Chapter 50: Personal Score

Anna blinked rapidly, her lashes fluttering in confusion as she tried to make sense of William’s cryptic words. He spoke to her in riddles, and her intoxicated mind was starting to protest, the frustration bubbling up inside her as she clenched her fists in an effort to suppress it.

Was this all just a game to him?

William’s gaze remained locked on her, mysterious and unreadable. He stayed silent, as though testing her, gauging what she would do if he continued to toy with her emotions. But that thrill he seemed to relish vanished almost instantly when a flicker of disappointment flashed in Anna’s eyes.

"Let’s just say I have a personal score to settle with your ex-husband," William said at last, the words almost slipping out on a breath. "Maybe one day, you’ll understand what it is."

"It doesn’t seem fair," Anna muttered, her body sinking into the softness of the bed as she slid down. She nestled her head against the pillow, her lids growing heavier with each passing second. The intoxication took over again, and no matter how hard she tried to fight it, her body seemed far too eager to succumb to sleep.

"What’s not fair?" William asked, his voice low as he shifted closer to her. He reached out, pulling her into his strong arms. She didn’t protest. In fact, she discarded the pillow and nestled her head against his chest, the warmth of his embrace more comforting than she had expected.

"I don’t think... this answers my question," Anna murmured, her voice barely audible as the last threads of consciousness began to slip away from her.

William let out a soft scoff, his large hand gently sweeping through her soft blonde hair. "Well, I could give you the long version of that answer, but I don’t think you’re in any state to remember it."

"Mhm," Anna hummed, her body going limp as she drifted deeper into the world of dreams, the rhythm of William’s heartbeat lulling her into a peaceful slumber.

"Anna?" William asked, his voice calm and patient, as he waited for her to respond. He secretly hoped she wouldn’t, and to his relief, she remained silent.

With a soft, almost imperceptible sigh, he drew her body a little closer to his. The steady rise and fall of her quiet breathing felt like a soothing balm to his soul, grounding him in the moment.

"Your ex-husband’s birthday party wasn’t the first or only time we met," William began, his voice low and measured, as though he were telling Anna a bedtime story. "I’ve known you for much longer than you think, Anna Adler."

Eleven Years Ago

"Do you think he’ll like it?" Anna hugged a large basket filled with freshly baked pastries to her chest, casting a timid glance at her friend Emma. "Robert said he was too busy preparing for the presentation... What if he gets mad?"

Emma scrunched up her face in mock irritation, then playfully slapped her friend on the shoulder. "Quit whining! If he gets mad that his girlfriend went out of her way, skipped classes, and spent a sleepless night baking pastries for his entire team, then he’s a total jerkface!"

"Don’t be so harsh," Anna replied, trying to keep her tone understanding. "This presentation is really important to him. Do you know how many investors will be there? It’s a huge opportunity for his team."

"Yeah, yeah," Emma muttered, unimpressed. "Where’s that room, anyway? I swear, we’ve been walking in circles."

"Oh, there it is!" Anna’s eyes brightened with excitement as she pointed to an open door at the end of the hallway.

Emma’s eyebrows shot up, almost immediately. "What’s going on in there? It sounds like people are fighting! Let’s get closer!"

A mischievous grin curled on Emma’s lips as she grabbed Anna by the wrist and pulled her toward the room. Emma marched forward with such speed that Anna nearly stumbled, struggling to keep up. "Wait! Emma, what the hell? Stop!"

"Shh!" Emma hissed at her, glancing over her shoulder just as they neared the open door. "There’s an actual fight going on inside."

"This is not just your project, Stark!" Robert’s voice thundered as he slammed his fist down on the desk. "Do you have any idea how hard everyone worked to put this together? It’ll take us the entire day to rewrite everything from scratch! We don’t have time for this!"

"Is this some kind of joke to you?" the man Robert was yelling at shot back coldly. "We’re writing a security program here, for God’s sake! No investor is going to give us the time of day if we present sloppy code."

"Sloppy?!" Another man chimed in, his face turning an angry shade of red. "We’ve run this code through every test imaginable—it works. Now just give us your part for the final integration, and we’re done."

"No," the first man scowled. "I won’t share my code unless we make the adjustments."

"Listen, Stark," Robert sighed, motioning for the rest of the guys to back off. "I get that you’re on edge because your mother’s in the hospital fighting for her life, but you need to calm down a little. When you agreed to work on this project, you agreed to be part of a team. So leave your emotions at the door, alright?"

"Go fuck yourself, Hyde," the man shot back, hurling his laptop onto the floor before storming out of the room. As he passed Anna, he shot her a fleeting, disdainful glare.

"Hey, get your ass back here!" Robert yelled, rushing after him. But he came to a sudden halt as soon as he saw Anna standing by the door. His brows furrowed, a deep scowl crossing his face. "What are you doing here?"

"Well, I––you said you’d be working all day, so I thought––"

"Yeah, well, if you heard what I said, why are you still here, bothering me?" Robert interrupted, gripping the door so tightly that his knuckles turned white. "Go home. I’m busy."

"Hey, can’t you be a little nicer to her?" Emma’s voice was icy and low, her tone dripping with disdain. "She was trying to do something nice for you. Do you really have to be such a jerk right now?"

Robert’s eyes narrowed dangerously, his jaw clenching as he hissed, "Get the hell out of here."

With that, he slammed the door in their faces, leaving both Emma and Anna frozen in stunned silence.

"What a piece of shit... I can’t believe this!" Emma muttered, her fury evident. Meanwhile, Anna simply clutched the basket tighter against her chest, swallowing the tears that threatened to spill over.
