Chapter 57: The Things You Do For The Greater Good

Euri walked out of the Principal’s office feeling somewhat conflicted.

On one hand, he didn’t want to be involved in this territorial war between giant clans. On the other hand, a major goal in his life—to have a promising corporate career—seemed to be right around the corner of that choice.

That’s right. Nadir Bloodfly had not turned his offer down. He had promised Euri that he’d find a position for him in Red Sea Labs that didn’t come with the same risks and liabilities as the rest of the recruits. Nadir deemed it a gift for the benefactor who had saved the project.

Success from shooting in the dark was hard to adjust to. Euri could only thank the young man in a stiff manner and contemplate whether he should really accept the job if it was offered.

Before he took his leave from the meeting, Principal Serique had given him some warnings, mostly because his action the previous day had earned the ire of many big fish in the depths of Peacock District.

Both Serique and Nadir had also given him their private contact details, to be used if things really went south.

The only reassuring thing Serique said was, "Helios Clan will face a lot of backlash if they make a move against you now. That video of you yesterday was seen by 4 million people across multiple platforms.

"They can’t afford to be focused on petty revenge at the moment. So don’t be overly paranoid. Just keep an eye out for suspicious stuff around you."

Euri didn’t have the mood to return to the class. He went to the canteen instead. When he was halfway through a sandwich, a group of students strode into the canteen, heading right towards him. A short, but muscular baldy was in the lead.

To test his conjecture about the shift in their attitude towards him, Euri pointedly ignored their fast-approaching presence, keeping his full focus on eating the sandwich.

Bennet came to a stop right at the opposite end of the table, and his cronies surrounded Euri’s chair with practiced ease, none close enough to be hit, none too far away to be ruled out as a threat.

A strange silence stretched between them as Euri continued to gnaw on the sandwich. The sound of their breaths could almost be heard alongside the chewing noise inside Euri’s mouth. After finishing it whole, he took an extra long swig of drink and met Bennet’s eyes.

"You seem a little different today, big brother," he said, referring to the extraordinary display of patience. Bennet’s mouth twitched uncontrollably, and a shadow of raging frustration flashed across his face.

To his credit, he hid it very quickly and replied in an enthusiastic tone.

"Congratulations on becoming the first superhuman of the senior batch, brother Euri. I always felt that you had something special in you. Looks like my instincts weren’t wrong!"

The difference in his behaviour today, when compared to their previous encounters, showed a difference as stark as between day and night.

Restraining his urge to laugh out loud, Euri said, "Seems like it. You’ll surely make your father a proud man, big brother. That kind of instinct must be useful in... your line of work."

Euri’s ears didn’t miss the collective intake of air around him. Like trained bulls seeing red, the delinquents were ready to fight to restore their bossman’s ego. But Bennet gave no such signal.

Instead he sat down on the chair across from Euri and went straight to business, which Euri found impressive. He hadn’t expected this guy to have that level of self-control.

"Brother Euri, I have the address and identities of all three idiots that messed with you that day. In this envelope, you’ll find everything you need for a long, uninterrupted chat with the trio.

"Rest assured, as long as you don’t leave your trace behind, nobody will be able to retaliate against you."

Euri took the fat envelope from Bennet and bade them all goodbye, this time without the antagonizing undertone. Bennet’s cloudy expression visibly cleared up.

Before returning to the class, he went through the contents of the envelope, since it would be unwise to carry around the evidence of his future misdeeds.

Bennet had outdone himself, he realized, as clear photos of all three men, a map of the area they lived in, and details of their cultist links poured out from it.

"Tail zone, Red Tarp Slum, all three targets in close proximity... Quite convenient, all things considered! Looks like I’ll be done with this before Dad and Mom come home."

Making up his mind to not delay doing the world a big favor, Euri attended the rest of his classes in a cheerful mood. During the lunch break, a teacher came in to announce that Red Sea Labs was going to send a nomination list for the first wave of recruits within forty-eight hours.

The news sent the rest of the students on cloud nine as well. Most of them had been under the impression that a disaster could strike the project anytime. Knowing that they had gotten full clearance for now reduced the paranoia by a great degree.

During the train ride back to his home, Euri logged into the game and got a surprise, one worth celebrating. Both Scavenger Rat and Scavenger Rabbit had returned with new deposits of ambrosia ingredients!

"Did the efficiency go up because of the rabbit’s special attribute? Or did its presence simply deter the rat from devouring the ingredients all by itself?"

It’d remain an unsolved mystery. Euri was satisfied with the current developments enough not to care much about it. Either way, the rabbit was boosting productivity.

Its special attribute—Hungry Gaze, was of the same caliber as the rat’s sense of smell, with the added benefit of being more focused on what mattered to Euri.

The rabbit’s ability to track down edible foodstuff increased in response to its hunger level. The hungrier it got, the easier it would be for it to find new ambrosia ingredients across the sacred ground.

"As long as I starve you, my little fluffball, nobody can stop me from ascending!"

Inside the sacred ground, a harmless-looking rabbit suddenly shivered, as if gripped by a grave premonition...
