Chapter 123: Chapter 123 – Stage of the Gods and the Replayed Scheme
In the realm of the gods, the sky never darkens. Golden light shines from every direction, giving the illusion of eternal peace untouched by time. But beneath the grandeur, something rotten had begun to grow.
The goddess who once helped Sylvia open a portal the one who welcomed her with a warm smile and sweet words now shed her mask. The softness in her face vanished, replaced by eyes as cold as frozen gems. Before the other gods seated in a circular row of thrones, she stepped into the center of the room.
The golden light, usually warm and comforting, now felt like knives piercing from every angle.
"At last... she’s returned to her world," the goddess said with a voice now filled with arrogance. "And those mortal races... they’ve begun to put their hopes in her, even though she’s the one who caused the zombie outbreak in their world. Truly, what foolish creatures."
Some of the other gods remained impassive. Some gazed at her calmly, others closed their eyes as if unwilling to be involved. But one thing was certain they were all listening.
"Their faith will grow amidst the chaos that girl created. So, isn’t this the perfect time for us to exploit the situation?" she continued. Her gaze swept the room, as if daring anyone to oppose her idea.
A goddess in a white robe with the symbol of the sun on her chest frowned. "You want to use them as tools? Again?"
"Tools?" the goddess chuckled. "Don’t pretend to be holy, Lumielle. We all know our power depends on their recognition. On their prayers and worship. Without that, we are nothing but shadows of a forgotten glory."
Another god, marked with a moon symbol and a deep voice, finally spoke. "But what if this world discovers our intentions? It would be dangerous for us if we’re exposed again. One of the reasons we were imprisoned here was because we did this once before and enraged the world."
Silence filled the room. Each god weighed their own interests.
Then the goddess spoke softly, almost whispering, "Let’s do it like before. Create a hero and let him unite the world. Let them place their faith in him. And when they kneel before him in admiration... we shall appear... as the new guides."
A wind-shrouded god added, "That would work well. If a hero is born, even the world will find it hard to resist, since it brings goodness to it."
Elsewhere, in a place filled with flowers and a massive tree at its center, sat a woman with soft green hair like a gentle mother watching the gods’ quarrel through a floating panel.
"They really never learn from their mistakes," she sighed, disappointed.
"Perhaps I should invite Sylvia back to this world to defeat them... or let her become the Demon King when the hero starts being manipulated again."
This being was the very Consciousness of the World, and the one who whispered to Sylvia as she passed through the portal back to her home world.
The green-haired woman slowly rose to her feet. Her gown, woven from flower petals, swayed gently with her steps across the sacred field that never withered. Each step was met with blooming petals, as if the world itself bowed to her presence.
"If they plan to create a hero," she whispered, looking up at the sky of her world, "then I will prepare a counterbalance. Not to destroy... but to keep the world sane."
From the highest branch of the great tree, a single fruit fell glowing dimly. It floated in the air before gently landing in her palm.
"I won’t summon Sylvia just yet. I’ll wait... until the gods truly reveal their corrupt intentions."
She closed her eyes.
Back in the sacred chamber of the gods, the goddess who had first spoken still stood proudly at the center of the forum. She didn’t know she was being watched. Or perhaps she did... and simply didn’t care.
"We must act quickly," she said. "Chaos is the most fertile ground for faith. The longer we wait, the greater the risk of being forgotten."
Lumielle, the sun goddess, clenched her fists. "But I won’t stand idly by if you start sacrificing people just for worship."
"Oh? Will you stop us?" mocked the first goddess with a sly smile. "You? The so-called protector of mankind, who couldn’t even save your own race when the world collapsed?"
Anger was clear on Lumielle’s face, but she gave no reply.
The moon god sighed quietly. "There’s no point in arguing. What matters is unity of vision."
The wind god nodded. "Then we’re agreed. Create the hero... and rebuild our influence."
The first goddess smiled in satisfaction, then stepped back. Behind her, a shadow shaped like a pair of purple wings slowly unfurled. A sly aura cloaked her steps. She knew... victory wasn’t just about power, but also timing and perception.
"Go ahead and hide your intentions behind the word ’hope.’ The world won’t realize... until it’s too late."
Yet some gods and goddesses still wished to oppose her... silently.
Meanwhile, in the human world...
Someone a boy with messy brown hair and a frail body was waking from a long slumber. He was surrounded by a soft glow and faint voices of priests crying out that a "heavenly sign" had appeared. On his forehead, a strange symbol glowed faintly a circle with five crossing lines, a sigil never seen before.
The priests knelt.
One whispered, "He... is the chosen one."
But among those bowing in reverence, one hidden eye in the shadows remained defiant. A girl dressed in black stood among the crowd, smiling faintly.
"So... they’re playing the hero game again."
She turned and vanished into the darkness, her shadow never touching the ground.
The girl in black walked lightly through the narrow alleys of the underground city, where light barely reached. No one noticed her or perhaps no one could. Each step she took made no sound, and her shadow remained still, refusing to follow her movements.
Behind her calm face, her thoughts raced.
"If they’re repeating the same old game... then I shall prepare my own pieces as well."
Suddenly, her eyes turned to the ceiling of the cavern, faintly glittering with tiny crystals. There, she saw a strange glimmer like a fragment of the sky that had ended up in the wrong place.
That light... was calling to her.
But instead of approaching, she smiled wider, as if she had already predicted the next move in this game.
"Let’s see... who bares their fangs first. Their hero... or the monster I will unleash."
Her steps vanished once more into the darkness, leaving behind a faint echo one that no human ear could hear.
