Chapter 110: Chapter 110 – Language, Breakfast, and the Bacon Idea
That morning, I woke up like usual no alarm, no dreams, and of course, no sleepiness. As an undead, I didn’t need sleep in the biological sense, but it turns out lying on a soft bed all night could still feel incredibly pleasant. Warm, soft, and cozy... maybe even too cozy.
I slowly rose from the bed, stretching even though no muscles were sore. A habit left over from my former life. Then I walked over to the window and gently opened it. The morning breeze greeted my face, carrying the scent of dew and the faint aroma of toasted bread from afar.
The city was already coming alive.
Footsteps, clattering wagons, and faint conversations could be heard from the street below. Vendors were beginning to open their stalls, setting up small tents and arranging their goods with practiced hands. Children ran around laughing. Hunters walked past in full gear, ready to take on their daily quests.
I pulled a small chair near the window, then sat down and crossed my legs. Just enjoying the quiet morning.
But as I listened to the people’s conversations outside, something strange happened. I... understood.
"They say the mercenaries from the west will start moving next week." "Seriously? Is this going to be a major war?" "I heard there’s tension between the vampire kingdom and the human kingdom. No official announcement yet, though..."
I listened carefully. Sentence after sentence entered my ears... and I understood them. Not just guessing from context or translating word for word I truly understood the language.
I tilted my head, trying to remember. When I first arrived in this world, I couldn’t understand anyone. The only exception had been Velthya, who could speak to me thanks to a special ability. But now? I understood everything naturally, as if this language had become part of me.
"Since when...?" I muttered softly.
No response from Alicia or Stacia this time. Maybe they hadn’t noticed either. Or... could this be a side effect of my system’s evolution? My system had undergone massive changes since it evolved, though quests were still rare. Maybe... as part of those changes, I had been synchronized with the world’s language.
I sighed and leaned back in the chair.
"Well... just being able to understand is enough," I murmured. "No need to overthink where it came from."
After sitting quietly for a while, I got up and prepared to head out. My stomach wasn’t "hungry" like a human’s, but I could still enjoy food. In fact, now that I was a zombie, I seemed even more sensitive to taste. Maybe because I knew how precious those little things were.
I went downstairs and stepped out of the inn. The bustling morning greeted me. Along the street, vendors had already set up their stalls. Compared to Velthya’s city, which was more orderly and calm, this place was much livelier and more colorful. A mix of aromas filled the air: the sweetness of toasted bread, the savory scent of grilled meat, the fresh tang of fruits.
My steps stopped in front of a fruit stall. A young demon girl tended it. There, I saw a fruit that resembled an apple round, bright red, and looking fresh.
"These two," I said.
The girl swiftly wrapped up the two fruits and handed them over. I gave her a few small coins, then continued on toward a nearby bakery. The shop sold various types of bread, from round loaves filled with sweet beans to long rolls sprinkled with sesame seeds.
I picked a plain loaf big, soft, and warm.
While biting into the apple and carrying the bread, I looked around and noticed one strange thing: there was no bacon.
It’s not that I loved bacon or anything, but... well, breakfast without bacon just felt incomplete. The only thing resembling meat were a few sausages displayed at one stall. I approached it, and the vendor an Imp with purple skin and a worn-out apron greeted me.
"These sausages, what meat are they made from?" I asked.
"Giant boar, miss," he said proudly. "Rank C animal meat. Not a monster. That’s why it’s a bit pricey."
I nodded in understanding. There was a difference between animals and monsters. Monsters like goblins, orcs, or kobolds had magic affinity and natural aggression. Animals though potentially strong lacked magical elements and weren’t too wild unless provoked.
I bought a few sausages and then asked, "If I want to buy the meat whole, where should I go?"
"For that, you should visit either the guild or the butcher. But I’d say the butcher is more practical. They’ve already separated the meat cuts, so you can choose what you need."
"Thanks for the advice."
Afterward, I headed to the mentioned place. The butcher’s stall was tucked into a market corner, manned by a large, bald demon. A single horn protruded from the left side of his head, and his eyes were sharp, as if sizing up every passerby.
As I approached, he looked at me intently. "You’re... undead, aren’t you?" he asked suddenly. "But not a vampire. What race are you?"
I smiled slightly. "Zombie."
His eyebrows rose. "Ah? A zombie? Wow... so zombies can be self-aware too, huh? Well, skeletons can talk these days, so maybe it’s not that weird, hahaha!"
I chuckled as well. At least he wasn’t discriminatory.
"So, what do you want to buy?"
"Giant boar belly, ten kilograms."
"Alright." He went into the back of the stall and began weighing and cutting the meat with impressive skill. Before long, he returned and handed me a neatly wrapped bundle.
"Ten silvers."
I paid him, then paused for a moment. If this is belly meat... maybe I could turn it into bacon?
Before I became a zombie, I had watched a video about how to make bacon from pork belly. The process was simple salt, pepper, sugar, and time. The taste... maybe I could bring that flavor back to my tongue.
I went in search of a spice vendor.
First, I bought a bag of coarse salt pretty expensive at five silvers for around two hundred grams. Then I bought one hundred grams of black pepper, which was even more expensive at fifty silvers.
Lastly, I looked for sugar... and that’s where the trouble began. White sugar seemed to be a rare item in this city. The seller, an old dark elf with a lazy expression, looked at me from behind his round glasses.
"Fifty grams of sugar. Eighty silvers," he said flatly.
"Seriously?"
He didn’t answer. I sighed and finally handed over the coins. It felt like bribery, but... well, I needed the ingredient.
With all the ingredients in hand, I returned to the inn, climbing the stairs back to my room with light steps. Once inside, I laid out all my purchases on the table.
But before experimenting with bacon-making, I sat in the chair again and enjoyed my morning meal apple, warm bread, and giant boar sausage. The sausage flavor was strong, slightly sweet with a gentle smoky aroma. Not bad at all.
After breakfast, I finally stood up and began preparing... Sylvia-style bacon.
