Chapter 198: Chapter 192 Beyond the Goal

Qingran was right to expect that there wouldn’t just be a single subject exam on Monday. Almost every teacher had prepared test papers.

The examination lasted for two full days, and by now the students had grown accustomed to it. Hardly anyone complained all day long anymore; everyone knew that complaining wouldn’t change anything. They figured it was better to use that time to solve a couple more problems.

After the exams, Qingran felt much more relaxed. These past few days, she was under Old Wu’s watchful eye, which really scared her.

She swore that if she ever took a leave again, she would absolutely not drag Xie Ying’an into it, even if he pestered her.

After all, being watched by Old Wu while studying was truly an uncomfortable experience.

Xie Ying’an was also under Old Wu’s scrutiny, but he didn’t show any signs of nervousness. Whether in class or during self-study, he would do his exercises or let his mind wander as usual, not caring whether Old Wu was watching him or not. In Old Wu’s words, he was the type who ’couldn’t care less about boiling water as if he were a swine’.

Old Wu had no way to deal with Xie Ying’an, only waiting for the exam results to come out to talk about it.

Class 2 of the second grade returned to the tense atmosphere prior to the final exams. As they were about to move into third grade, they really had no time to fool around.

They had now entered the countdown to the college entrance exam, which was a crucial determinant of their futures.

After a grueling two-day exam, on Wednesday Old Wu still remembered to personally collect Qingran and Xie Ying’an’s test papers from the class.

Fortunately, they both had finished. Old Wu took their papers, flipping through them casually -- first to the middle, then to the last page -- and upon seeing the densely packed steps of the solutions, his expression finally softened.

During the lunch break, Ruan Ruan ran over to Li Ce’s seat to sit with Zheng Chunming. Li Ce had gone out with a few other boys, and even Xie Ying’an had left.

Ruan Ruan pulled Qingran around to chat with them. Huang Qianyu wasn’t in the classroom, and after Zheng Chunming confirmed it several times, she happily whispered to Qingran: "Really, you won’t believe it, Qingran, but Huang’s feelings for Brother An are as obvious as the intentions of Sima Zhao - everyone knows it..."

Of course, Qingran believed it. The Huang Qianyu from the book was much bolder than the one she knew. Perhaps to push the plot forward, the fictional Li Qingran and Huang Qianyu, who were supposed to be rivals, would always coincidentally do the same thing that was harmful to the heroine.

"But..." Ruan Ruan, with a curious and mischievous smile, looked at Qingran: "Ranran, while you were sick, Brother Mo still came to school to study, but Brother An—"

Seeing Ruan Ruan like that, Qingran knew what she was thinking and abruptly interrupted her next words: "Studying is the most important; everything else is just a cloud. How did you guys do on the exam this time?"

It had to be said that although Qingran’s change of subject was abrupt, it was very effective.

Instantly, both Ruan Ruan and Zheng Chunming had pained expressions on their faces.

Especially Zheng Chunming, who lay in a despondent heap on the desk, sounding utterly morose; the enthusiasm for gossip had vanished: "Don’t even mention it. I was ranked in the top twenty-five of our class in the final exams, but this time I might not even make the top thirty."

Not making the top thirty in the class meant that her ranking would be around medium at best. Zheng Chunming’s grades always fluctuated; either average or slightly above average, which essentially came down to her not studying hard enough.

Ruan Ruan also didn’t look too pleased: "At the end of last term, I was hanging onto the top ten of our class and squeezed into the top hundred of the year. This time it might be a bit bleak, I found some of the questions difficult, wuwu..."

With that, Ruan Ruan made a fake crying gesture, rubbing her eyes, "I won’t say anything more; I might as well go practice some more problems."

Having said that, she stood up and headed back to her own seat. Halfway there, Ruan Ruan seemed to remember something and circled back. She leaned close to Qingran’s ear and pointed at Wen Shiyi, whispering, "I feel like my deskmate has been somewhat distracted these past few days. When we were handing in our papers yesterday, I happened to see that she didn’t even do the last two major questions. Sigh... I really don’t know what’s gotten into her?"

Everybody at school who had eyes could tell there was something ambiguous going on between Wen Shiyi and Liang Fan.

So, the only thing Ruan Ruan could guess that would put Wen Shiyi in such a bad mood today must be ’romantic’ issues. But Liang Fan had always been even more sycophantic than a bootlicker when it came to Wen Shiyi. What was Wen Shiyi so unhappy about after all?

Qingran didn’t feel comfortable answering this question and simply went along with Ruan Ruan’s guess.

While the two of them were quietly chatting away, a familiar voice suddenly rang out from outside the classroom: "Ruan Ruan! Ruan Ruan!! Come out!!!!!"

Both could tell; it was Song Shize’s voice.

Ruan Ruan glanced towards the classroom door and immediately spotted Song Shize standing in the back. She frowned and muttered under her breath, "Why would Song Shize come to Class One to find me?"

What’s up with this guy and his mixed-up wires now?

Qingran wasn’t sure why Song Shize would suddenly show up in Class One either. Especially since Song Shize himself had said before that he didn’t like coming to Class One because it had too many top students, which somehow clashed with his birthdate or fortunes or whatever.

Ruan Ruan was only late by a minute or two, but an impatient Song Shize was already shouting at the door: "Ruan Ruan, aren’t you coming out yet? Do you want me to go in there and invite you myself?"

Curious glances were thrown from the classmates within.

Ruan Ruan felt embarrassed. She quickened her pace and shouted back at Song Shize: "Am I not coming out? Can you shut your mouth?! Don’t you know it’s embarrassing for you to be shouting like this?!"

Then, the voice outside gradually subsided.

The classmates’ curiosity in Class One didn’t last two minutes. Seeing the two outside talking about something whilst being unable to catch a word, they all begrudgingly lowered their heads and continued to slog through their problems.

It had to be said, the study atmosphere in Class One was really good. Even during self-study time when the teacher wasn’t around, no one, except for the academically gifted Xie Ying’an, would waste time playing on their phones.

It was probably because of this atmosphere that the students of Class One always showed the fastest improvement in their grades throughout the school.

At 19:42 in the evening, Qingran rubbed her eyebrows, feeling somewhat tired, and cast an envious glance at Xie Ying’an, who was still on his phone.

The results for this physics exam had come out in the afternoon. As expected, Xie Ying’an was still first.

Qingran was two points behind him. After taking a step forward, she had fallen back to the second place again.

It would be a lie to say she didn’t envy Xie Ying’an. Usually, she didn’t see Xie Ying’an study particularly hard, but he always performed well during exams. This was somewhat otherworldly.

Mainly because she, who studied painstakingly and diligently and had worked hard on her studies with the intent on overtaking Xie Ying’an’s grades, found that the gap in their academic performance wasn’t at all about that bit of effort.

It was killing her, but all she could do was tie with Xie Ying’an.

Forget it, Qingran thought. With one year left until the college entrance examination, she would give it her all to study diligently during this year, and see if she could surpass Xie Ying’an after all.
