Chapter 164: Chapter 108: The Green Knight Merged with the Tree
Having bypassed the dense sea-fog that concealed the Sea People Manaklavi from afar, both Gu Shanhai and Black Horse actually breathed a sigh of relief.
Black Horse had considered running away on the road, but remembering the hunting mark that Gu Shanhai had placed on him and knowing that the other could strike from afar—even a single punch had left him flattened and had broken several of his teeth—the horse didn’t want to gamble with his own life.
The boat could still sail without him; but without his life, he was nothing.
Lying on the boat, Gu Shanhai detected the creature’s inner conflicts and hesitations. Unfortunately, his ability to probe thoughts was mere second level, not the fifth level that would allow deeper insight, so he could only grasp surface thoughts.
He was only able to understand so clearly thanks to his multitude of transcendent magic skills, which made his thought detection far exceed the capabilities of the second level.
For a normal second-tier ability, the detection would have been limited.
After they had moved away, the ocean remained boundless. Gu Shanhai had foreseen this and never believed simply bypassing Nakravi would lead them directly to their destination; there was likely still a great distance to cover.
Without a corresponding scale, Gu Shanhai had previously undertaken a Prophetic Divination, the result predicting he would reach the island three sunsets later.
So, the first day’s sunset hadn’t even arrived; how could he possibly have arrived at the destination.
The sky gradually darkened, and the sea was calm. Gu Shanhai finally spoke, allowing Black Horse to rest. "You’ve been pulling all day, to say you’re not tired would definitely be false." With the speed at which the other party traveled, they were only slightly slower than his normal sailing boat, which wasn’t powered by oars but by gasoline, hence much faster.
After climbing aboard, Black Horse bore a long bruise across his body, almost embedded into the flesh.
Still, his physical condition was quite resilient, and he had already begun to recover.
"Eat with Little White or have some fodder?" Gu Shanhai asked. Hearing this, Little White looked alert and accelerated his eating pace.
"Why are you so anxious? Guarding your food isn’t a good habit." Gu Shanhai corrected Little White’s bad behavior.
Reluctantly, Little White pushed his food bowl a bit, indicating that he could share.
Seeing this, Black Horse was exasperated—who would eat that fodder?
Though it seemed abundant and smelled quite appetizing, he wasn’t herbivorous.
"Meat, I need meat," Black Horse stated without hesitation.
He understood that, although Gu Shanhai sometimes spoke incomprehensibly, he was not a stingy person.
Gu Shanhai reached out, and an unknown type of fish leapt out, already dead when it hit the deck, its body pierced by some sharp blade.
"Is that enough? There’s more if it’s not. You don’t need cooked food, right?" Gu Shanhai hesitated, then added.
Without a word, Black Horse embraced the fish—almost as big as himself—and began gnawing on it. His teeth, shattered by Gu Shanhai earlier in the day, had regrown somewhat; he might struggle with hard bones but had no issue chewing through the fish’s meat.
"Can you eat a bit slower? It’s splattering everywhere..." Gu Shanhai was speechless, Black Horse’s manner of eating was ferociously uncivilized, entirely unlike his subdued demeanor after being subdued.
After hearing Gu Shanhai’s words, Black Horse did tone down his eating, but it remained a fearsome sight.
The fish scales were extremely hard; normal blades couldn’t pierce them, but they seemed non-existent under Black Horse’s resurgent teeth—he could have easily broken bones if it were a human.
Black Horse inwardly reckoned it was good that he hadn’t fled. If he had, Gu Shanhai would likely be having stew. Checking his wound while eating, he noted the fish had died instantly, dead before its blood could even mingle with the sea—fished out immediately after the fatal strike.
By his own conjecture, Black Horse didn’t believe he could have dodged this unknown Divine Art. Indeed, in his eyes, it was nothing short of a divine technique.
With this single encounter, Black Horse extinguished any current thoughts of escape, postponing them until perhaps a moment when Gu Shanhai might be distracted by other adversaries.
After swallowing the fish, bones and all, his skeletal strength restored, his shattered teeth had fully regrown.
"Go, wash below, you reek of fish. This sea breeze blows it right into my face as if funneled directly into my forehead," Gu Shanhai said with a hint of disgust.
Black Horse gave an almost human smile before jumping into the sea to scrub off the blood and fishy smell, then climbed back aboard.
"Tonight, you sleep at the stern. Don’t grind your teeth, snore, or fart, or I’ll kick you off. You can resume pulling the boat tomorrow morning," Gu Shanhai added.
He clearly understood Black Horse’s thoughts and fears. Kael Elves were nefarious creatures known for murder and cannibalism, so it was better to occasionally treat them harshly than leniently, as they could instantly turn on you once they detected weakness.
But Gu Shanhai was far from weak, and having made sure Black Horse had suffered enough, he was now quite tame.
As night deepened, Black Horse slept at the stern, untroubled by the cold—a transcendent being like him wouldn’t catch a cold, especially since he originated from even colder seawaters.
