Chapter 56: Chapter 053 What is Daddy’s Daddy Called...
Dawn!
The sky brightened.
Downstairs in the residential complex.
The apocalypse had arrived, and with the body being of utmost importance, Lin Fan, after entrusting Mengmeng to Sister Li, went downstairs to exercise on the fitness equipment. Two elderly gentlemen were already there.
Greeting them, he joined the exercise group.
The complex was now safe, and the sealed iron gates became their shelter.
"Lin Fan, run an errand for me and rent some books. How much will it cost?" Old Mr. Wang inquired.
"Elder, do you want me to go to Huang City Library?"
"Yes, the Huang City Library."
Lin Fan thought about the distance, which seemed not too far, "Fifty should do it."
In his mind, the fee charged depended on how far he had to travel and whether he might encounter zombies. If he was careful, he’d definitely avoid conflict with the zombies, so the fee could be relatively low.
"Lin Fan, you run errands with a conscience. As an old man, I can’t let you lose out. Make it a hundred for the errand fee, and just rent a few books on network equipment repair for me,"
Old Mr. Wang wanted Chen He to learn properly; since he didn’t understand, then he should study. Although it was the apocalypse, it seemed unnecessary to learn about network maintenance.
But living is about learning.
Not learning just wouldn’t do.
"Alright, I got it," Lin Fan nodded.
He didn’t see the man named Chen He whom he had rescued yesterday and could guess why—the man had surely needed time to recover from such a huge shock.
Outside the complex.
Looking at the bodies of zombies in the street.
Lin Fan, with a sense of resignation, touched his head. These bodies were from yesterday’s killing. If he kept piling them up, they would surely emit a foul smell. Soon, the whole complex could smell it, and the odor would attract flies and the like.
As the complex’s security, he definitely couldn’t ignore it.
"To work, to work."
Lin Fan clapped his hands and started to get busy, putting the halved bodies into the garbage bins. The bins were not large and couldn’t hold much, forcing him to constantly look for more bins.
But there were only so many bins by the streets, and even with those from the complex, it wasn’t enough.
He had to take one batch away then come back for another.
On the quiet streets, only Lin Fan’s figure, pushing the garbage bin, could be seen. Despite the apocalypse, he still took care of the environment around him.
He kept busy.
After a while.
The bodies of the zombies at the entrance of the complex were finally cleaned up, but the stains on the ground were another issue. The black sticky substance was truly disgusting, but what could he do.
These were all his doing.
If the sanitation workers saw this, they’d surely say, "How could you do this, young man? You’ve made these nice streets so dirty, hurry up and find something to clean it up with."
He had no choice but to continue his efforts. Fortunately, he was on good terms with Gu Wen, the owner of Xinfeng Real Estate, and went to his store.
"Boss, I’m borrowing a mop and bucket, I’ll return it soon."
After saying these words, he waited quietly for a few seconds.
No reply.
That meant the boss agreed to lend them to him.
Borrowing things needed to be mentioned, no matter how well you knew the person. If something wasn’t yours, you had to get permission to use it.
Carrying a bucket filled with water, he poured it onto the ground and began wiping with the mop. It was a physical task. Cleaning was exhausting, especially on the waist.
After a while, Lin Fan stopped his movements and pretended to wipe his forehead, then gently rubbed his waist.
There was no sweat, and his waist wasn’t tired at all. This act was simply to blend into the atmosphere of doing chores.
The ground was cleaned.
He carried the bucket and the clean mop back to Xinfeng Real Estate and said to the empty store,
Thank you.
Huang City Public Library.
Arriving at the familiar place and seeing the known doors, he looked towards the distance, where there was some activity.
On his way to the library, a group of zombies spotted him. Thinking about borrowing books, he did not slash at the group but quickened his pace instead.
The zombies could run fast, but he was faster, losing them in the blink of an eye.
"Truly a bunch of unfriendly fellows."
Without overthinking, he entered the library.
Since no one had cleaned up, the library was now covered in dust. He was powerless to change that. He wasn’t a library worker, or he might have been able to clean it up a bit.
As usual, he signed in and then, following the book classification signs, arrived at the section for the type of books Old Mr. Wang needed.
Old Mr. Wang hadn’t specified any titles, just the category, so he picked out a few books at random. Renting too many books could lead to not being able to read them all, so he decided to rent only two for Old Mr. Wang.
After they were read, if Old Mr. Wang needed more, he could continue running errands.
Then he could earn more errand fees.
