Chapter 139: Chapter 95: The Banshee Crying by the Lake_2
Whether or not one can catch up is one thing, and whether to pursue or not is another.
Gu Shanhai naturally didn’t hesitate to choose to pursue, as he had to return anyway.
Through this battle, he realized something— the outside world was truly dangerous.
He indeed wanted to seek revenge on the Rahan Family, the Esoeron family, and people like Merlin, but the precondition was that he had to have enough strength; otherwise, being a weakling and daring to confront the enemy head-on would mean he’d be the one to die.
The Fierce General carried Gu Shanhai, speeding much faster than a horse, as there was no need to consider stamina, only Mana.
With its own strength already formidable, there was naturally nothing to worry about.
As they moved forward, the night gradually fell, and the intermittent signals became much clearer, evidently getting closer to Ava’s location.
"We need to find a place to rest; the night... isn’t great for traveling."
The Fierce General didn’t have much of a problem traveling at night, but Gu Shanhai couldn’t bear it, as he was already wounded, and the jostling indeed made it difficult to press on with the injuries.
Thus, he needed to rest properly and recover.
Quickly, he found an abandoned wooden cabin, which seemed like a lumberjack’s hut, though the reason for its abandonment was unknown.
After entering, Gu Shanhai took out a lighting device to illuminate the space.
"The house hasn’t been lived in for some time; looks like it needs a bit of cleaning up." Gu Shanhai wasn’t too demanding; it was fine as long as they could stay temporarily.
After using simple magic from the Magic Domain to clean, the dust and cobwebs were all taken care of, instantly making the cabin clean, although it wasn’t tidy, as he hadn’t taken the time to organize it.
"Fierce General, you stand guard tonight. Remember to wake me if anything happens," Gu Shanhai planned to get some sleep, as it was the best way to recover.
The Fierce General didn’t respond, but Gu Shanhai understood that it got the message—of low intelligence but capable of understanding simple instructions to wake him if necessary.
Gu Shanhai fell asleep in a second, which was quite simple for him; however, he didn’t enter a deep sleep, as he didn’t dare to sleep too soundly, even with the Fierce General standing guard.
"Wuu— wu wu—"
During sleep, a low, hoarse weeping carried by the wind reached Gu Shanhai’s ears, and he suddenly opened his eyes, the bloodshot revealing his irked mood.
"What the hell is weeping, and doing it so hideously!" Gu Shanhai was extremely annoyed, having just fallen asleep for less than an hour before this occurred.
Rubbing his temples, Gu Shanhai heard the crying that came with the wind, not only unabated upon his waking but becoming even more daring.
Previously, the crying was merely unpleasant, but now it had turned into a terrifying sound, a piercing feeling in his ears.
"This is utterly trying my patience." Gu Shanhai felt helpless, then performed a Prophetic Divination, which still indicated minor misfortune.
Next, he naturally used the prophetic vision to check out the sound to see what it wanted—if the entity wasn’t powerful, Gu Shanhai planned to kill it and use it for materials.
He was certain that this thing was definitely not human, as no human could weep so horribly and terrifyingly.
In an instant, a vision emerged, showing a woman in a green dress not far from the riverbank, washing bloodstained clothes whilst crying.
Gu Shanhai could ignore the fact that the woman was washing bloodstained clothes and crying in the middle of the night—it could have been someone who had just killed her husband and was dealing with the aftermath.
However, Gu Shanhai couldn’t ignore the ugly teeth, the swollen red eyes, the single nostril on the woman, and importantly, her feet, which had frog-like webbing.
"A howling banshee? Who’s going to die around here? It isn’t me, right?" Gu Shanhai recognized this creature; ugly indeed, but a genuine female fairy, yes, the same species as the fairy who would later send the sword to Atilis Sitra Lake, just not from the same family.
This creature generally only appeared near those about to die, and now, still washing her clothes, she was probably going to wail under the window soon.
It’s the kind that cries while combing her hair, just like a lunatic.
Luckily, this thing isn’t dangerous, and not just anyone can enjoy the crying of a banshee.
"I don’t remember there being any of these in Deer Plain, so maybe I should capture one and take it back?" Gu Shanhai’s first thought was no longer to slaughter it for materials but to capture it for breeding.
Although the banshee was ugly and her ability was nothing but making people mourn, she was still a treasured creature that wasn’t commonly seen; who knew, maybe her cries had other uses.
"First, let’s sneak over and see who she’s mourning for. Is there anyone else nearby?" Gu Shanhai put away the Fierce General and tiptoed towards the lakeside.
The lake was actually not close to his cabin, but with the ability to locate bodies of water, Gu Shanhai easily found the place.
From a distance, he saw the banshee washing clothes in the moonlight by the lake.
Whether she was actually cleaning them is another matter, but she was certainly putting a lot of effort into it.
Crouching nearby for well over half an hour, Gu Shanhai almost dozed off as the other party still didn’t make much of a move, just continued to cry incessantly; fortunately, he had grown accustomed to it after hearing it so much.
"No, I can’t wait any longer. I’ll fall asleep. I must act first." Gu Shanhai decided not to wait, no matter who she was mourning for.
He picked up a stone from the side and then took out a burlap sack.
The sack was taken from the warehouse of the portable laboratory and was meant for storing materials; it just came in handy.
Stealthily approaching, he was about to hit the banshee on the back of her head with the stone when she suddenly stopped washing and, in a very creepy way, turned her head around. Her ugly face seemed to look at Gu Shanhai with some confusion.
"Misunderstanding, misunderstanding, I’m just passing by," Gu Shanhai said somewhat sheepishly and quickly dropped the stone.
The banshee didn’t speak, just slowly stood up. She was already quite large while sitting and washing clothes, but standing up, she was three meters tall.
At that moment, Gu Shanhai realized that his burlap sack was probably not big enough to catch a banshee of this size.
She silently looked at Gu Shanhai and then took out a comb, brushing her hair while crying and looking at him, as if he was about to be carried out for burial.
"Can we, like, change the tune here? We’re neither kin nor kith, and you’re putting on this scene—it’s so convincing I almost thought you were my loyal son or grandson..."
She was crying with such fervor that Gu Shanhai couldn’t guarantee his descendants could match her filial piety.
’Damn, crying at me means I’m the one going to have bad luck?’ Gu Shanhai realized. Even though it was a minor omen, why did it seem like he was about to die?
’Forget it, let’s not worry about this now, first let’s take the banshee away.’
Gu Shanhai was a very pragmatic person; whether it was dangerous or not was a concern for later. The priority was capturing the creature.
So, he stuffed the sack back into the portable laboratory and replaced it with a large aluminum alloy case, which was originally used to store equipment but was now being repurposed.
The banshee seemed taken aback by this move, and then she saw Gu Shanhai pulling out a hemp rope as thick as a baby’s arm.
"Seeing as you’re crying with so much filial piety for me, I feel like we have a connection, so I’d like to invite you to my place as a guest," Gu Shanhai said, holding the rope and inviting her very kindly.
The malice was almost overflowing; even if the banshee couldn’t understand, she got the idea. So, she turned around and tried to run immediately.
But Gu Shanhai had everything ready, and letting her escape now would have been a waste of effort.
"I’m a very hospitable person, you know. That move you just made’s hurt my feelings, so today whether you leave or not, you’re leaving," Gu Shanhai said with a nasty tone as he grabbed the banshee and stuffed her into the aluminum alloy case.
