Chapter 56: GOLD and Only GOLD

Lyanna, despite the fear gripping her heart, quickly forced herself to regain composure. She took a slow breath, then stepped forward, addressing the ridge giants with as much grace as she could muster.

"Giants, there is no battle here. This was simply a misunderstanding, and we’ve already settled it Through talking and punishing the one who was at fault and he won’t be able to do that any more... I assure you."

Because he was dead... as simple as that.

The leading giant observed the situation, noting how the elves had put away their weapons. He finally gave a slow nod.

"Hmph. That is good. But remember this, human. You might rule the richest lands of the Continent, but do not bring your arrogance into this forest. This is the domain of Elves. Arrogance here will only bring you destruction."

Lyanna swallowed, forcing a weak smile. The giants saw humans as greedy, arrogant creatures, and she couldn’t even argue with them. They weren’t wrong.

Lifting her chin slightly, she said, "We have full respect for the Elves and Elf King. He is... perhaps the most noble and perfect king I’ve ever seen."

The giants narrowed their eyes at her for a moment before their massive forms began retreating toward the elves’ side of the forest. Only then did the Ironcrest merchant guild members finally relax, though the tension still clung to them.

Lyanna turned to Gorren, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Teacher... you didn’t tell me the Giant Golems were allied with Renjiro."

Gorren, pale-faced, let out a shaky breath. "Lady Lyanna... I just found out too."

Lyanna didn’t press for more details. Instead, she murmured to herself, "A gold mine... maybe we can share it with King Renjiro... considering his obsession with gold... then... nah! It’s too soon."

Gorren, standing beside her, snapped his head toward her, eyes wide in disbelief.

Meanwhile, the Elf King, Renjiro, had returned triumphant after leading the charge against the Demon Wolf Clan.

His victory had brought him an immense reward, not just thousands of magic cores, but something far more significant. He had also returned with the Unicorns... their mounts.

When the army and the unicorns stepped into the centre of the elven territory, the entire territory erupted in celebration. Elves gathered in the streets, their voices lifted in cheers, their hands reaching out to stroke the names of the unicorns with reverent joy.

For them, unicorns were not just creatures; they were a symbol of their lost... age. Since the fall of their previous territory, no elf had laid eyes on a unicorn. Now, their return was nothing short of a miracle.

The unicorns, too, felt an undeniable connection. As they gazed across the vast elven lands and the tens of thousands of elves who welcomed them, they felt something long forgotten, a sense of home.

It was almost as if they had returned to their destined home, the place they had belonging to.

One unicorn, larger than the rest, spread its shimmering wings and soared high above the treetops, letting out a triumphant cry.

After circling the sky, it descended gracefully and approached Renjiro. The creature pressed its forehead against him, as if reaffirming their relationship. Ever since they had left the demon wolf valley together, Renjiro had become its master, its companion, its kindred spirit.

At that moment, a messenger arrived, bowing deeply before Renjiro. "Your Majesty, the Ironcrest Merchant Guild Caravan has arrived."

Renjiro’s eyes sharpened. "Oh! Bring them in."

"Yes, Your Majesty!" A short while later, the Ironcrest Merchant Guild Caravan entered the elves’ territory yet once again.

The knights and mages traveling with them had seen many wonders, but nothing could have prepared them for this.

They found themselves surrounded by tens of thousands of elves, nearly all of them warriors. The sheer presence of so many armed elves made their steps cautious, their breaths measured.

One knight in particular stiffened at the memory of an unfortunate comrade who had dared to offend an archer. His mistake had cost him his life, and none of them wanted to ever repeat it, at least not here in their home.

Lyanna’s gaze swept over the scene in awe. She whispered to Gorren, "If I weren’t seeing this with my own eyes, I wouldn’t believe it. A month ago, there were barely under a thousand elves here in togal. Now, there are tens of thousands. It’s like they appeared out of thin air."

Gorren exhaled slowly. "It is unbelievable... I know... My reaction was the same yesterday."

But for Gorren, the most striking change wasn’t the size of the elf population, it was Renjiro himself.

A month ago, the Elf King had been warm, noble, and generous... or more like a naive Elf. Now, he was undeniably powerful, but there was something else, something almost dragon-like in his obsession with gold.

Gorren had to wonder... was the Elf King secretly a dragon disguised in elf’s clothing or was he working for a dragon now? Disguised one assumption was on his transformation magic. Of course, there was no proof of such a wild idea but just a thought and hypothesis.

....

Inside the hall of the Elf King’s palace, Renjiro sat upon an ornate throne, adorned with the elegant crown of his people. His presence was regal, commanding, but his eyes held a sharp gleam, one that made even seasoned merchants tread carefully.

Like Gorren had thought not the naive or generous Elf King he was a month ago but like a completely different Elf now with a new obsession like that of a dragon.

Lyanna, standing before him with her sister and Gorren, felt her heartbeat quicken. Seeing him like this, with the weight of his crown and the power he now wielded, was an entirely different experience. But she forced herself to smile, bowing gracefully.

"Your Majesty, it’s an honor to see you again."

Renjiro leaned forward slightly, his lips curving into a subtle smile. "Miss Lyanna, I hope the two million gold coins you owe compensation to my people won’t put a strain on our future or now negotiations or partnership."

Gorren nearly choked. There it was. The very first thing out of the Elf King’s mouth... not how was your journey, or what had happened at the forest border where one of their knights had been killed by their archer but GOLD.

Lyanna’s smile faltered for a split second before she recovered, her voice light and charming. "Your Majesty, I believe these two million gold coins will only strengthen our bond more! The Ironcrest Merchant Guild and the elves will build a bridge of trust—just like the Dwarf and the Elf once did. A bond that cannot be broken."

Renjiro drummed his fingers against the armrest of his throne. "The dwarves? They were our allies once," he mused. "But, they turned against us."

Lyanna tensed. "Turned against you...?"