This was a long-term part-time job, and quite a good one.
"Network Equipment Management and Maintenance"
He skimmed the table of contents, which seemed quite complex, with a total of seven Chapters.
Chapter One: Basic Knowledge of Computer Networks.
Chapter Two: Introduction to Network Hardware Devices and Software ENSP.
Chapter Three: The Construction of a Small-Scale Local Area Network.
Chapter Four: The Construction of a Medium-Scale Local Area Network.
Chapter Five: Local Network Security and Management.
Chapter Six: The Interconnected Wide Area Network.
Chapter Seven: The Comprehensive Application of Campus Network Construction.
"It really does look quite high-end." Lin Fan held this book, along with another one, feeling they were both very complex. With his knowledge and abilities, he probably didn’t need to read them, since he wouldn’t understand them anyway.
He registered, paid the deposit, turned around and left the library, making sure to close the door behind him. After all, in this apocalypse, not everyone was as civilized as he was. Take those zombies, for example; it seemed that other than biting, they had no other thoughts.
It was when he was leaving the library.
There was a roaring sound from across the street.
A steel beast was speeding toward the distance, and the noise stirred many zombies to chase after it.
"Huh, it’s them."
Though the distance was significant, his vision was excellent. Through the iron mesh of the car windows, he could see the people inside; they were the same ones he had met in the library a long time ago.
He waved his hand at the car. Maybe they couldn’t see him, but it was okay to wave and say hello. After all, they were all survivors in the apocalypse. Wasn’t it reasonable and appropriate to greet each other?
"They probably didn’t see me," Lin Fan mumbled to himself.
At that moment.
Inside the steel behemoth, Xu Zeyang was looking at the street, unfazed by the chasing zombies. Accustomed to life in the apocalypse, he just hoped that one day the zombies would truly disappear.
He had now formed a deep friendship with the big sister and her group.
They helped each other, surviving in an apocalypse devoid of humanity and morality.
He glanced at the Yellow City Public Library.
"Damn!"
Xu Zeyang exclaimed as if he had seen a ghost, rubbing his eyes in disbelief.
"What happened?"
The others asked, thinking something was wrong.
"Big sister, quickly look at the library. There’s someone there, looks like that blessed survivor we met before. He dares to roam around so brazenly," Xu Zeyang exclaimed.
By the time she wanted to look toward the library, the vehicle had already passed by.
"Old Mao, honk the horn to help draw the zombies away from him," the big sister said after thinking, as their situation felt very safe. Even if they stopped, it was impossible for the horde of zombies outside to break through the steel beast.
Of course, remembering the giant zombie they had seen before, which was truly terrifying with seemingly great strength, they worried that even their steel beast might not be able to withstand it.
"Roger that."
Beep, beep, beep.
Old Mao honked the horn and sped up, vanishing at the end of the street.
Having left the library, Lin Fan heard the sound of the horn and pondered. Perhaps they had seen him and remembered him, so they were honking as a form of communication.
Indeed, even in the apocalypse, there were still friendly people.
On his way home.
He passed a baby store, just walked by, then stepped back and stood in front of the shop.
Thinking that the day was still young and he had already made a hundred bucks, he felt inexplicably happy. Mengmeng was still young and must have felt lonely at times. It was time to buy her a toy.
"Not bad, I should buy one."
Walking into the store, the floor was filthy and in disarray due to the lack of cleaning, but he was still able to find a decent toy.
He chose a cactus toy that could twist its body and talk.
He checked the price.
Twenty yuan.
The price was reasonable and within his affordability.
After paying, he unpacked it, finding that batteries were included.
He turned on the switch.
The cactus toy was twisting and singing.
"What is daddy’s daddy called? Daddy’s daddy is called grandpa. What is daddy’s mommy called? Daddy’s mommy is called grandma..."
"Quite amusing," Lin Fan chuckled.
Outside, a bewildered zombie wandered aimlessly through the streets, passing by the baby store. Upon hearing the sound, the zombie began to search, as if trying to find out who was making the noise.
In an instant.
Lin Fan and the zombie made eye contact.
"Roar!"
The zombie roared fiercely.
The toy cactus continued to twist.
"What is daddy’s brother called? Daddy’s brother is called..."
Roar!
The zombie roared and viciously lunged at Lin Fan. It had no interest in the toy that could make sounds and twist its waist. It only cared for Lin Fan, the person holding the toy cactus.
Delicious flesh.
Often, that was the zombies’ favorite thing.
