"Alright then. Let’s do it." Areon’s voice cut through the charged air, and now he bore a grin just as crazed as Razeal’s. His eyes locked with Razeal’s, fire meeting fire, pride meeting defiance. "But what do I get? You gotta give me something worth enough, right?" His voice dripped with challenge as he tilted his head, the grin on his face strained by the fury barely kept in check.

The words had barely left Areon’s mouth when the entire Colosseum gasped as one. A shudder ran through the stands a sound like the collective heartbeat of thousands stopping for a moment.

If Razeal’s demand had been blasphemous, Areon’s response had taken it even further. Now both of them had spat in the face of the sacred. Not only had Razeal dared to put the Holy Promise on the line, but Areon had agreed to wager it reducing the sacred gift of the Church to nothing more than a bargaining chip in a duel.

Far off near the shadowed edge of the arena, a Radiant Knight, dressed in gold armor that gleamed faintly under the sun, tensed. His hand slid to the hilt of his sword, his eyes blazing as his fingers curled tightly around it. The insult, the dishonor, the sheer audacity of what had just been spoken all while the Saintess stood silently near these two? His duty screamed at him to act. To punish this disrespect, to defend her honor, to cleanse the ground of this filth.

But before steel could leave its sheath, Selena raised her hand, graceful but firm, stopping him without a word. Her senses had already reached out, as sharp as the coldness that had settled in her gaze. She had felt it felt how the moment the knight had twitched, twenty greater killing intents had locked onto him, ready to strike. Silent, hidden, waiting. He couldn’t even sense their positions. But Selena had. And she knew. If he had drawn, he would already be dead.

The Radiant Knight straightened at once, his fingers relaxing on the hilt, his eyes shutting for the briefest moment as he mastered himself. He fell back into stillness, a statue hidden in plain sight, positioned where none would think to look, his entire focus now on Selena. Every breath she took, every smallest gesture his life was hers to protect.

He had been ready to act because silence in the face of such insult would be cowardice. And cowardice would be a stain upon him, upon the church, upon his oaths. He would not have let that happen. And if in dying someone touched the Saintess without his protection? Let the world burn.

But Selena’s voice came, cold and steady. "I allow it."

Another gasp louder than before, rolling across the stands like thunder. Her words shocked the crowd so deeply that even those seated in the high balconies nobles, envoys, watchers of great importance stood from their seats without realizing, their eyes wide with disbelief. The Saintess herself had allowed this travesty to continue?

Selena’s face showed no emotion, but inside she burned with frustration. What are you doing, Razeal? she thought. Why do you keep offending everyone, again and again? What the actual fuck he is trying to do? She couldn’t see it, couldn’t understand his mind. And even Areon... Can’t he see what he just did? Was he trying to start a war?

But Selena knew refusing would ignite something even worse. The fire would spread far beyond these two boys. Better to allow it, to contain it, than to let it spiral into chaos.

"Good. Very good," Razeal said, his grin wide, his eyes bright with satisfaction. The pieces of his plan were falling into place. Exactly as he intended.

So easy to play these kids, Razeal thought, the amusement in his mind hidden behind that wild smile. All pride, all emotion, no control. Just push the right buttons.

Areon’s composure cracked at the sight of that smile. His fury surged, but he kept his voice steady or tried to. "Don’t make that ugly grin. Tell me, what will I get in return?" His lips curled in disdain, his pride demanding he take something. "Or are you trying to ignore it? Maybe greed’s closed your eyes and you can’t see? You’re too greedy. What do you even have to give me, anyway? I heard you’re homeless. Kicked out? No family, no name, nothing."

His grin was forced now, eyebrows twitching despite his effort to seem calm. The insult burned his throat, but he couldn’t stop himself. This boy had dragged him into a pit of dishonor. Areon had been given no choice he couldn’t back down, not without shattering his dignity before all these eyes. So he lashed out. Tried to degrade, to humiliate. Words he would never have spoken in any other moment, words beneath him, spilled from his mouth now, born of anger and desperation.

The crowd stood frozen, caught in the storm between these two. And the duel of honor loomed, inevitable, inescapable.

But then again, any flicker of remorse Areon might have felt was gone in an instant. After all, didn’t this wretch deserve it? A man kicked out by his own family for disgusting reasons, disgraced and abandoned wasn’t it right that he be reminded of it, again and again? Areon’s pride burned too brightly for guilt to linger.

Razeal, his grin still etched across his face, opened his mouth as if to fire back. But then, for the briefest heartbeat, his smile faltered. His lips pressed together, his eyes narrowed, dark with something sharp and dangerous. A flash of fury, of pain, crossed his face so quick, so fleeting that most would have missed it.
