Chapter 393: Chapter 125: Child, I Hope You Can Be as Excellent as Officer Huang_5
"Come, a new round of cleansing begins."
He had worked very hard to clear the zombies from Huang City, but unfortunately, there was no way around it, the scope of Huang City was a bit large, with the east-west straight-line distance nearing a hundred kilometers, requiring twenty to thirty hours to traverse on foot.
That’s not taking into account the various twists and turns of the street blocks, a dreadful thought indeed.
Not to mention the population, and the number of people that turned into zombies.
It was truly terrifying.
Some things shouldn’t be calculated too meticulously, once you do, it becomes horrifying.
The population of Huang City was over ten million.
If the military were to clean it up, with soldiers armed with guns, each one a King of Soldiers with a hundred percent accuracy, achieving headshots with every shot, the amount of ammunition needed to clear all the zombies in Huang City would be unimaginable.
Lin Fan was clearing wave after wave of zombies, his weapon, Frostmourne, already stained with the blood of countless zombies. He just wanted to keep persisting.
Eventually to cleanse the city of zombies completely.
The process was long, requiring patience, but what he didn’t lack was just that, patience.
Dusk shrouded Huang City, and in the quiet streets, a man carrying a sword dragged an Evolutionary Zombie with severed limbs; the scene was as strange as it was bizarre.
Bound with ropes, the Evolutionary Zombies with severed limbs roared angrily.
It was a very shameful thing.
Belonging to the top of the zombie ranks, to be treated in such a manner was intolerable to any of them.
Passing a shop.
Lin Fan paused, looking up at the second-floor window of the store. Unable to sense the woman’s life force, he knew she had left this world.
Sigh.
"Life is fragile, we can only cherish what we have in front of us."
Inside the store at dusk, the light appeared dim yellow. On that bed, a woman laid with her eyes closed, her body already decomposed, with a stench spreading, a place from which anyone would stay far away.
But beside that body, Zombie Dongdong curled up, quietly lying next to it, emitting a low grunting sound. To hear such a noise was not to feel anger or ferocity, but instead, sadness.
All Dongdong wanted was to stay by his mother’s side, not willing to leave her.
If zombies could cry, Dongdong’s tears would have already drenched the sheets. In the indifferent apocalypse, this place alone held the happiness and solace for Dongdong.
"Dongdong."
A voice came from the street.
The Dongdong lying next to its mother responded with a low growl, perhaps not wanting to be disturbed, howling fiercely as it leaped from the window and landed on the ground, only to see the human standing there.
It roared furiously, as if venting the rage in its heart, the pain of its mother’s departure.
Lin Fan watched Dongdong.
"Your mother has left; you still have your life to live. You are a rational zombie. From the moment you protected your mother, you were different from these wild beasts," he said, pointing at the Evolutionary Zombies he was dragging.
Humiliation often appears capriciously.
Already so tragic, and yet to be treated thus, who could bear it?
Dongdong continued to growl at Lin Fan.
Lin Fan extended his hand, "Come, follow me. I will take you to someone worthy of your trust. He can look after you, and by his side you can learn how to survive in this apocalypse, how to become a child your mother would be proud of."
He didn’t know if Zombie Dongdong could understand.
But he had to say it. In his heart, he believed Dongdong could understand, just like Officer Huang, that those who held onto the purest beliefs, even if they became zombies, could still maintain their rationality.
Dongdong stood there, like a vulnerable child facing an approach of unknown danger, wanting only to cry out for his mother to rescue him. But seemingly aware that the one who could protect him was no longer there, he had to feign strength and growl warningly at the unrecognised threat.
Seeing that Dongdong remained standing, not coming closer, Lin Fan seemed to understand, remembering that this child was not like this before; it would fight viciously upon seeing zombies. Maybe it truly understood that its mother was gone, and out of fear of being struck, there was no longer a mother to hold and comfort it.
He walked towards Dongdong.
With each step forward he took.
Dongdong fearfully took a step back.
"Don’t be afraid," Lin Fan said softly.
Quickening his pace, he approached Dongdong, extended his hand, and smiled: "Come, take my hand. I will take you over there."
Dongdong issued a low grunt from its throat, shrinking its body, its grey-white eyes rolling, looking at the hand extended in front of it. As if it truly understood Lin Fan’s words, it slowly raised its hand and placed it in the palm of Lin Fan’s hand.
Lin Fan held Dongdong’s hand, a smile appearing on his face, "Let’s go."
He felt sorry for Dongdong’s plight.
Yet he felt happy too when he thought of Huang An’an whom he had rescued—the child who was truly pitiful, used as bait by her own mother to attract zombies, hung outside the building.
And while Dongdong became a zombie, its mother did not fear him or shun him, treating him consistently and with unwavering love.
The two cases were incomparable.
While both mothers, some did not deserve the title, while others truly embodied the meaning of ’a mother’s love is great.’
Huang City Police Station.
"Officer Huang, are you there?"
Lin Fan called out.
The day was not early; Officer Huang should have already returned.
As he called out.
"Heh heh,"
Officer Huang staggered out from the station.
"Officer Huang, I’ve caught a few miscreants for you. Taking advantage of becoming Evolutionary Zombies, they committed all sorts of evil, swaggering and threatening the public order of Huang City. As an ordinary citizen, I felt my life was in danger, and it took great effort to apprehend them."
