Chapter 111: Chapter 078 What am I guarding, expecting, and pursuing_5

Reflecting back, the supermarket used to be bustling, filled with noises from the crowd, especially the sound of shopping cart wheels rolling, which was a signature of the supermarket.

Now, the quiet supermarket only echoed with the sound of Lin Fan pushing a shopping cart.

It had become eerily quiet.

The corners were dark, and the supermarket lights were out. Thankfully, the surrounding walls were floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing sunlight to shine in. Away from the dark corners, one could see the spacious shopping area.

The first and second floors were the messiest.

The third floor was relatively better.

Possibly the living survivors hadn’t thought about shopping on the third floor.

He saw some daily necessities, toothbrushes, toothpaste, body wash, shampoo, and toilet paper—essentials before the apocalypse, without which life always seemed to lack something.

But with the apocalypse here, who would care about these things? Being able to eat enough to live was already a luxury.

He placed these items in the shopping cart to stock up at home, to avoid coming out to buy them later.

Thud!

Thud!

Thud!

Sounds were coming.

He looked towards the end, where the emergency passage was. The sound was coming from there, but he didn’t care; hearing noises was normal.

He continued searching.

"Found it."

He arrived at the section for female products, with many brands and types. To Lin Fan, these items felt foreign, though he knew what they were for, he was not familiar with them.

"Sofy Super Sleep 420."

This should be for daily use.

He saw another type.

"Sofy Comfort Pants, enjoy ultimate sleep."

This must be for use during sleep at night.

He took some of each type.

Unknowingly, the shopping cart was full, but most were lightweight daily necessities.

"Tap tap..."

There were dense footsteps from the emergency passage, approaching from afar.

Suddenly.

He looked up at the ventilation duct, also hearing noises coming from there.

"Zombies?" Lin Fan was a bit doubtful.

"Hehe... roar."

There was a zombie’s growl from the ventilation duct, along with a child’s panic-stricken voice. Hearing this, he seemed to remember something, abruptly leaping up, plunging his palms into the ventilation duct, and ripping it open with a yank, creating a huge hole. Instantly, a figure attempted to crawl past quickly. It was a child’s face, full of panic. Seeing Lin Fan, the child’s pupils contracted sharply as if he hadn’t realized what was happening.

In the child’s cry of alarm, Lin Fan grabbed his collar and pulled him out of the duct.

Right after that, a zombie also fell from the ventilation duct. Lin Fan stepped back several steps and kicked out, smashing the zombie into the wall at the end. The back of its head collided with the wall, spraying thick blood everywhere.

The boy he pulled down struggled as if caught by a zombie, desperately thrashing, continually struggling, because he feared the zombie, feared being caught by it.

"Don’t be afraid, I am human," Lin Fan said.

These words clearly worked, as the boy stopped struggling and looked up at Lin Fan with rapid breaths. He clutched a bag in his hands, which contained bread and a few other sparse foods, his face was filthy and also had sticky zombie blood on it.

Bang!

The emergency passage door was violently smashed open, a group of horrifically howling zombies spotted fresh flesh and recklessly rushed towards Lin Fan.

The boy in front of Lin Fan, scared, backed away, "Run, run..."

The boy sprinted away, taking a few steps and looking back, catching a sight he might not dare to believe in his life. The person who pulled him from the emergency passage, holding a sword, was weaving through the crowd of zombies, striking each one with a blade or a kick, leaving the boy frozen in shock on the spot.

In his eyes, zombies were terribly frightening, truly exceptionally terrifying. He had seen too many people overpowered and bitten by zombies, eventually turning into them.

The scene before him was severely challenging his understanding.

Moments later.

The multitude of zombie corpses on the ground was somewhat bothersome to Lin Fan; it dirtied the supermarket’s environment, but he didn’t see it as a problem—it was the supermarket’s issue. He came here to shop, and as a customer, it was definitely the duty of supermarket security to help in dangerous situations.

Logically, the supermarket should be thanking him.

If he were injured by this mob, whoever could speak well would certainly demand a hefty compensation from the supermarket.

Lin Fan approached the boy, asking in confusion, "What are you doing here?"

The apocalypse was dangerous; even adults might not live comfortably, much less a child.

"I... I came to find food." The boy grasped his bag tightly, treasuring it, clearly nervous as if the food was a lifeline.

"Are you here alone?"

"Yes, I’m alone. Thank you for saving me, big brother. I’m going back now," the boy bowed to Lin Fan, then prepared to leave.

"Wait,"

Lin Fan eyed the boy. It was really strange for a child to run to the supermarket alone in such dangerous times.

The boy looked at Lin Fan nervously, even though the big brother before him had saved him, he still clutched his bag tightly, always on guard.

"It’s dangerous outside, I’ll take you home," Lin Fan said.

The boy looked at Lin Fan, and finally nodded. Even if he didn’t nod, there was nothing he could do—after all, he was just a child with no power to resist.
