I Became The Administrator of A Sacred Ground
Chapter 40: Riding Eagles Through The City

Chapter 40: Riding Eagles Through The City

There was a reason why the plan Euri had explained to Vernon differed from the one he offered his two colleagues. Simply said, this was a measure of leverage to keep both parties in check, lest they should entertain any idea of deviating from the main course.

From Vernon’s perspective, he was paying 30,000 credits off his debt and 10,000 extra to compensate the two disgruntled thugs. Another 6000 credits would soon have to be paid to Euri’s account if this plan worked out.

But to Aemon and Jameson, Vernon was paying 40,000 credits off the debt, an amount close enough to the basic installment to be deemed reasonable.

As for their compensation, they’d take the cut a week later when Vernon became ready to pay that.

In this intricately chaotic arrangement, the creditor, the debtor, and the collector, all three parties would be adequately satisfied. No one would feel like they were being taken advantage of.

No one would be tempted to break out of the plan either, because in their eyes, the benefits of the plan wouldn’t come to fruition until the coming weekend. Vernon would get his lucky watch back, and the trio would get their compensation money.

To Aemon and Jameson, 5000 credits was enough of an amount to forget a beating. So they agreed to the offer, not wanting to enrage Vernon into making a bigger mess by involving the police.

It wasn’t that they were afraid of the police, truth be told. The people from the tail-zone regions of the district simply avoided the law enforcers by instinct due to their upbringing and subculture.

"By the way, Euri, what do you get out of this? Jameson and I get 5000 credits each. Surely, you didn’t reach this deal without retaining any benefits for yourself?" Aemon said in a suspicious tone.

"...I am, of course, going to take a small cut from each of you like I was supposed to from our original commission money. Why would this be a question?" Euri said, trying to keep his face straight and shoulders stable.

The urge to not break out in fits of laughter was very strong indeed, and when he saw Aemon’s skeptical look turning increasingly concrete, he couldn’t hold it in anymore.

"Hahaha, I’m just messing with you guys. The 5,000 credits you get are entirely yours. I’ll get the same once things get settled. You can ask Vernon if you have any doubts."

Aemon waved a hand dismissively.

"I believe you, kid. And even if you’re lying, I don’t care. You’ve already outdone yourself in this fiasco. I can’t imagine things concluding so peacefully if you’d just decided to save your own hide and run away!"

Euri’s laughter turned into a series of awkward coughs, but thankfully, neither of his two colleagues gave it much thought.

The following parts of the plan were executed rather smoothly.

Vernon was relieved to see that neither Aemon nor Jameson seemed to be holding a grudge, despite how cranky they became upon meeting him face to face outside the bedroom.

Their promise to placate Boss Chen over the gap in payment delighted him further. After transferring the money to Aemon digitally, he even escorted them to the metro circuit with his car.

"I gotta head to school, guys," Euri told them upon discovering a shuttle scheduled for the region his school was in.

"There’s an important program today; can’t miss it. Goodbye for now!"

"Oi, wait up," Aemon shouted, jogging to catch up with him. As Euri looked at him curiously, Aemon pulled out a wad of cash from his pocket and stuffed it in Euri’s backpack.

"Your share in the commission. Better hide it from your parents if you don’t want to make tall excuses. Save it for a rainy day."

"...Thank you, Aemon." Euri knew that there was more than the promised 200 credits in there. Aemon hadn’t yet been paid for the job, and Boss Chen might even cut off their commission if the 40,000 credits didn’t satiate his appetite.

Considering that possibility, giving away Euri’s share ahead of time was quite a generous act.

Sitting by himself in the shuttle, Euri checked his comcell.

Jaakie had sent him a message half an hour ago, informing him that the recruitment test Red Sea Lab was about to conduct on their batch would take place this evening, delayed due to the metro circuit problems.

Euri hadn’t had time to chat until now. So he quickly typed back: [ What do you mean, ’Recruitment Test’? Wasn’t it supposed to be a scholarship program? ]

Jaakie didn’t respond, perhaps busy preparing for it, based on whatever discovery he had made about it on campus.

Not that Euri cared much. He had little interest in becoming a test subject either way.

In the game, not much was going on either. The Blizzard Porcupine was inside the Breakthrough Pod, unable to break through, unable to cultivate.

The six Infinity Locusts who had made breakthroughs last night were cultivating alongside their smaller, lesser peers.

Scout Dog, Brawler Rat, Dread Spider, and Saw Serpent were all steadily approaching their third breakthrough. Scout Dog would undoubtedly be the first to hit that landmark; Euri was sure of it.

Having nothing else to do, Euri faced the window by his seat and looked at the vast cityscape outside. Skyscrapers, residential blocks, peculiarly shaped megastructures, flyovers, and artificial water channels flickered past the frame of his vision ceaselessly.

From the Wing Zone, the shuttle was gradually approaching the heart of Peacock District, where citizens from the Neck Zone, Waist Zone, and Tail Zone come to mingle in one massive commercial region.

The headquarters of every public and private organization, all the important government offices and departments were situated here. Banks, hotel chains, company boards, corporations, trade centers, hospitals, entertainment sectors, education and research academies—all the important elements of Peacock District’s infrastructure bloomed from this area.

Of course, Euri’s school, the worst-ranked public school in the district, was not significant enough to have a spot here. So he didn’t have to disembark when the shuttle ran across the stations of the Heart Zone.

He watched with envy as others did, though.

Many were office workers. Some were students of elite schools and universities. Some were simply there for business and recreational purposes.

Euri’s envy was directed at the former group. He imagined himself in their shoes, walking into fragrant auditoriums and occupying a corner office hundreds of meters above the streets, where he’d see his reflection on a glassy wall towering over the vast cityscape like a titanic, incorporeal giant...

Euri’s reverie was suddenly broken by an unusual sight outside. Not too far above in the sky, a group of eagles had appeared suddenly, flying in the same direction as his shuttle.

Euri doubted any species of ordinary eagles traveled in groups. He had never seen so. So he scrutinized the group closely as they crossed the shuttle at a far superior speed.

Sure enough, there were people on the backs of these eagles. Euri caught a glimpse of several silhouettes who were gesturing at each other while making their eagles perform quick maneuvers.

Superhumans... Euri’s envy was not even as pronounced as it had been earlier. He knew he could catch up with them soon. This feeling of confidence was a strange element. The sense of superiority it gave him was almost alarming.

The shuttle was already past the Heart zone. So Euri couldn’t help but be curious to see where this group of Superhumans was headed. Had they discovered any newly formed dimensional gateways near the Tail-zone regions?

Euri’s question was answered when the shuttle began to slow down, and on the microphone, a mechanical voice announced that they had arrived at station W-7, where Euri was supposed to get off.

Through the window, he saw the group of eagles swoop down towards the area of Public School No. W-15. It seemed that he was going to meet those superhumans face to face today.
