Chapter 101: Chapter 101 Thank You, I Love You_1
Wu Qiyi’s eyes had always been sharp, and with her strong powers of observation, it didn’t take her long to see through the old lady’s character. After previous conversations with the elderly woman, she believed that this old lady must be someone with a very stubborn temperament and an incredibly strong heart.
She felt the same way about herself; thus, Wu Qiyi believed that the letters had not been destroyed but rather kept hidden away.
To your surprise, the old lady actually nodded in agreement and invited you inside.
The house had no special decorations and was the most ordinary of homes. The furniture inside seemed to have seen many years, simple and unadorned yet conveying the unique charm of that era.
When the old lady held a cookie tin you often saw in your childhood, the ghost beside her couldn’t help but exclaim, "Old woman, you actually kept it, these letters weren’t burned?"
The old lady placed the cookie tin on the spotted solid wood table with a flaking red paint, and with her wrinkled hands, she gently caressed the tin, her eyes filled with endless nostalgia, "As one grows old, one does like to reminisce about the past. This cookie tin was given to me by that messy old man on my twentieth birthday. That old codger wasn’t romantic at all, not even knowing what I liked. He roamed around Eastern Sea City and in the end, he only bought me a box of cookies, claiming they were imported from Belgium."
Despite saying this, the old lady’s eyes were already turning red.
"The cookies were too sweet, and I don’t like sweet things. I gave them all to the kids next door, which made that old man so angry he didn’t talk to me for a month." As she spoke, the old lady couldn’t help but laugh.
This laugh was tinged with bitterness, but it was mostly filled with sweetness.
The sweetness was like wine; it required time to accumulate, to settle. The older it got, the richer it became, and the more fragrant.
"Grandma, can we open it and take a look?"
Wu Qiyi’s voice remained gentle, yet in that gentleness was mixed a tremor of excitement; she was very eager to know just how deep the emotions contained within the story of a couple who had loved each other for more than sixty years.
The old lady opened the cookie tin, and with her shaky hands, she took out an envelope that had yellowed with age. The writing on the paper was done in vertical script, in the style of the past.
"This letter was written to the old man on my thirtieth birthday."
The old lady sat to one side, quietly watching you.
You opened the letter, and the content was quite simple, just a few brief sentences. Nevertheless, it was interesting to read— "Deng Nianran, you dead piece of wood! Miss here really was blind to marry a stubborn mule like you! Dead Wood, Dead Wood, Dead Wood..."
You laughed.
Wu Qiyi laughed as well.
The two of you exchanged a look, and a special kind of affection slowly began to bloom between you.
After reading a few letters in succession, they were all just the old lady grumbling over trivial matters, which appeared particularly heartwarming and cute to you.
It came down to the last letter. The moment you opened this final one, with just a casual glance, Wu Qiyi, who had been smiling, started to cry. You turned to look at her, and tears were already overflowing...
"Old man, how come these eighty years have flown by so fast? I feel it’s not enough, really not enough. You stubborn old blockhead, you never talked much to me from beginning to end, and then you just left quietly. I know my time isn’t much either, but I just feel it’s not enough. What should I do? I followed you all my life, suffered all my life, and yet, how could I still be so foolish to want to keep on living life with you? Old thing, are you lonely down there? Without me, who else would want you, you piece of wood... Wait for me, okay? I’ll be seeing you soon... If there is a next life, I’ll still pester you, you stubborn old wood."
You turn your head away, trying your best not to let your tears fall...
And the old man saw all these letters, his eyes brimming with tears when you turned to look at him, he stood in front of the old lady as if frozen, staring at her as if for another century...
"Clang clang..."
A very peculiar sound suddenly came from outside the door. Hearing this sound, you couldn’t help but stand up abruptly.
"What’s wrong?" Wu Qiyi noticed your expression was a bit strange and quickly asked.
"They’re here."
No sooner had you spoken than two Ghosts strode in through the main entrance with ease.
"Master Li, we meet again."
The Ghost holding the ledger cupped his hands in greeting, still demonstrating polite manners.
"Elder Brother Cha, are you here to take the old man away?"
You tentatively asked.
The Ghost with the Iron Chain simply stated, "Both of them."
"Both?" Upon hearing this, Wu Qiyi couldn’t help but exclaim, "Could it be that the old lady, she..."
"Old Man, you see?" The old woman suddenly smiled at the old man who had been staring at her.
"You... Old woman, can you see me?"
"Nonsense, I’ve been dead for two days already!" The old lady appeared very open-minded, and her mood seemed good, having untied her heart’s knots.
However, the old man burst into tears, "Old woman, I...I’ve wronged you... I’ve never given you a good life all these years, I..."
"I am content." The old lady walked up to the old man and gently nestled in his embrace.
The Ghost with the ledger said to the two elders, "The time has come for you both to go. Being able to walk the Netherworld Path together is a blessing you cultivated in a previous life. In view of Master Li’s kindness, once we reach Lord Yama, I will speak well on your behalf so that in the next life, you can continue to be entwined and tied to each other."
"Good, good..."
Upon these words, both elders’ faces broke into smiles, and you quickly bowed in thanks to the Ghost with the ledger, "Thank you, Elder Brother Cha."
"There’s no need for thanks, Master Li. The two of them were paired by fate, yet they stuck together through thick and thin, supporting each other to this day, a fate they earned themselves. Heaven watches over the deeds of men; every good and evil, every right and wrong a person commits in the Yang Realm is recorded clearly in the Book of Life and Death."
The other Ghost shook the Iron Chain and said, "Let’s go."
"Actually, Elder Brother Cha, could you let them go without the Iron Chain, allowing the two to walk out supporting each other?" Seeing the Ghost preparing to bind the nearly centenarian elders with chains, you couldn’t help but intercede on their behalf.
After exchanging a glance, the Ghost with the Iron Chain withdrew it at the nod from the Ghost with the ledger.
The two elders exchanged smiles, deeply bowed to you and Wu Qiyi, then turned and followed the Ghosts toward the door.
"Old Man, don’t think you can slip by in death; don’t forget, you still owe me a few words."
"Old woman, in my life, I’ve been muddled and hesitant, but there’s one thing I did right, something that has brought me happiness for a lifetime."
"What is it?"
"You. I’m grateful that the heavens allowed me to meet you at my most confused time; also, I’m thankful that you gave me the best years of your life. Thank you... I love you..."
