Chapter 2637: Chapter 2639: Settling Accounts
"If we had known it would come to this, why did we take those initial steps?"
Lin Yi sat back on the big plank bed, speaking in a flat tone.
The three beaten men lay on the ground, their bodies trembling uncontrollably.
Fear filled their emotions.
Just as Lin Yi said, given their state, even if they tried to report him, there would be no evidence.
"It was Mr. William who sent us."
"Mr. William?"
Lin Yi murmured with a frown, "I need to know his specific information."
"We don’t know the specifics either; he always sends someone to communicate with us and protects himself very well."
His sharp gaze swept over the three like a knife blade.
"You’d better tell me everything you know, don’t hide it. It’s better for everyone this way."
"No, no, no, please don’t use force. We really don’t know," the short, blond man said in terror:
"We’re just the thugs responsible for executing tasks and getting the bounty. We truly don’t know anything about his information."
"Alright, I’ll grudgingly believe you for today," Lin Yi said:
"But let me give you a brief law lesson. You will have to stay here for at least 15 days, so if I want, I can meet you anytime within the next 15 days. If I find out that you are lying, I have a way to make you disappear from Earth, and even God can’t save you."
"Understood, understood."
Lin Yi didn’t stay long, getting up to leave the room.
During the questioning just now, he could tell they weren’t lying.
It seemed unlikely to extract useful information from them.
This cast a shadow over Lin Yi’s heart.
Such cautiousness from the mastermind wasn’t a good sign.
Investigating specific information wouldn’t be easy.
The only hope now is the person he stabbed.
He had to try his luck there.
After leaving, Lin Yi went to Wang Shijie’s office.
When Wang Shijie saw Lin Yi coming in, he got up to welcome him to the sofa and poured him a cup of tea.
"How’s the situation?"
"A bunch of scapegoats; they know nothing." Lin Yi took a sip of tea and said:
"Secretary Wang, where’s the injured person now?"
"In the Armed Police Hospital, do you want to see him?"
"I have that in mind," Lin Yi said:
"Can you help me contact the dean? We might need his cooperation."
"That’s no problem," Wang Shijie said:
"You can go over now. The dean is Guo Changmin. I’ll call him to meet you."
"Thanks, Secretary Wang."
After a brief chat, Lin Yi drove to the Armed Police Hospital.
Upon getting out of the car, Lin Yi saw a middle-aged man standing at the entrance, looking around, and guessed his identity.
"You must be Dean Guo."
Lin Yi walked over, offering his hand.
"Are you Mr. Lin?"
Lin Yi nodded with a smile and took out his credentials:
"These are my credentials. I’m with the Security Department, here to investigate something. I hope you can cooperate."
"Secretary Wang has already told me about your situation. Rest assured, I will fully cooperate with you."
"Then I must trouble Dean Guo," Lin Yi said:
"Secretary Wang’s people should have brought in a foreigner. I’d like to ask about his condition."
"Fortunately, his internal organs weren’t injured, or it would have been difficult to handle."
"I’ll go see him."
"Alright, follow me."
...
Room 408.
Hunter was lying in bed, and a nurse was administering an anti-inflammatory IV drip.
He seemed out of danger and in good spirits, though his body was bandaged and he couldn’t move recklessly.
Hunter wasn’t staying in a private room, but he had booked the whole room.
A young woman in blue jeans and a white T-shirt sat on another bed.
It was his companion, Lilith.
"How are you feeling now?"
After the nurse left, Lilith asked.
"No matter what, I’ll soon reach D-level. This minor injury won’t kill me."
"What did Mr. William say?"
"He said to withdraw for now and put this matter aside."
Lost in thought, Hunter muttered to himself:
"The Shangqing Palace operation failed, and the hospital operation also failed miserably. I suspect the old guy must have hired help in advance."
"That’s possible," Lilith said:
"Given the current situation, if we proceed like before, we’ll suffer more losses. We need to retreat and regroup first."
"Has Mr. William arranged things here?"
"Rest assured, he’s hired the best lawyer. Everything is taken care of," Lilith said:
"They’ll be detained for 15 days before being released, just in time for you to recuperate, then you can leave together."
"I’m not going back. You take the others and go first."
Lilith glanced at Hunter, "Do you have another plan?"
"After suffering such a severe injury, I won’t let him off. Even if I don’t kill him, I want to pay him back with that stab!"
"But he’s not weak. Such actions would be unwise," Lilith calmly said.
"I think you’re overestimating him," Hunter replied:
"If he’s really that capable, why did he need help?"
Clearly, neither Hunter nor Lilith knew that the person who acted in the hospital was Lin Yi.
Otherwise, they wouldn’t have made such a reckless decision.
"You can’t judge like that; always prepare for the worst and then look for solutions."
"You’re right, but I think it doesn’t matter. Even if he’s strong, one bullet is enough to take him down."
Lilith didn’t argue, as Hunter made a valid point.
"I have a Browning here. I’ll leave it to you when I go."
"No problem." Hunter grinned coldly, "Let’s see how arrogant he is when there’s a gun to his head!"
"But be careful. This is China; law enforcement is strict, unlike the streets of Chigo."
"Don’t worry. No one discovered it was me who acted against that old guy before," Hunter said smugly:
"Trust me, darling, I’m a professional."
"Screw you, don’t call me that again, or I’ll shoot you."
"Haha, I love it when you get angry."
Lilith ignored Hunter, stood up, and said:
"I have other matters to attend to. Stay here, and call if you need anything."
"No problem. Safe travels."
Lilith adjusted her clothes, preparing to leave.
Then came the "click" of the door lock, stopping her in her tracks.
The room door opened, and Lin Yi and Guo Changmin entered from outside, locking the door behind them.
Seeing Lin Yi, Hunter and Lilith’s expressions changed dramatically.
In unison, they exclaimed:
"It’s you!"
