Chapter 986: Chapter 986: Sphinx 6
Daniel’s face was pale as death.
He was only two or three steps away from the Sphinx, which he should have climbed energetically, but at this moment, his limbs went numb, paralyzed!
Why?!
Why did Bruce die?!
The answer to that riddle was clearly ’human’! — In life’s morning, crawling on all fours; at noon, walking on two legs; and in the evening of life, old and decrepit, needing a cane, thus, three legs!
The well-known answer, why doesn’t it work here?!
Mute has already fallen to his death, and now Bruce is dead too. If he answers wrong one more time, he would lose the game!
Under the blazing sun, Daniel was drenched in a cold sweat.
He thought desperately, frantically, where had he gone wrong?! The answer was clearly ’human’, so why was it incorrect?! Could it be... could it be... not accurate enough?
Daniel slowly calmed down.
Could there be more than one answer? Maybe he should reply ’baby’, ’youth’, ’elder’.
That doesn’t seem right either.
Children also walk on two legs and shouldn’t be restricted to the term "youth", so how should he describe it? Adult? Grown-up? Teenager?... None are precise enough!
Daniel scratched his head in agitation!
From the corner of his eye, he caught sight of those stone swords, and another thought emerged: Could there be something amiss with the swords?
Perhaps Bruce’s answer was correct but he chose the wrong sword. Although it wasn’t explicitly stated to select the correct sword, maybe there’s a trap in the rule itself!
Daniel gritted his teeth and, exerting his arms with force, climbed the last few stone steps!
The Sphinx loomed before him.
A blur of blood and flesh stained the ground; Daniel dared not look too long, forcing himself to focus on the differences between those stone swords.
The sunlight bleached the bricks, the swords wedged in the crevices, at a glance resembling densely packed graveyard crosses.
Daniel’s body shook uncontrollably.
He feared ending up crushed and shattered, but he couldn’t bear to lose this way!
"Damn it, if I had known this game would be like this..." he cursed through clenched teeth, regret surging like unstoppable waves, suffocating him wave after wave.
Had he known it was this kind of game, perhaps he should have not entered the fray...
He had been misled by Willard, thinking that a numerical advantage was but a matter of time for victory, but in reality! The advantage of numbers was extremely limited in the game!
What should he do now?
He couldn’t see any difference between these stone swords! If this went on, all he could do was wait for death!
The giant Sphinx lay in the middle of the platform, silent as if waiting for him to choose a sword before posing its question.
Daniel wandered among the swords, stressing over them, comparing them back and forth, and became increasingly perplexed.
The scorching sun baked him, time ticked second by second, leaving him parched and his vision dimming. If this didn’t end soon, even if the Sphinx laid no hand on him, he would be baked alive right here!
A faint sound from behind made him start; turning his head in astonishment, he saw Xiaoxin leaning on the edge of the stone steps, climbing up bit by bit—
Blood on her fingers, her face smeared with blood too; that fall just now seemed to have cracked her forehead, and there was no telling what other wounds she bore, covered in dirt and dried blood.
Daniel looked at her, stunned for a full thirty seconds.
As Xiaoxin made it up completely, Daniel suddenly smiled, then said to Xiaoxin expectantly, "Kiddo, why don’t you take a guess too, at the Sphinx’s riddle."
Xiaoxin saw the line of words:
[Choose a stone sword, and after answering the question correctly, you will get what you desire.]
Looking up again, she saw the horrendous sight of blood and guts before her.
Xiaoxin pursed her lips and looked at Daniel: "What was his answer just now?"
Daniel was taken aback.
Xiaoxin asked him seriously once more: "Just now, what did that black man answer?"
