Chapter 192: Chapter 122: When a Rascal Becomes a Marquis and Might Be Granted a Marriage
Gu Shanhai saw Atilis again during the sacrificial and coronation ceremonies. He was seated on the throne, with the kings of the conquered kingdoms all kneeling on the ground. After appointing figurehead princes, they awaited their exile to barren lands, although more likely, they would perish en route.
Without the divine right of kings, Atilis was the supreme Priest, in control of the entire Druid Sect.
And these kings were merely symbols of his legitimate rule.
The current Atilis was no longer the immature youth of before. Although he was only twenty, after enduring wars of blood and fire, and the political scheming of both open and secret entanglements, along with destiny upon him, he seemed like a monstrous amalgamation of power and politics. His emotions did not show on his face; the balance of imperial artifice seemed perfected.
At this moment, Gu Shanhai even began to doubt whether noble blood truly carried something innate.
"Indeed, my intervention has spawned another monster. The Red Dragon King, who breaks free from destiny, is indeed terrifying. It is unknown whether his path of conquest will ever halt."
The answer was certainly negative; Atilis would not stop his stride. Though he had conquered this world, there was another filled with wights to be faced.
Perhaps even a Hell nearing proximity.
The thought of a battle between the feared Demon Gods and the Red Dragon King was somewhat bizarre.
By this point, the Dragon Blood in Atilis’s veins had reached the level of Ancient Dragons. As a King and conqueror, there was no resource he lacked. Enhancing the density or grade of his Dragon Blood was simplicity itself.
Even Kurus Brass might no longer be a match for Atilis.
"It would be a close struggle..."
"It’s like comparing a half pound of scrap iron to eight ounces of gold!"
It was simple; Gu Shanhai was trying to become stronger, but how could he hope to compare with Atilis? Not only was he a genius, but he had mentorship, amassed resources, various battle experiences, better equipment, and greater forces. How could he contend with such a person?
To challenge Atilis would be akin to opposing the whole world. Just the thought of countless mighty warriors swarming towards him made it clear that he stood no chance.
Outside of Druids and Knights, Atilis had also subjugated Wizards, earned the loyalty of barbarians dwelling in snowfields and mountains, and gained the allegiance of female warriors from islands and rainforests. His power had swelled to its zenith.
Could Gu Shanhai take on ten or eight, or even a hundred?
The entire process of sacrifice, coronation, and the bestowing of titles was incredibly tedious. Gu Shanhai nearly dozed off, but he forced himself to stay alert until he was finally conferred the title of Marquis and granted a very fertile land. Then, he returned to the ranks.
As a Minister of Dragon, Gu Shanhai was indeed a noble with true control over his land. Unlike nobles from other lands who surrendered later, merely keeping their noble titles was considered fortunate. To wish for lands was fine, as long as one had exceptional merits, but the lands given were not their old territories and required new delineations.
This was all a process of restructuring and redistributing benefits; how could it be conducted according to the whims of foreign nobles?
Did anyone think that the sword at Atilis’s waist was not sharp? Probably nobody wished to test whether their skull was harder than the sword.
After the ceremony, Atilis discreetly summoned Kay, Morico, Merlin, and Gu Shanhai. There was no great fanfare.
It seemed to be for political consultation. Gu Shanhai remained silent as he knew little. His accomplishments existed, but they weren’t in political affairs; rather, they were in the development of agriculture and industry, such as increasing food yield and advances in smelting technology.
"Minister Shanhai, don’t you have anything to say?" Atilis noticed Gu Shanhai’s reticence and thus spoke.
"Your Majesty, I don’t understand what’s being discussed," Gu Shanhai said, slightly embarrassed, before adding, "These years, I’ve dealt with logistics and development; all matters of state have been handled by Minister Kay for me."
"..." Kay was speechless. How could he be so brazen?
Atilis was momentarily taken aback, not expecting this but then remembered the reports from Kay and the others. It seemed to be true, so was Gu Shanhai a non-traditional minister among them?
But he was satisfied. Gu Shanhai shunned power, served the country and the people, well and good.
"Yes, let Kay manage these matters with you from now on, Minister Shanhai. You can then focus on your work better. If you need anything, you can come directly to me." Atilis’s intention was clear, essentially stripping Gu Shanhai of his powers but granting him a privilege akin to executing before reporting, which of course required Atilis’s approval.
"There is indeed one matter: I have foreseen something that could strengthen the entire kingdom, and I need your help with this, Your Majesty," Gu Shanhai seized the moment. There would be no suitable time later.
"Oh? It seems Minister Shanhai’s predictive abilities are now on par with Merlin’s. But since you’re paying with your life, use this power sparingly. Later, I will have a servant send some life-extending treasures to your residence." Atilis’s words were one thing, but his implication was clear; avoid unnecessary prophecies and use them for beneficial things only.
