Chapter 30: First Boss Fight

"Alright," Xu Tao consolidated their talks. "So, the ones who will fight the next monster are me and Jehanne. Arthur will stand by in the middle just in case something happens. As for the rest..."

He slowly pointed at each of them before sending them to the top of the wall, one on every major direction. "Keep watch and alert us where the next monster—the Boss—will appear."

The way Xu Tao delegated tasks was to the point and efficient.

Everyone moved without delay, heading to their posts. Thankfully, none of them were tired... No, none of them had participated in the fight anyway. There’s no way they were tired.

"Right, Pepe...?" Xu Tao recalled his little pet and looked around.

However, it was nowhere in sight.

"If it’s your little squire, he’s down in the middle of the field, busy collecting the remaining loot boxes," Jehanne said right away.

Hearing this, he nodded. "I see. Then let’s leave it alone for now..."

Time was running out, after all.

It was then that the "five-minute break" after the 19th batch of the wave was over, and the final, 20th batch was summoned.

"...!"

But just then, Xu Tao realized he had been too optimistic about all this.

The moment the "Boss Monster" was summoned, he felt it right away. It was in the same battlefield where Xu Tao and Jehanne fought earlier. Its presence was so overwhelming, it was hard to try and ignore it.

So powerful, in fact, that the ones on top of the walls ended up frozen in fear, unable to even perform their duties properly.

But Xu Tao couldn’t blame them.

Even he, who was once a powerhouse, was sweating bullets just from the monster’s presence alone. Seeing his current state, a certain someone couldn’t help but raise his voice.

"Do you both still think just the two of you can handle it...?"

Arthur, who wasn’t as intimidated as the rest, asked with a stiff smile.

"Honestly, I’m not sure about this myself..." Even Jehanne was having second thoughts.

Xu Tao, on the other hand, didn’t reply at once, but instead rushed toward the nearest wall and stood on top of it, startling Little Wenwen who was there. He gazed at the summoned monster, watching its figure intently.

"..."

As he stared at it for a good while, the system’s recognition system began to work. The monster’s name and its level appeared on top of its head, but when he read it—

[Dimensional Anomaly (Giant Humanoid Bug Type) - Level 350]

It was a name... with a pure black background and blood-red text. A first time, too, for Xu Tao to see.

He learned from observing that the system’s color scheme changed depending on the enemy’s strength—or in this case, level. Lighter colors meant weaker enemies, while darker ones meant stronger monsters.

And this one? It was literally black. Nothing could get darker than that.

"Fuck, it’s even higher in level than Jehanne and Arthur..." Xu Tao cursed, feeling hopeless.

The two UR units, Jehanne d’Arc and King Arthur Pendragon, both were at level 250. The raw number of their stats were exactly the same too, so it could be said they were just as strong as each other.

Which means, the monster before them was 40% higher in level, and most likely several times stronger than the earlier monsters...

"Wait... Pepe!"

Just then, Xu Tao realized his green buddy was frozen in fear about twenty meters away from the monster. The little guy was unlucky, being there right when the boss was summoned.

Xu Tao, not knowing why exactly, rushed to save his buddy.

He jumped down from the wall and propelled himself forward like a bullet, cutting the air as he went. As soon as he reached Pepe’s side, he grabbed the little pumpkin and—

"Stand back...!"

Threw it away, doing a baseball pitch toward the walls.

"PUUUIIIIiiiii...!"

With his strength, the little pumpkin flew toward the wall and was caught by Little Wenwen properly—though due to the residual impact, both fell toward the ground, disappearing from the top of the wall.

But to a cultivator, a jump of about 5 meters shouldn’t be anything to worry about. They should be safe.

"Anyway..." He had rushed in without a plan, just desperate to save his little mascot. Now, he stood just a few steps away from the enemy. "Hey, big guy. Wanna play?"

He checked the monster’s body.

Just like the previous monsters, this one too was of the same type. It had ashen-gray skin and emaciated limbs. But unlike the previous ones, this one had eyes... Blood-red eyes, four of them arranged vertically only on the right side—asymmetric.

And to add, just like its name suggested, it was large.

If the previous ones were human-sized, then this one was as big as a building.

It stood about as tall as the walls Xu Tao had made, with a torso as thick as a mixer truck. Just from a glance, one could tell how tough it was.

"Oh!"

Suddenly, it raised its fist, as big as he was, and punched toward the ground.

Xu Tao knew better than to try blocking it, of course. He quickly used a movement technique, shifting to a location 10 meters away. The place he had been just moments ago, however, exploded... literally.

Dust and earth flew into the air, scattering, creating some sort of smokescreen that hid the monster’s figure. But with how powerful its presence was, mere dust wouldn’t be able to make Xu Tao lose sight of it.

He saw movement within the dust and quickly used the same movement technique—Ground Shrink—and evacuated to a new place 10 meters away from his previous spot. He was gradually distancing himself from the enemy—but his plan didn’t seem to be going well.

SCREEECH!

The monster raised a loud roar, like a cockroach’s furious cry. It was irritating and unnerving, basically an attack in its own right.

But that wasn’t the problem.

"...Shit!"

The problem was that it began to run toward Xu Tao, both its arms extended forward, as if to catch him. Given how large its body was, just one step was enough to cover the distance he made earlier. And that step literally took an instant to make.

Xu Tao dodged the hands. A simple backstep, before using Ground Shrink once more.

But to his surprise, just as he moved the same distance as earlier once more—the monster’s hands were already before his eyes, now curled into a fist. There was no time to cast Ground Shrink again; he could only raise his sword in defense, no matter how futile it might be.

BAM! CRACK!

Xu Tao... was saved.

"Sir Tao, stand back!" Jehanne, who arrived just in time, shouted with urgency. "I can’t hold on for long!"

In the nick of time, she jumped between Xu Tao and the monster, stabbing her spear into the ground and blocking the punch. But that alone caused the spear’s shaft to crack. Not only that, she was even pushed back by a foot, dragging a long canal across the ground.

Xu Tao didn’t delay.

He knew he was no match for the enemy as is, so he moved back as far as he could in an instant, allowing Jehanne to dodge at her own pace.

When the monster pulled its fist back, Jehanne didn’t miss the chance and gained some distance herself.

As she landed some distance away, the spear in her hands... dissipated into particles of light.

With just one hit, and her trusty weapon was destroyed!
