Chapter 46: Four in the Afternoon

Anna struggled to peel her heavy eyelids open, her vision blurry as she tried to focus, waiting for the sleepiness to subside. She turned to the side, letting out a groan of discomfort. Every inch of her body ached, as though she had spent the entire night enduring an intense workout routine.

I can’t believe this...

It happened again. They slept together again last night, and this time, William had shown no mercy.

A rush of heat flooded Anna’s face as she absentmindedly brushed her sore lips with her right hand, a strange smile curving on her flushed face.

Truthfully, she hadn’t wanted last night to end either. The way William had held her close—so possessive, so passionate—his body pressing against hers like he was jealous even of the bedsheets that had no choice but to brush against her skin whenever she moved.

The way he kissed her—not just on the lips, but everywhere. It was as though he wanted to mark every inch of her body, his lips claiming her skin, leaving no spot untouched by his devotion, his presence.

The way he moved... relentless and greedy, he hadn’t stopped for hours, each thrust of his hips and every skillful movement of his fingers driving Anna to the brink of madness. He played her like an instrument, and she responded as if he were the only one who knew how to coax her to the perfect note.

I must have really gone crazy, Anna thought, her face turning even redder as she buried it into the soft pillow beneath her.

She was still enveloped in William’s intoxicating scent, which seemed to have seeped into the sheets and pillowcases. Even her own skin carried traces of him, and Anna couldn’t help but wish that his scent would remain with her forever—clinging to her until the day she died.

Was it foolish to think like that?

"This is just a contract relationship," she whispered softly, turning onto her back and pulling the pillow tightly against her chest. "He’s using me, and I’m using him. But... if I’m being honest, I don’t feel used at all. Even when he wants to sleep with me... it still feels like I’m the one who’s getting the most out of it."

She closed her eyes, her thoughts drifting back to the hours they had spent tangled together. When had she last felt such raw, intense passion? Had Robert ever made her feel that way?

With Robert, it had always been about practicality. He needed a child, so they’d do it when her body was most fertile. There had never been kisses that made her feel as though her lips belonged to him and him alone.

He never touched her in a way that made her acutely aware of his presence, of the way he felt against her skin, as though he was claiming her, marking her in a way only he could.

And he never looked at her with that possessive fire in his eyes—the kind of look that warned her she should focus only on him, think only of him, and forget anyone else existed.

Once again, William’s dark, smoldering gaze flashed through Anna’s mind as if to remind her—don’t think about anyone else but me. A shiver crawled down her spine, and her body broke out in goosebumps.

I need to get up, she thought, shaking her head as though she could banish William’s intense stare from her thoughts. What time is it, anyway?

But before Anna could even reach for her phone to check the time, a loud, insistent knock on the door startled her, nearly sending her to her feet.

"Chloe! Are you alright, darling? Are you feeling unwell?"

"Mrs. Garrel?" Anna’s eyes widened as she hastily grabbed her silk robe to cover her exposed body.

"Chloe?" Anaїs’s voice rang out with growing concern. "I’m coming in!"

Before Anna could react, the door swung open with a soft creak, and Anais strode in, coming to an abrupt halt as her gaze swept over the disarray in the room.

Anna’s eyes followed the path of Anaїs’s sharp look, and her heart sank as she realized just what Mrs. Garrel had walked into. Her green dress lay crumpled on the floor, her heels abandoned haphazardly by the bed, and—embarrassingly—her underwear was still draped over the headrest.

A wave of mortification rushed over Anna, and she swallowed hard, feeling her face flush with heat. She opened her mouth to explain, but the words stuck in her throat as she saw Anaїs’s red face.

"Well," Anaїs began, tugging at the hem of her fitted jacket as if unsure what to do with her hands, "it’s clear you’re not ill, which, I suppose, is a good thing."

"Ill?" Anna blinked in confusion. "Why would I be ill?"

"My dear, healthy people don’t stay in bed until four in the afternoon!" Anaїs replied with a teasing tone, her eyes twinkling slightly.

"Four?!" Anna gasped, her hand flying to her mouth in embarrassment. "Oh God, I’ve slept through the entire day!"

Anaїs arched an eyebrow, a knowing smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "William must have kept you busy late into the night, I suppose?" she remarked, her gaze shifting to Anna’s neck, where telltale marks from William were visible.

Anna’s face went scarlet as she quickly covered the hickeys with her left hand, instinctively lowering her gaze to avoid Anaїs’s knowing eyes. She could feel the heat of a blush creeping up her neck, and she knew she’d turn into a fireball if their gazes met again.

"Oh, my dear, I’ve embarrassed you," Anaїs said, clasping her hands together as a light, teasing note entered her voice. "I’m sorry! Should I have that troublemaker thrown out of the mansion? I wouldn’t want you to lose any more sleep over that boy."

"N-no, it’s alright," Anna stammered, grateful that Anais didn’t seem to judge her harshly. "I’m sorry I worried you," she added quickly, regaining a bit of composure. "Are you here to invite me to afternoon tea? I can be ready in thirty minutes."

"Not exactly," Mrs. Garrel replied with a knowing smile. "There’s someone else here to see you today. I’m afraid you’ll need to cut your preparations down to no more than fifteen minutes."

"Oh?"
