Chapter 199: Chapter 093: There are survivors spreading hope, hurry and join us!_4
The elderly Mr. Wang now carries change with him.
He had formed a habit of keeping change on his person.
Lin Fan took the ten yuan bill, hurried over to Su Xiaoxiao, bought two small cakes, gave one to Mr. Wang, and kept one for himself.
"Grandpa, have some cake," he said.
Mr. Wang, holding the cake, replied, "Tell me, Lin Fan, you just spent the money you earned on buying cakes, isn’t that a losing business?"
Lin Fan laughed, "It’s the first sale of the opening, a small cake as a gift."
Mr. Wang laughed, secretly sliding the cake into his pocket, "I want to take this cake back to enjoy with my wife. Lin Fan, you are not young anymore, I think it’s time for you to find a girlfriend. I find Su Xiaoxiao and Yan Nini both to be nice girls."
Lin Fan said, "Grandpa, you really think too highly of me. I only have a house in Sunshine District, my salary is just five thousand a month, I don’t even have a car, it’s not suitable. At my age, I feel like dating is like being slowly poisoned. I believe that with the current situation, I should strive to fight hard."
Mr. Wang: ...
In the afternoon.
As usual, Lin Fan was out looking for customers.
He looked up.
He saw two figures on a balcony.
The distance was a bit far, but he could still make out that they were two elderly people, one sitting in a wheelchair, the other accompanying by his side, peacefully gazing into the distance.
He thought for a moment and decided to go take a look.
Entering the district, he checked in and headed for the floor he saw them on. The elevator was broken, so he could only take the stairs. He heard some noise at the stairwell entrance and was startled by a wandering zombie, which he initially mistook for something else.
After clearing the zombie, he continued to climb the stairs.
Standing in front of a security door.
He knocked gently.
"Hello, my name is Lin Fan, is anybody home?" he softly called out.
There was no response after a moment of waiting.
He waited at the door.
Creak.
The security door opened, and an old lady with silvery hair greeted Lin Fan. Her cloudy eyes looked at him, not showing the panic one would imagine at the end of the world, but instead she seemed very calm.
"Whom are you looking for?" she asked.
Lin Fan replied, "Hello Grandma, I was walking by and saw you on the balcony. It’s the end of the world now, and there are a lot of zombies outside, so I came to see if you needed any help."
The old lady looked at Lin Fan and then invited him inside, "Come in to talk."
"Thank you."
The house wasn’t large but was very tidy. The floor glistened as though it had just been mopped. On the coffee table, a vase held flowers that were still vibrant, making the place feel like a warm and welcoming home.
"Grandma, the person on the balcony, is that Grandpa?" Lin Fan inquired.
The old lady smiled and walked toward the balcony, clearly to bring the old grandfather inside. During this time, he looked around at the home’s decor and saw an ash-gray photo album placed there, with an apple in front of what appeared to be a memorial portrait.
The person in the photo was smiling, very young, dressed in a police uniform that seemed tinged with age, as if from a distant time long ago.
There was the sound of a wheelchair, and a cat meowing.
The old lady came in pulling the wheelchair with an elderly man seated in it. In the old man’s lap was a plump orange cat, lazily curled up on his legs. Upon seeing Lin Fan, the stranger, the orange cat meowed.
Seeing Lin Fan looking at the photograph, the old lady said, "That’s my son. He has been dead for over forty years now. He was an Anti-drug Police officer. He was shot and killed in pursuit of drug traffickers."
Lin Fan looked silently at the photo. Over forty years ago, he hadn’t been born yet, but he had read online about that time when the drug traffickers were rampant, with many Anti-drug Police dying in the line of duty.
Those drug traffickers were very aggressive back then, and the country eradicated them at a great cost, maintaining the safety of the region.
"He is a hero," Lin Fan said.
"Yes," the old lady replied, "we both are proud of him. His sacrifice saved countless families, countless lives. His death was worthwhile."
Lin Fan felt the old lady’s emotions turn somewhat sorrowful and didn’t want to continue the topic, so he changed the subject, "Grandma, you and Grandpa, he... this."
When he looked at the old grandfather, he suddenly felt the man’s breath had faded. His eyes were closed, and his face bore a kind expression.
"He passed away not too long ago, peacefully," the old lady said while gently touching her husband’s face, her eyes filled with love.
Lin Fan experienced an indescribable feeling; he disliked seeing such things, but often these were the realities, "Grandma, it’s the end of the world now, and things are chaotic outside. Let me take care of you. My place is much safer."
Her son was a martyr, and Lin Fan felt that a martyr’s mother should not be allowed to shed tears as well as blood. His capabilities might not be strong, but looking after this old lady was certainly within his power.
He didn’t mention anything about being a real estate agent or selling houses.
It wasn’t appropriate.
The old lady said, "Young man, even though I don’t know what you do for a living, I can tell you’re a good young man, a good person. Never mind about me, this is my home, my husband’s home, and the home my son will one day return to. I can’t leave; I need to be with them. You should take her instead. Her name is Cui Hua; she’s the bond between me and my old man."
Lin Fan looked at the orange cat Cui Hua and then back at the old lady as if struck by some thought. He had a lot to say, but in the end... he held back.
The old lady turned and walked toward the kitchen, emerging with a bag of cat food in hand, "Okay?"
