, hurry, get Zhou Juanjie to the hospital." urged Zheng Dongliang, who had just arrived.
The group fetched car keys, loaded Zhou Juanjie into the car, and promptly drove off, leaving the guest house in a hurry.
