Chapter 51: On the Brink Of A Collapse

The body fluid and DNA sample tests were out within an hour. Just as they had suspected, everyone was given a passing evaluation. Not only that, this evaluation also came with some data so obviously false that no one could defend it anymore.

The class monitor, Shenna, held up his final evaluation chart in front of everyone with a morose face and shouted, "This chart shows that I have a physique rating of 1.2 points, which is just a fraction above the preferred requirement.

"But we all know that I couldn’t run a 200-meter sprint without sitting down to breathe a couple of times on the track.

"My physique has never been good. Reaching a full 1 point without supplements is impossible for me. How could my rating here be so high?"

His question was addressed to the employees gathered inside the classroom. They had no answers for him. So he turned to Miss Rei, who simply flashed him a wooden smile and pretended not to hear him.

Euri looked at Jaakie’s chart, where a rating of 1.3 points had been given for his Physique. By instinct, he opened his mouth to fortify his argument against joining the project, only to remember their last conversation and fall silent, feeling helpless.

"Euri, you’ve been guessing pretty accurately so far. What do you think is going to happen now? The tests are over. We’ve all qualified. And then?"

Grimacing, Euri replied, "There are two possibilities, from a broad perspective. One, everything proceeds without a hitch and our school gets some fame for accidentally producing so many students with high potential.

"But of course, with time passing, the truth will gradually come to light. The only students who’ll remain safe from the backlash are those who manage to make something of themselves through the project."

"And the second possibility?"

"The side that wants to make Nadir stumble goes berserk and launches an open move to prove that it’s a sham, the whole test. Right now is the best time for that, with all the reporters and cameras outside. It’d be a simple job. Just grab some kids from this group and show the world that they aren’t as capable as the data chart shows.

"The whole city will then be under the assumption that Nadir Bloodfly is a scammer. It’ll be a severe blow not only to him, but also on all expansion plans of the Bloodfly Clan in Peacock District."

"Won’t the colluding insiders in the Red Sea Labs be harmed too if they do that? Bloodfly Clan owns the company, don’t they?" Jaakie asked.

"Do you think the big clans controlling this city would care about the opinions of a few corrupt white collar workers? Heh~"

"Euri, my man, sometimes it’s so suspicious how good you are in thinking up fucked up schemes on scales so massive. It always feels like you’re bullshitting, but it also seems like something those big factions would do if necessary."

"I do hope the former turns out to be true in this case, at least," Euri said wearily. "It’d at least guarantee an opportunity for you. Damn, it’s not every day I pray that I’m wrong."

At this moment, Miss Rei received a call on her comcell. As soon as she heard the message from the other side, her face turned pale.

"Dear students... A troublesome situation has arisen outside," she announced loudly to get everyone’s attention.

"Did they figure out that these tests are a scam?" Shenna retorted grimly. Miss Rei gave him a complex look and cleared her throat awkwardly.

"Ahem, some very influential journalists have arrived on the campus. They’ve been adamant about interviewing you all. And Principal Serique cannot stop them from entering this building, unlike the first wave of field reporters. So, uh—"

"Why can’t he stop them?" Jaakie shouted angrily.

"He’s the final decision-maker in all matters of the campus. There are literal laws empowering him to deal with outsiders unless it’s a government-enforced inquiry."

Euri elbowed Jaakie in the ribs lightly.

"Stupid! Don’t you know who endorses the principal? It’s the Helios Clan. They’re the first major clan to be directly targeted by the Bloodflies. If anyone has to go all the way to stop the Bloodfly Clan, it’s them!"

Jaakie’s eyes went wide. "Doesn’t the principal know that we’ll get screwed out of our opportunity too? If he allows the reporters to enter this building and test us, just because the Helios Clan ordered him to-"

"Jaakie, we’re a bunch of nobodies, second-class citizens at best. A superhuman wouldn’t ruin his future to protect our house of cards."

Right then, a collective gasp sounded from up ahead, forcing them to end their debate. Turning to look in the direction everyone in the room was staring out, Euri saw a lady in a fashionable suit leaning against the door and holding up a small, but expensive-looking camera pointed towards them.

The doors and windows of the classroom had been locked for a while now in order to ensure that no outsiders could snoop in on the third test’s results. How did she get in?

"A superhuman! Definitely a Rank-1 superhuman! She literally walked through the locked door like it’s empty air," someone nearby hissed.

"I saw it too! They call this ability Ghostwalk in the forums! It’s so rare that the number of superhumans known to have awakened it can be counted on fingers!" A girl said, half excited, half fearful.

"How does it work? How come her clothes didn’t get left outside the door? Does she have the ability to influence external objects alongside her body?"

"Dude, are you really worrying about that right now?" Jaakie lost his cool and slapped the neck of the guy who was speculating on some suspect scenes.

"I know who that is," Eddie spoke from a corner.

"We aren’t paying, Eddie," the girl snapped.

"Okay, you guys are really looking down on me if you think I’d stoop low enough to sell her identity. She’s my idol!

"Anyone who follows independent news streamers knows her! She’s Chaera Doll, one of the best in that field! Mainstream media channels can only dream about employing a reporter like her; a true Rank-1 elite who can investigate anything and anyone on this planet if she wants!

And suffices to say, if she’s livestreaming right now, millions are watching us through that camera. Her next move should be enough to axe this project for good."
