Chapter 47: Chapter 044 I Never Like Owing Money
A certain district.
At the dining table.
"Brother, he’s okay, right?" Ren Jiali asked while eating.
The dining table in front of them was set with meals that were not lavish, but still decent.
Tomato and scrambled eggs.
Vegetable soup.
Stir-fried green peppers with shredded pork.
And the indispensable Lao Gan Ma chili sauce for the dining table— even without any other dishes, just with Lao Gan Ma, you could scrape together a bowl of rice.
"He’s fine. It’s always like this the first time. He did okay. Fatties have their advantages, while skinny guys just wail, but he, hehehe..."
Ren Yan laughed heartily, his emptiness of the past few days fully satiated. He naturally had no interest in women, not the slightest bit attracted to them.
Ren Jiali knew her brother’s methods. Those tender-looking young men brought home by her brother could only say, who could imagine that, looking so prim and proper with glasses, they would be into her brother’s type.
Some tender flesh got dumped by her brother.
They even thought about jumping off a building.
But after getting a stern glance from her brother, they obediently came down from upstairs, shrinking into the corner like little chicks, getting smacked in the face by her brother until they saw stars, furiously berated, "If you’ve got the guts, go jump off at your own place, don’t do it in my house. Get lost."
In the eyes of the tender flesh, she didn’t see hatred, but rather that deeply subdued look. She couldn’t understand it and could only say it was perverse.
"Brother, we can’t keep hiding out here, we need to find a way to change places."
Ren Jiali had already allocated the supplies at home. At most, they would last ten to fifteen days. The water was safe to drink; her brother would drink it straight from the tap, which proved it was fine. She didn’t have the courage to do the same.
"Mmm, you keep an eye from the balcony these days. If someone drives by, try to lure them up here. Now that the end times have come, anyone who can drive around outside has some means to keep themselves alive. When their lives are secure, women and supplies become their first choice. Don’t underestimate the end times; morality has degraded, people do as they please. In times of tension and pressure, women become the best outlet for those guys," Ren Yan said while eating.
"Brother, your words are very disrespectful to women," Ren Jiali commented.
"Heh, it’s not a lack of respect, but mostly how it is. The ones alive are all tough characters."
...
Inside the room.
He Mingxuan, known as the Cleaver, was tied up, his face haggard and his eyes lifelessly staring at the ceiling.
Voices echoed in his mind.
How could this happen to me?
Why did this happen?
He had thought in the apocalypse, one couldn’t trust other people. But he was confident in his physique, believing that even if someone harbored other intentions, he could take control of the situation.
But who would have expected... to encounter someone even stronger than him.
He was even prepared to submit to that person, to become his subordinate in the apocalypse, to charge into battle for him, to do those evil deeds.
But who could have expected that this guy would actually... actually...
Whimper...
He didn’t want to speak of it; it was just too shameful. Even now, his rear still hurt terribly, and he just felt nauseous.
He struggled, but the bonds were too tight; breaking free seemed nearly impossible. The thought of the big guy’s brutality sent shivers down his spine.
To pinch him, slap him, abuse him, and spit on him.
If he didn’t figure out a way to leave, it would indeed end horribly. Now with the hospitals closed, there were no doctors, let alone someone from the proctology department.
Just then.
Ren Yan entered from outside, holding a bowl of rice, and approached He Mingxuan, the Cleaver. He removed the cloth stuffed in his mouth and fed him the rice.
"My little darling, don’t think about leaving. It’s so good here, with food, play, and someone to take care of you. Just be obedient. If you’re not, I’ll have to throw you outside, and those zombies won’t be as friendly to you," he said.
"Come on, eat up."
To He Mingxuan, refusing food would be idiotic. He gobbled down mouthfuls.
Seeing him eat with such gusto, Ren Yan smiled with satisfaction.
"Eat more, nourish your spirit; I’ll pamper you again later."
He Mingxuan: ???
Fucking hell, are you a dog or what?
...
The water treatment plant.
Wang Kai and the rural mutt ate dog food, he was almost sick of it.
There was no other choice; apart from dog food, there was nothing else to eat.
