Chapter 83: Chapter 79 Love Letter

Ever since the mid-term exams, the competition within each class of the second year of high school has become extremely intense.

A few homeroom teachers gathered together, discussing how nowadays students face too much learning pressure. They agreed that students should have time to breathe and that too much homework should not be assigned.

Yet, they flipped through textbooks searching for various complex problems to explain, before assigning piles of test papers as homework.

No teacher spared any student, including those who had to stay late for physics classes.

Every day when the class monitor collected homework, the class would reverberate with the agonizing cries of students who hadn’t finished their assignments; this had almost become the norm.

Xie Ying’an usually failed to submit his homework nine out of ten times before he became desk mates with Qingran.

But since he started sitting with Qingran, he actually got used to doing homework.

Even Qingran found it strange. Previously, many undisciplined students were easily misled by Xie Ying’an’s pace. They thought that if the top student didn’t do the homework, it would be fine for them not to do it either.

But when the exams came around, the top student was still steadily the first in the grade, while their own grades had slipped dramatically.

The class monitor walked over to their side again. Qingran handed in her homework, and Xie Ying’an also submitted his to the class monitor.

This was already the second month that Xie Ying’an had conscientiously handed in his homework, making the class monitor pick up their dropped jaw with astonishment as they walked away with the homework.

Qingran was a bit puzzled as she glanced at Xie Ying’an.

Xie Ying’an was already looking at her.

Their eyes met. From the front, the tear mole at the corner of Xie Ying’an’s eyes looked devilishly red, causing Qingran to take a couple more glimpses.

Xie Ying’an dropped his gaze, allowing her to observe him.

A blush quickly spread over the young man’s fairly pale skin. Within a few seconds, as if he couldn’t handle it, he feigned a cough and asked, "What’s wrong?"

Qingran turned her gaze away, pulling out the practice book she had worked on after touching him yesterday, "Have you finished your homework? Can you help me check the answers?"

Xie Ying’an was slightly startled, a hint of disappointment crossing his eyes. He nodded and took the practice book from Qingran’s hands.

Qingran had purposely folded the corner where she worked yesterday. It wasn’t that she intended to bother Xie Ying’an, but in their class, other than the teachers, he was the only one with better grades than her.

Xie Ying’an checked the answers quickly. Only the last four problems of the papers Qingran had done yesterday were incorrect.

He circled the wrong questions and placed the practice book midway between them. Qingran moved closer.

"For this question," Xie Ying’an used his pen to circle a number, explaining, "you overlooked this given condition when solving it..."

Zheng Chunming and Li Ce exchanged looks at the desk behind.

Li Ce remarked, "Indeed, only the top students are diligent."

Zheng Chunming also sighed, "It seems without ranking second in the grade, you don’t even qualify to ask Brother An questions."

Li Ce disagreed with this, whispering, "Chunni, if you looked like Qingran, I don’t believe Brother An wouldn’t help you with questions!"

Zheng Chunming scoffed: "You think Brother An is as shallow as you? Just judging by appearances."

"You don’t understand men," Li Ce scratched his head, "Only we men truly understand men."

Qingran was indeed careless, which led to a calculation mistake.

Based on the solving approach Xie Ying’an shared, she quickly corrected it. Xie Ying’an didn’t explain the last three problems to her, clearly noticing she had written them haphazardly.

Qingran took back her practice book, flipping to the last page to check the approximate time noted for the remarks; the last question was done just before she left school, and Wen Shiyi came to ask a question before the first class in the afternoon.

That meant touching Xie Ying’an’s hand would let her remain unaffected by the heroine’s aura for about three hours.

Tsk! That’s really cheap, she thought it would at least last a day.

During break, Qingran went to the restroom with Ruan Ruan.

Su Chen approached, sitting in the empty seat in front of Xie Ying’an, smiling somewhat awkwardly: "Brother An, did you hear what Old Wu just said?"

Xie Ying’an didn’t pay attention: "What did you say?"

Su Chen knew it would be like this, "It’s about the homework that wasn’t submitted. Write it ten times and hand it in tomorrow. Old Wu has a list too."

"Oh," Xie Ying’an responded.

"Then, then, then..." Su Chen chuckled nervously as he rubbed his hands, finally asking his real question: "Brother An, are you going to write it? Ten times!"

He even crossed his fingers to make the number ten.

Xie Ying’an, as expected, did not disappoint him and said lightly: "Not writing."

"Hehe," Su Chen grinned: "If Brother An isn’t writing, then neither am I."

After saying that, he walked away happily shaking his head.

Li Ce who witnessed it all: "..."

Huh? How come he remembers Brother An did submit his homework today?

Xie Ying’an always remembered, the second day he sat with Qingran, when the class representative came to collect the homework, Qingran handed in hers and the representative looked towards him.

He didn’t move for a long time, until Qingran also looked at him puzzled. He was startled and finally squeezed out two words through clenched teeth: "Didn’t write."

The class representative smiled awkwardly and walked away with a stack of homework.

Qingran looked at him again before burying her head in her homework, not saying anything.

Yet, that "so this is what a good student looks like" gaze made Xie Ying’an remember it for a lifetime.

After that, no matter how busy or how much homework there was, he diligently completed and submitted it, not wanting to see Qingran look at him with that gaze again.

That kind of look always made him feel as if there was a huge gap between them that he couldn’t cross.

Qingran had just returned to the classroom and sat down when the bell for class rang.

This class was biology, and she hadn’t even had time to pull out her biology book, watching as the biology teacher was about to reach the podium, she hurriedly reached into her desk to find it.

She managed to grab her biology book before the teacher stepped up to the podium, not anticipating a baby blue envelope coming out with it.

All the classmates were greeting the biology teacher.

At this crucial moment, Qingran pressed her hand on the baby blue envelope.

When she sat down, her heart raced a bit faster—it was the uncomfortable feeling of worrying about getting caught even though she didn’t do anything wrong.

Qingran worried that she might be overthinking, so she specially checked the characters on the envelope, it was indeed addressed to "Student Qingran."

She sighed silently—without opening the envelope, she guessed what was inside. Apart from studies, boys and girls in high school typically occupied their minds with such things.

Perhaps her good exam results this time made the letter writer blur the line between admiring her rank and liking her personally, recklessly stuffing in a love letter without worrying about troubling her life.

Maybe everyone at that age of budding feelings has a misconception, liking his (her) grades is akin to liking him (her) as a person, only to realize after not studying together that, oh, I didn’t actually like him (her) that much!

Qingran chose to ignore this letter. She was just about to stuff it back into the desk to deal with after school.

Suddenly, the envelope was quickly taken by someone next to her before Qingran could hold it down.

Xie Ying’an held the envelope in his hand, glancing sideways at Qingran with a cold smirk: "A love letter?"

"Give it to me first." Qingran leaned over the desk, lowering her voice as she reached out to him.

The look on Xie Ying’an’s face suddenly turned cold, not even a trace of a smile left: "Getting bold, aren’t you, Li Qingran."

Xie Ying’an tore the envelope to shreds, then crumpled it and threw it behind him, accurately landing it into the trash can.

Qingran: "..."

The first love letter in her life, and she didn’t even get a chance to glance at what was written. Could she say she was curious about the person’s writing style?
