Chapter 52: Chapter 52 Harvesting Vegetables
The next morning, awakened by the alarm on his phone, Chen Xin got out of bed.Brushing his teeth, washing his face, and after a long time, shaving his beard with a razor, Chen Xin looked at his clean reflection in the mirror. He touched his freshly shaven chin, his expression somewhat inexplicable.
He didn’t even know why he was tidying himself up like this. Logically speaking, in this apocalyptic world, he didn’t need to go out or meet anyone, so even if he didn’t shave, it wouldn’t matter.
But last night, he still set his alarm half an hour earlier, making it so he’d wake up earlier and tidy himself up, just like when he used to go on dates with Qin Lan.
Thinking of this, Chen Xin couldn’t help but press his face with his hand.
It had become second nature. Every time he met Qin Lan, Chen Xin would make sure he was neat and tidy.
After all, Qin Lan was a great beauty, and if Chen Xin went to see her looking scruffy, he’d feel it was inappropriate.
With these old memories in mind, after tidying himself up, Chen Xin finished his breakfast as usual.
Once he confirmed over the radio that Mo Qingyan and her team had set out, Chen Xin headed towards the greenhouse, intending to harvest the vegetables before they arrived.
The crops in the greenhouse had all matured. Under Chen Xin’s meticulous care, both the cabbages and lettuce were growing well.
In fact, even the carrots planted two months ago could technically be harvested, but they were still only thumb-thick. While edible, harvesting them now would lead to a significant loss in yield, so Chen Xin decided to wait until next month.
Harvesting cabbages and lettuce didn’t require pulling the whole plant out of the ground. Doing so was not only likely to damage the crops but also inefficient, and could turn the neatly arranged plots into a mess.
The correct way to harvest them was to use a sickle to cut the cabbages and lettuce at the base, which maximized the harvest of mature crops while saving time and effort.
However, Chen Xin didn’t have a sickle. He used a long dagger from the weapons cabinet instead. It was a multifunctional knife he used during outdoor survival. Although it wasn’t particularly suitable, it was usable in the absence of proper tools.
Luckily, having gone through a harvest last month, Chen Xin had gained some experience, and given that the field wasn’t large, he quickly harvested all the cabbages.
Just as Chen Xin was piling the cabbages together for easy packing later, he heard the radio in the living room start to sound.
Worried that he wouldn’t hear Mo Qingyan’s calls while harvesting in the greenhouse, Chen Xin had turned the radio volume up to the max to ensure he could hear it even inside the planting greenhouse.
After briefly wiping his hands, Chen Xin returned to the living room and sat in front of the radio.
"Ingredients, ingredients! This is Dragon Lady, please respond! Please respond!" Mo Qingyan was calling over the radio. Her voice was already loud to begin with, and Chen Xin had turned up the volume, making her voice particularly earsplitting.
Chen Xin quickly turned down the radio’s volume, rubbed his ears, and responded, "I hear you. Why are you shouting so loudly?"
"I’m at your doorstep, hurry up and let me in!" Mo Qingyan, upon hearing Chen Xin’s response, lowered her voice slightly but still urged him.
"I know, I know, I’m opening it now." With that, Chen Xin went towards the shelter’s main door and opened the two gates of his shelter.
Outside the gate, a truck was parked, loaded with the supplies Chen Xin needed. Mo Qingyan, seeing Chen Xin step out, had already rolled down the window, waving at him.
Chen Xin smiled back at Mo Qingyan, but his gaze involuntarily fell on the figure driving the truck. It was the first time he’d seen Qin Lan since they broke up.
But neither Chen Xin nor Qin Lan in the truck showed much reaction.
"Ingredients, can we drive the truck inside?" Mo Qingyan asked Chen Xin as she got out of the vehicle, examining the shelter door behind him.
Chen Xin glanced back at his door, then at the truck they came in and shook his head, "I’m afraid it won’t fit. Last time you came with a pickup, which was smaller, but this truck’s head is too high. It might get stuck inside."
"Alright, I anticipated this beforehand." Mo Qingyan wasn’t surprised and nodded as she moved towards the truck bed, "Come help unload!"
Chen Xin walked over as Mo Qingyan climbed into the truck bed, pulling out a dolly. She smiled at Chen Xin, proudly saying, "Luckily, I brought this, or it would have been hard to move things."
Seeing Mo Qingyan take out a dolly, Chen Xin realized that the supplies he exchanged for were too numerous, and since the truck couldn’t get into his shelter, it would have taken him all day to move everything without it.
"You’re always so thorough, Dragon Lady." Chen Xin complimented Mo Qingyan and took the items she handed down from the truck, placing them on the dolly.
Qin Lan, having parked the truck, walked over to help with moving the items.
Upon seeing Chen Xin, Qin Lan didn’t forget to greet him, "Long time no see, A Xin."
"A Lan..." Chen Xin looked up to greet her, but in his moment of distraction, he almost dropped the bag of cement Mo Qingyan handed him. Fortunately, Qin Lan reached out to help, preventing the bag of cement from dropping onto Chen Yu’s foot.
"You still lack exercise like before." As she spoke to Chen Xin, Qin Lan effortlessly placed the bag of cement, which Chen Xin almost couldn’t hold, onto the dolly.
Seeing how easily she managed, Chen Xin awkwardly stepped aside and said, "I just didn’t hold it steadily, and I use my brains to work, not muscle. How can I compete with you?"
Realizing that he repeated something he’d said during a fight before they broke up, Chen Xin winced internally.
"A Xin, you really haven’t changed at all! Just like before." Qin Lan smiled at Chen Xin, taking another bag of cement from Mo Qingyan and placing it on the dolly, "It didn’t matter back then, but now with our current circumstances, you really should work on your fitness. Even if not for..."
She paused, realizing that although she was still urging Chen Xin to change his bad habits like before, they were no longer in a relationship, making her words inappropriate.
Chen Xin didn’t mind, he simply nodded at Qin Lan, agreeing, "I should exercise more. Otherwise, the farming alone will wear me out."