At night, hearing the zombies’ roars, he felt utterly drained, his spirit severely tormented. If not for the company of the mutt, he feared he would go mad.
The water plant needed patrolling, equipment checks—a key aspect to maintaining the city’s water supply.
Through his exploration.
The location of the zombies at the water plant had been determined. Zombies stood swaying in place as if entering hibernation and made no significant movements without the disturbance of external sounds.
Of course, the mongrel dog accompanying him deserved much of the credit.
He had a smartphone.
He would strap the smartphone to the dog’s body, set the alarm, and then let the dog run out to lure the zombies away while he checked the water plant, thus buying him some time.
Such cooperation was not only his own achievement but also because the dog understood and could follow human commands.
It was time for another patrol.
"Sisi, it’s all on you. Sneak back here once the alarm stops," he instructed the dog.
Wang Kai patted Sisi’s head and then opened the door. The dog dashed out, and soon after, the piercing sound of the alarm rang out, causing the zombies in the water plant to go mad and charge towards the source of the sound.
Wang Kai took the opportunity to leave and inspect the equipment.
...
Sunshine District.
Security room.
Lin Fan faced the mirror in the security room, examining himself carefully. He was wearing a new security uniform, once prepared for the previous security guard of the district.
Looking at his reflection.
"I’m a security guard now. I need to maintain the safety of the district," Lin Fan murmured to himself.
Of course, the job of a security guard could be complex or simple depending on the situation. When people were around, they needed to register; when alone, he could see to his own affairs.
He could check his phone or hum a tune.
He wasn’t the type to relax too much; even while working as a security guard, he thought about cleaning up the surroundings outdoors.
Walking around the district, he scanned the environment to prevent thieves from climbing over the fence and checked for litter on the ground. If he saw any trash, he had to pick it up and throw it in the bin.
After completing his patrol, he didn’t spot any sly thieves.
The district was very safe.
Stepping out of the iron gate, he looked at the street’s environment.
"Ah, it’s so dirty," he lamented.
He really couldn’t stand it anymore; the once well-maintained streets had become so filthy.
He looked at his store, which he had cleaned spotlessly.
To be honest, there was a stark contrast between the two.
"Still, the store I’ve meticulously and conscientiously cleaned is cleaner, and the hundred bucks for the cleaning job are well worth it."
With a baby to care for now, his pressure had doubled; he needed to work hard.
He didn’t go far.
Xinfeng Real Estate.
"Boss, your shop is so dirty, let me clean it up for you. There’s quite a lot of broken glass on the floor, and it’s a bit dangerous. Plus, there are flyers everywhere, which makes cleaning difficult; it’s quite a big job," he said.
"Hmm... I owe you agent fees from before, so take that as payment for the cleaning job," the boss replied.
He didn’t like owing money to the boss.
Although Gu Wen, the owner of Xinfeng Real Estate, was handsome, generous, and friendly,
if he told the boss that he had been facing some difficulties lately,
the understanding boss would surely wave it off, saying it’s no big deal, and that it’s fine not to pay.
But he certainly wouldn’t do that.
He intended to sweat it out, to work off his debt through labor.
No sooner said than done.
He began cleaning, focusing on the scattered flyers; not leisurely as before but with increased speed, yet still very meticulous.
After cleaning the shop thoroughly, he dragged a trash bin over and looked at the boss, whom he had chopped in half with some regret. He should have been gentler at the time. With one hand, he grabbed one of the boss’s legs and stuffed Gu Wen into the bin.
Finally.
He looked at the sparkling new Xinfeng Real Estate with satisfaction.
"Boss, if you could see this, you’d definitely be pleased," Lin Fan said confidently.
He felt he had done a very thorough job cleaning up.
Looking at the sky, it was still early, not yet time to finish work.
He returned to the security room, sitting there obediently, watching the sealed iron gate. It was the only passage to the district and also the key indicator of the district’s safety.
He would not relent.
He must stay fully focused.
PS: Oh, you could also check out my old book "The Strong Ones That Walked Out of the Spirit Hospital" comic, available on Tencent Comics and the QiDian APP. It’s quite good.
